They are not the biggest club in switzerland. They just are the most succesful club in the country. They are not present in the city. They are the club for the rich people, while FCZ is the working class. Their succesful times are now just history since many years. Their owner are chinese, their fans are maybe 10% from zurich and their main trainings camp isn't even in the city. The only thing which associates them with the City Zurich, is their name. They should probably change it to Niederhasli or China. At least 80% of the of the football fans in zurich are FCZ fans anyways, so nobody would care at all. So, to answer your question: GC is irrelevant since at least 20 years. Thats why they got so few fans. Even the newly promoted team, Winterthur (also in the Canton Zurich), have a higher average attendance than GC. They are just not present in the City of Zurich.
Its because the last 15 - 20 years where quite though the lost their homestadion and are playing in the stadium of fc zurich since then. They also had to move their campus outside the city. Also the management of the club was really bad in the last few years. 2 years ago it reached a new low with chinese investors buying up 90 % of the shares while Grasshoppers were relegated into the 2 division. (Fair to say that the chinese investement actually saved the club from extinction) Many fans lost interested in the club because they couldnt identify with it anymore longer. Others didnt boycot the homestadion of fc zurich. Meanwhile FC Zurich was managed really good in the last 20 years so also alot of fans switched sides.. another reason is the propopanga the fc zurich fans did in the last 10 years with slogans "one town one club" or "zurich is ours" or walking in groups of 10 through the city asking strangers if they are supporting Grasshoppers if the said yes the would get robbed or worse. This got to the point where family fathers wearing Grasshopper merchandise got attacked infront of their children etc. This also reached its peak in the last 2 years. So many points add up to the current situation. But its getting better but also fc zurich is gaining more and more fans. The old fact that Grasshopper is the club of the rich and fc zurich the club of the working people doesnt apply anymore.
