    Something I like doing, not even pressing the strings down at all but turning the wah pedal on to really cut through with the high gain of the wah pedal being on.
    That really gets some nice sharp percussive sounds for me playing a strat

    My skank has improved much after this vid. most others don't show the basics of the left hand "touch" and like the demonstration of incorporating ringing notes. By far the best skank tutorial so far.. now I'm on the quest for that old school "scratch" tone.....

    I get smarter every time I watch one of your videos! I have a question: Do you have any suggestions/resources for playing reggae/ska rhythm guitar on an instrument with inverted strings? My bandmate plays left-handed but uses right-handed stringing. Thus a downstroke for him sounds like an upstroke. Should one just try to use the same techniques shown here? Or maybe there are alternate techniques for reverse stringing?
    Also, I've noticed that my tenor ukulele -- which goes down to a G below middle C and has a pickup -- is great for recording skank parts. Especially with amp modeling and effects. It's small and light and fun to play and has a distinct sound. I'm thinking of adding it to my already way-too-unwieldy live setup!

    • @DMKahn
      @DMKahn  Před 2 lety

      Hey Azalea, thanks for the comment! I don’t have any resources about upside down chords, but I’m sure it can be figured out. First thing you have to do is learn the 3 notes in each chord and try to find patterns. It’s the same idea as regular guitar.. just need to spend time figuring out the notes and try to find hand techniques

  • @Misanthrop1988

    Superb video. I tried to recreate your settings with the exactly same amp but it sounds distorted when i play with my Les Paul. Am i using the wrong guitar for that sound? by the way have you an idea how to create Aston Barrett's 70's bass sound ? Stay healthy.

    • @DMKahn
      @DMKahn  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey bro! A les Paul will have a more mid range and HOTTER sound (more output/volume). Try turning down the gain on the amp, or turning down the volume of the guitar. You might need less mids and more treble on the Les Paul too. Thanks for tuning in! For the Aston sound, id say some foam muting the strings a bit would be helpful, maybe flat wound strings. Scoop out some mids. Should get you in the ballpark anyways. Bless you brother stay safe as well

  • @trelasaux472
    @trelasaux472 Před 4 lety

    Hey Kahn. I play an american stratocaster and I always used the neck pickup. But the sound of your Tele in the middle position sounds awesome. What would you recommend for strat players? Gonna order some .60mm picks and play around with the presence on my amp which for no reason I always used to keep on 0. What exactly does that knob do anyways? Thanks for the knowledge!

    • @DMKahn
      @DMKahn  Před 4 lety

      On a strat I’d try the bridge pickup or the neck pickup. Definitely play with the amp settings. Just remember the strat has a little bit of a quacky tone. You kinda need to embrace it!! Or you could get a humbucker for the bridge pickup if you want a crunchier tone. The presence tone might be exactly what you’ve been missing, give it a shot. Before you spend any money, I’d definitely use what you have first. Cheers!

    If I only have pre sets on logic, what amp preset should I use for this sound?

    • @DMKahn
      @DMKahn  Před 3 lety

      I’d look for one that says “crunch” and tweak from there. You want only a pinch of distortion in the upper frequencies to help it “cut” through the mix. Best of luck!!

    Is there any kinda of bpm area for reggae, rocksteady, dancehall and ska? I'm creating songs but I'm strugglin finding their bpm, it feels like all of them end almost in the same bpm. If you could do a video on tips how to find a bpm for a song and what kinda of styles you can find in each bpm area! It would be awesome!

    • @DMKahn
      @DMKahn  Před 3 lety +2

      In my experience reggae is from 120-160bpm. Or 60-80 (halved). Rock steady is about the same, ska is generally faster. 135bpm is my favorite for rubadub. Hope that helps.

    • @dreadadread83
      @dreadadread83 Před 3 lety +1

      It really depends which chord you are playing, there is no rule but with 5 strings it kinda sounds more percussive in the mix than with only 3 strings. I try to avoid to play 6th string because it sometimes sounds too low but once again it really depends which type of skank you want ! Blessed love

But there’s plenty of good amps that come with the regular TH-U Slate. If you have the Rock pack, I’m pretty sure you can still purchase rig expansions like the one I used in this video. Cheers D👑K

    • @DMKahn
      @DMKahn  Před 4 lety

      So I just looked into the different versions. For how I play, funk/RNB would probably be better because I don’t like high gain stuff to much, but it’s up to you. Both the Rock and Funk/RNB versions allow rig extensions, which is where it’s at! The full version isn’t worth it in my opinion, unless guitar is like your main thing
