    Gott'a love the H-14 water ballet. Anyone who sails one has done the flopping around and climbing for dear life, trying to get the damn boat to stabilize on one side or the other. I actually use the 14 to take some of my cocky new sail staff down a notch every year. I had a champion Laser sailor that thought he was hot shit a couple of years ago. I put him on the 14 to cool him off a bit. It was blowing g 15-18 Kts and gusty. He said, "Easy, no problem", He was swimming within a minute of me jumping off the boat into the skiff. That old 14 will improve your performance on all the other boats you sail. It forgives no mistakes and demands constant attention. That's what makes them so fun. Add a jib and it's a whole nother level !

      Is it significantly harder than sailing a 16?

    • @aspees
      @aspees Před 5 měsíci +2

      @@jwgmail Slower, but it's very fussy when it comes to where you plant your ass. Not alot of boats will capsize backwards.

      The jib is a mysterious subject with the 14. When i raced them there was no jib or trapeze. Hiking was pretty strenuous, but that is how we raced them. The turbo has a jib and trapeze. The question is why no jib even thought the rules were changed to allow the trapeze? When you see them tack and go DDW with no jib it looks kinda lame. I liked sailing the boat with no jib and i could back-tack well, but a jib helps you tack. Seems like the new ppl would have wanted the jib, just sayin

    The 14 is not for beginners and is my last choice for winter sailing. You're doing great, Joe! We're all cheering for you!!!

    @DialedN_07 Před 5 měsíci +5

    I used to have that problem on the F16 while sailing solo (no jib allowed). During the tack, you have to go all the way to the back of the boat to pass the tiller around the mainsheet. It would put the bows completely out of the water, and as soon as your next wave comes through and smacks the bottom of the hulls, your boat completely stops and then you're at the mercy of the wind. The tiniest of shift would put the bows even higher in the air while the boat is stationary and it was so hard to get moving again. I found that IMMEDIATELY after passing the tiller behind the mainsheet, moving foward as far as possible as quickly as possible really improved tacking performance while sailing solo. With a crew it was never a problem, because their extra weight forward was enough to keep the bows down.

    The best way to get rid of any nerves is to dunk the boat a couple of times.
    Just a couple of comments. You seem to spend too much time managing the sheet/traveller lead. I don't know how the rules regulate that setup but it doesn't seem like a very efficient system. Also the flopper-stopper seems like it should lead back to the middle of the tramp maybe coming up through the center lacing tied off at the rear lacing to the length required for when it's loose and then with a simple toggle tied in further forward that can be pulled up through the center lacing in one motion and secured in the way toggles are secured (under tension with a twist) on the tramp topside . It should be easy-set/easy-release without having to go forward. Otherwise if you get time to practice, practice tacking. Looks like a lot of fun. I love the rolling commentary. It's like Sports Radio where the commentator has to paint a picture, but with video added as a bonus. Very entertaining.

    Takes a bit long to get the righting line out. On my 16 I always had both ends tied off to the stanchions, then the slack taken up in the center and tied around the dolphin striker. So it was always ready to go.

    You are perfect for demonstrating how NOT to sail a H 14,yes I can do better,your (tacking ) is a shocking.Crack the sheet slightly,while staying on the side you were on.Steadily steer the boat through the wind leaving that last bit to push the helm over then smartly move over the tramp to the new side and sheet on.If you have to back the rudders,you need to spend hours and many tacks to get it right.Its NOT that hard.A lot of people might want to have a go,that’s fine.A friend of mine from way back was rubbish,cartwheeling down the river.Not a natural sailor but determined as hell.With his determination he became a very good all round sailor here in Australia,this was in the early days of Rod Waterhouse and Ian Bashford 😀😀😀😀 Have a Hobie Day.
