Being in the right place is not enough to write an excellent book. Millions of people witnessed the same historic event as John le Carré. But no one has written anything fictional so memorable about that troubled reality in which a shadow world of a few shapes history and hides under the sunny world in which everyone else lives. Carré was in the "right mental and emotional state" when he wrote the book, and that's what made the difference.

I was a schoolkid when Smileys people was on telly. I didn't understand it but the mysterious melancholy music, and the mystery intrigued me. I even had the bbc LP of the music. I've read a lot of this guy's novels and his reminiscences. The supposed inspiration for Smiley was John Binggham and I read a biography of him. Binghams wife hated Le Carre, and a lot of the spooks hated him. I now think he had a very jaundiced view of, well, the spooks. I actually think he might have been an enemy of the uk. But I did like his books, they are so well written, the characterization, is so good, I liked his books but they never have a happy ending, right or wrong, they criticize the uk's security services a lot, in my impression.
