Daphne and Velma are traveling along Highway 20 in the old Dinkley family station wagon that Velma had been given for her 16th birthday.
"Hey, slow down, Velma!" Daphne exclaimed as the car sped along the roadway at nearly 80 MPH. "You're going way too fast!"
"Can't help it, Daphne!" Velma replied. "The brakes don't work anymore!" Daphne did a facepalm just before the car hit a spike strip. With all four tires blown, the car went flying off the road and tumbled over multiple times before coming to a stop. Both girls were dazed but otherwise unhurt. Daphne called Fred on her cell phone.
"Fred, it's Daphne. Someone put a spike strip on Highway 20, and it took us out. We're both okay, but we need a ride back home." After shutting off the phone, she said to Velma, "The others are on their way to pick us up."
Thirty minutes later, the Mystery Machine came into view... only to hit the same spike strip and wipe out. Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby all got thrown around in the van as it flipped over. Luckily, none of them were seriously hurt in the crash, but both the station wagon and the van were completely written off as total losses. (Not exactly the best way to celebrate the big 5-0...)
