  • Campeche is a colourful colonial town in the west of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but seemed a little deserted to us. The locals and the hustle and bustle tended to be in the neighbourhoods outside the city walls.
The ruins of Palenque are majestically nestled in Mexico's tropical rainforest and bear witness to the former splendour of the Mayan metropolis. For us, it was the most impressive Mayan city to have been visited so far, with the burial chamber of King Pakal, artistic hieroglyphs and frescoes as well as a unique surrounding area.
