  • Concerns over the societal impacts of generative AI are prompting a flurry of regulatory and policy responses globally, with initiatives underway in the EU, China, Brazil, Japan, Singapore, the UK, and the US, as well as through multilateral organizations such as the UN, OECD, the African Union, and ASEAN. Proposals range widely, reflecting competing political philosophies.
As the landscape evolves rapidly, this timely symposium, co-hosted by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI) and the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, intends to help participants navigate the escalating complexity and make sense of the multifaceted, worldwide policy ecosystem directing society's adoption of AI systems.
With the leaders at global AI Safety Institutes and international organizations, as well as researchers and policy leaders on the ground in the EU, BRICS, and Africa, we unpack intentions, technical specifics, and core tensions underlying major competing visions for global AI governance. Participants stand to gain a critical perspective on the pressure points and the key building blocks guiding our collective trajectory.
