Twilight Zone Night of the Meek -- Merry Christmas! -- final and best scene

- The best [in my opinion] Christmas story on film or TV. It has the brilliant writing of Rod Serling and an Emmy-worthy performance by Art Carney as a down and out alcoholic department store Santa who is redeemed by a magical gift-giving bag.
- Komedie
There's something magical about when Rod Serling gives a message to the children of the 20th century and wishes us a Merry Christmas. Perhaps one of the greatest gifts he left for his fans!
Yeah Irs pretty awesome that twilight zone has a Christmas episode of a drunk becoming a Santa
I heard Rod wrote this because, more than anything, he wanted to see Art Carney playing Santa some day ... So he made it happen ...
It wasn't a message to children -- it was a message to cynical adults to never lose their sense of wonder... 😀

Art Carney was one the most underrated actors of all time.
No doubt about it!
Watch HARRY AND TONTO.
Got an Oscar. Doesn’t get more recognized than that....
@@randellstevens4545 Carneys legacy is just fine.
Ok
The three stages of life:
(1) You believe in Santa Claus
(2) You don't believe in Santa Claus
(3) You ARE Santa Claus
Goes to show that Santa Claus IS real
Don Harden superb comment. Merry early Christmas.
Susan B ho ho ho Merry Christmas
Don Harden I really do like your comment which it is true January 30,2020
That's a very good comment.
Starting our lives believing in Santa Claus as kids, going on to becoming Santa Claus for our own kids (by leaving the presents under the Christmas tree and in their stockings). That just goes to show that there is a Santa Claus, it's a small part of all of us!
Merry Christmas. 🎅🎄🎁
This was my brothers favorite Christmas episode. He loved it so growing up. Watched it every Christmas Eve. He passed away this December. Four days before Christmas. He was only 40. I miss him terribly.
God bless you and be with you in the huge loss of your beloved brother. For this old show to be his favorite Twilight Zone, says a lot about him. ❤️
I'm so sorry for your loss as I to lost my only brother this year too. This is also my favorite episode of all time, it always makes me happy yet sad at the same time I guess it's reflecting on the world as it is and what it could be !!
Most sincere condolences.
I cry
It's not over yet 😜
Happy 60th birthday to one of the greatest christmas specials ever made. R.i.p Rod Serling
Nice to have a twilight zone episode with a happy heartwarming fuzzy ending
Kitty Kat - Have you seen The Hunt? It's possibly the most heartwarming episode in the whole show.
@RageJoona: You're so right about "The Hunt"! It starts out sad but then turns happy and uplifting.
Also see the TZ episode "The Changing of the Guard" .... excellent and uplifting.

having great compassion for others goes a long way
And do something to relieve the suffering of others. So said The Buddha, whose non theistic spiritual philosophy has compassion as one of its major tenets.
This episode was like a great big Christmas card from Rod Serling!!
This episode always makes me cry. This one and “Changing of the Guard.”
Same here.
Absolutely! I only knew Donald Pleasance from his role in The Great Escape. He was incredibly gifted!
That's the one in the private school, right? With the old teacher forcibly retired, who learns that yes, he did win great victories for humanity, by teaching, inspiring others. Those onion-cutting ninjas are around again . . ..
I remember Pleasance in James Bond.
Why isn't this shown on TV every December?
I second that, it would be the best present you could give to your loved ones.
It is in MY house! :-)
They just showed this episode on MeTV and they're doing Christmas episodes of classic shows all December long.
Oh, it should be!
@@davidb5205 That's how I found out about it, too. This is now in my top ten Christmas shows. Brilliant episode from the mind of Rod Serling. Art Carney's observation of how Christmas should be brought me to tears.
Brilliant ending to a Twilight Zone episode, had a very "feel good" feeling to it.
+TheOSUfan46 Good to know that even Rod Serling could get into the spirit.
Proof that Rob Serling had such amazing talent for writing. He can make a sweet Christmas special that is heartwarming and there’s no need for any other twist ending. He’s great for science fiction and horror, what he’ll always be remembered for, but he can still tug on our heartstrings too
That was one remarkable and touching segment. I was a kid the first time I watched it. I am 76 now and it means even more than ever.
You're right, Jesse. Not only is it the best Christmas story ever; it's my favorite Twilight Zone episode..and it always brings a tear to my eye everytime. Thank you for posting this wonderful scene. Merry Christmas!
Great episode. He even calls Burt Mustin, "Burt."
I noticed that. On "Leave It To Beaver", they called him "Gus, the fireman".
I noticed that, too. Serling did this on other TZ episodes, too, although I can't remember which ones.
Burt's dad was killed by Jessie James on The Brady Bunch.
I remember that too “Jesse James was a killer!” Haha!
I agree with many of the comments here. Maybe another explanation is that anybody at any time, can be a Santa to others, if they open their heart, and give without regard for themselves. Anyways, that's what the spirit of Christmas means to me. The ending always fills my heart. The moment when he realizes he has found his true place in this existence.
They don't give a shit about strangers. The government throws good people in the gutter and puts children in pedophile sex rings. That's the real world.
Just saw this one again today (a bit late for the 2020 Christmas season). If Mr. Carney didn't get an Emmy for this, he should have. Wow!
One of the best episodes!
Diane Alarcon Yup
Best Christmas special ever.
The meek shall inherit the Earth.....or will they !?!?!?! Strange Xmas in 2020.....let's hope 2021 turns out Better, but I have a shadow of a doubt. Happy holidays !!!
@@robertcubinelli4961 Sadly, I must agree. 😥
Absolutely amazing episode, but the best scene of it was the heartfelt speech Art Carney gives to his boss in the department store. One of my all-time favorite moments on TV.
I’m moved to my core every time I watch this episode. First time I was bawling. Such sincerity and warmth is rarely seen.
This was the only Twilight Zone episode that brought tears to my eyes. Art Carney was superb!
Have you watched Walking Distance?
Psalms 22:26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
Dear Bible Outreach. in the last scene, the elf is played by my sister .now dr. Larrian Gillespie the last survivor of the cast.
M.A.G.A
@Bible Reading Outreach. That’s right. You had to go and bring religion and the Bible into Christmas.
@@midnightrunner684 WTF does Trump have to do with this? Go rant on another YT channel.
For her brief appearance, she was *very* sweet as an elf! 🥰
I swear every time i see it i 😢 cry a little. But it sooo ❤ heart warming. You gotta Love💓a Happy Ending. And the fact that Rod Serling birthday is christmas...great present.
This episode might be the greatest single holiday tv show in history
I agree!
This episode of The Twilight Zone puts a positive spin on that old parable, "it is better to give than to receive". 🎄
"And a Merry Christmas to each and all..."
Brings me to tears when the kids start begging for the toys and so forth. I only knew of Art Carney as Norton, What a delight to see him
play such a touching memorable role. The elf was cute also
Try to get a hold of the movie ''Harry and Tonto'', came out in the mid 70's......delight will be served to you again Art Carney at his best once more.
@@nitropost Thank you so much for letting me know, I will look that up indeed :)
it's so beautiful 😂 I love this this is what Christmas should be like every year. this episode worm's my hart every time I watch it. let this man be a example to all of us that Christmas is a time to give,to be with family and friends,to reatch out to those in. need. just as the meek did. so marry christmas. and let it be marry for many years to come ☺
Gabriel Heyd check your spelling dumb shit
Gabriel Heyd don't let Benjamin Lee get your down, I loved your comment, that is what should be in the hearts of all people, where ever they happen to be. Your spelling errors make the comment that much more endearing.
I believe Christmas is about giving not taking. Merry Christmas to you!
that's art carne.
the half hour Twilight Zone episodes may have been the best written screenplays ever. they are certainly near the top of any list. This was one of the greatest of all. Art Carney was marvelous, as usual. John Fielder, Burt Mustin and the rest were perfect. TZ seemed to always cast the right actor for each role.
This episode is shown at my house every Christmas and my kids won't get their inheritance unless they promise to show it to their grandchildren.
Rip John.F. Who played the lovable🐷🐽
Proves rod was not always doom and gloom.Art was one heck of an actor. And yes the ending was cute and warm.
Such a classic! God Bless Us all...
This is actually beautiful.
My all time favorite. Should be shown every Christmas along with Its a wonderful life.
Art Carney and Burt Mustin, two great actors. Real warmth you just don’t see much these days.
Real reindeer on the Twilight Zone!
This was one of six episodes they shot on videotape in an attempt to cut production costs.[ Those studio idiots.] Still, it has a great performance by Art Carney in a sweet and mystical teleplay by Serling. The idea of Santa being the reclamation of a lost soul is heartwarming. Two actors ubiquitous in the sixties, John Feidler and Burt Mustin, are excellent. A perennial favorite of mine.
The videotaped episodes looked like a combination of "PLAYHOUSE 90" and a daytime soap opera. Most of them were good; "The Night of the Meek" was *GREAT.* Rod, however, decided to resume the production of filmed episodes in early 1961, assuring CBS he'd watch his budgets for the rest of the series.
I watch this every christmas. Love all these old episodes
It’s been a tough year I’m glad I saw this
Art was a fabulous actor and person, loved by so many! ❤️
One of my absolute favorite Twilight Zone episodes and no one could have played the part better that Art Carney
Having a purpose in life......wonderul things can happen.
My purpose is to say " M.A.G.A "
I watch this episode every year at this time. Love Rods closing narration set to "The First Noel".
THIS EPISODE IS AN ABSOLUTE TEAR JERKER...
JUST ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL 🙏💖🌈
Rod Serling was awesome!!
This is one of 2 TZ episodes that make me cry
Same here, the only other one that makes me cry is The Changing of the Guard.
What's the other?
Ashy Pharaoh Probably “Walking Distance”
The music when he finds the sleigh..
But the other is "Walking Distance"
I will be tuning in to THIS episode every Christmas from now on
💙💙💙💙
My most favorite episode of all time!!
Love Roger that! Carney as our “flee bitten Santa”!!
An iconic moment in television history
I just saw this episode for the first last week, not sure how I missed this one. The great Art Carney
Santa Claus!!! in a league all by himself! may his generosity..be truly said of all of us!
One of the very few with a happy ending, such a heartwarming wholesome tale to bring some humble joy.
Even if you don't like spooky stories or uncomfortable endings, at least watch this episode.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
Go to hell.
Wish Christmases were still like that.
My favorite bit lasts only one second.
The moment our hero sits down in the sleigh, and picks up the reigns!
He goes from doubting what he sees to becoming St. Nick!
Beauty.
My favorite episode, such a beautiful meaning to it.
An all-time classic episode.
So... was he an ordinary man who turned into Santa Claus? Or was he Santa Claus all along, wearing the disguise of an ordinary man until Christmas Eve?
I guess as reward for his selflessness he was turned into santa
+Jim Kasprzak I think he was always the REAL Santa, since he said "nicest Christmas since the beginning of time" I think he just forgot.
Well the Elves did say they have been waiting for you for a while. So it could be Santa lost the Christmas spirit and realized why he does what he does.
Jim Kasprzak ordinary guy who became and went along to be Santa
Jim Kasprzak he was art Carney playing a part in the zone
John Fiedler at the end from the Odd Couple and 12 Angry men but most notably he was the voice of Piglet for about 4 decades. Also in Disney's Robin Hood.
Twilight Zone can be so wholesome sometimes
I have to honestly say, at 62 & having been a TZ devoted fan all of my young adult life until now; This is the most 😢heartwarming Christmas show I have ever seen. I love the way Art portrayed Santa, especially in the scene where he tells Mr. Dundee, the store manager on how people should love & have compassion for their fellowman. These are virtues our world is lacking today. I want to also say how I am moved in the last scene where just before Art leaves to the North Pole ; he bids old Burt with Merry Christmas & God Bless. We need more beloved Christmas shows like this, where God is in Christmas 😊
Hands down the best Twilight zone ever! In my opinion that is! Merry Christmas to all!
I remembered watching this when I was six years old so well. As a child there are so many things over our heads. We don't know what a director does. We are not aware of lighting or sound, art direction, why costumes are the way they are. Why a conductor sets the pace and volume of music, writing, editing, make-up, how something like this gets a go ahead with what budget. Who's idea is it to bring something like this as a finished product on television for a family to watch together. This "you tube" clip made my Christmas Jesse. Thirty minutes long. That's how long it took to make me cry again at seventy years old. This presentation should be shown to all television and motion picture science and arts students so someday we get this level of craft again. This is beyond an emmy-worthy production. It is the benchmark that all art should judged against. The best of the best of the best of the best. Such a kind thing you have done Jesse by letting us see this again.
This is by far his most powerful offering,,,God bless to all who gets this episode and takes it to heart
This is my FAVORITE episode of "The Twilight Zone". I have it on DVD, and I watch it every Christmas!!! Makes me cry every time I watch it!!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Two great character actors Burt Mustin and John Fiedler.
I've never really seen this show but from what I gather, it involves people getting caught up in nightmarish situations. The endings were always, at best, bitter sweet.
It was a pleasant surprise to learn about this episode. It's kind of like the Santa Clause but without Santa falling off that roof.
In a way this episode is kind of like that scene from A Christmas Carol, where Scrooge talks with his nephew Fred in his counting house. Scrooge is the regular Twilight Zone with his/it's negativity and Fred is this episode saying "God bless Christmas!"
I like to think that when the elf said they'd been waiting for Santa, they mean waiting for Santa to become real, someone to take up his mantle.
The Christmas episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE is outstanding! Rest in peace, Rodman Edward Serling!
The Spirit of Christmas can never be diminished as long as the meek live and believe..
The entire episode is available on Amazon Prime........... I watch it at Christmas, and it is so uplifting.
Most T zone episodes are good but this one takes the prize!
Indeed!
I beg to differ, but NOTHING IN THE DARK ALWAY'S GET THE GOLD.!!. :0D
Rod didn't write that one; George Clayton Johnson did.
This episode is truly heart warming. I can't help but tear up. One of my favorite episodes.
Check out another clip from this episode titled Santa Claus in the Twilight Zone. Art Carney makes a great speech about the meaning of Christmas.
All those people have been gone a long time now, except for Larrain Gillespie, who played the elf. It is wonderful they can live on film and show us there is still beauty and hope and faith in this so very weary world. Merry Christmas, everyone!
One of my favorite episodes
I have never seen this one before. Certainly the ending is heartwarming. This would probably be one of my favorites. Although, I have to agree that my favorite of all time is also Nothing in the Dark, and I am filled with joy to see it is someone else's as well.
Nothing in the Dark is also one of my favorites. Hard to choose a favorite when there are so many great ones.
very moving... I tear up when watching this... timeless... thank-you
One of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes.
Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
I love the Twilight Zone. I always loved this episode:)
Ed Norton as Santa... priceless.
Art was more than "Ed Norton". His acting range was incredible.
In my top 3 fav episodes of all time ! Magic stuff here guys, really. 🖒🖒🖒
In this 25 minute episode, Serling (who was Jewish) sums up the true meaning of Christmas better than any full-length Christmas movie ever produced.
True. Interesting to note that Irving Berlin, who was also Jewish, wrote "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas."
Santa had such a cute elf to ride with him!
I think it is wonderful to give, presents, your time and attention to anyone who has needs!
I just saw this episode again the other night. Art Carney stole the show.
Now THIS is a Twilight Zone twist I REALLY like! And I think it's the only one with a Happy Ending. This is why I LOVE CHRISTMAS!!!! 😍🎄🎇🎄🎇😍😍😍😍
Earl Hamner wrote a good one about a man and a dog entering into heaven. And Ed Wynn saved a little girl's life by sacrificing himself in another touching episode
"Hear the sledges with the bells, silver bells. what a world of merriment their melody foretells".
So magical, one of the best shows of all time
4:21- "And a MERRY CHRISTMAS....to each and all."
This was muted when this episode was repeated in August 1962.
Only Christmas show that rivals its a wonderful life
I just love this episode...
Rod Serling was born on Christmas Day 1924
This is a great performance by a great artist!
Probably Twilight Zone's best, and that's saying something, as many of their episodes were prime. But this gave a message without being preachy...just good old-fashioned acting and a razor-sharp script.
Tugs at the heart strings.
The ending just made me tear up a bit! 😢
One of the things I love about this episode is that for once, there's no cruel twist ending. There's no downside to the bag's gifts, nobody steals the bag at the last minute, and Henry doesn't get cursed by the bag at all. After a night of making people happy, the only "twist" is that now, he gets to become the real Santa Claus instead of just being an actor.
Why oh why have they not restored the final line, "and a Merry Christmas to each and all."😞
CBS, even at that time, thought saying "Merry Christmas" would offend some
people... now their children are dishing out the same feeble BS....
Carney did an excellent job of portraying a man bedevilled by PTSD. I remember many men of that age who were scarred by the war. They turned to alcohol to try and forget the things they had seen and done.
Corwin believed that by being Santa Claus that he could, in some small way, exorcise his demons.
It's been my guess for years that the event that sent him over the edge took place on Christmas Eve or Christmas itself, perhaps finding the body of a small child in the rubble of a home, with Christmas decorations and unopened presents strewn about.
My hope is that Corwin, and all men like him, find the peace in death that was stolen from them by life.
This was on last night (Christmas Day Night) ... what timing.
One of the few live television broadcasts of "The Twilight Zone".
Live on tape. This was produced three weeks before Christmas in 1960.
It was the rare episodes like this... the ones that weren’t necessarily going for the “creepy” aspect that made the show a million times better.
