  • Degenerative scoliosis is very common among adult patients. There are cases where the adult patient has had scoliosis since their teenage years but was never diagnosed. These cases are called adolescent scoliosis in the adult stage.
The main causes of adult degenerative scoliosis are changes in bone density, which leads to slight compression and fractures of the spine. Another reason is that the adult patient could have trauma occur to the spine. This trauma causes a spinal shift and a curve to develop. It is important to note that adolescent scoliosis in the adult stage could also turn into degenerative scoliosis. This degeneration is triggered by how fast the curve progresses.

In both cases, the adult patient could present the following symptoms:
Loss of height: the patient's spine is compressed and shortened as a result of the condition.
Lower back pain: this could worsen as the curve gets bigger. In some patients, the pain can increase in the evening and reduce in the morning after resting.
    Neck pain
    Headaches
Limited mobility and flexibility of the spine
Older patients benefit from being able to stand and walk without limits. The lack of mobility and flexibility that comes with scoliosis could impact a patient's longevity. It is common to see adult degenerative scoliosis get worse as time passes. This progression is caused by gravity, which compresses the spine even more as the patient gets older.
To treat degenerative scoliosis effectively, Dr. Nalda uses a functional treatment approach designed to restore the spine's function, make it strong enough to stabilize itself, slow down and stop the scoliosis progression and improve the patient's mobility and flexibility. This method is different from the traditional approach where pain management is the focus, they use painkillers and injections, but nothing to manage the curve.
This functional treatment plan focuses on the following methods:
    1. Chiropractic care: this is specific for scoliosis to reduce misalignments and manage pain.
    2. Scoliosis-specific therapy (SSTs) and rehabilitation: this is done in the office, and it's designed to increase flexibility, reduce the curve, reduce nerve pressure, and allow chiropractic care to be more effective.
    3. Home therapy and exercises: these are done in coordination with in-office treatment and rehab.
    4. ScoliBrace: this is a corrective brace designed to reduce the scoliosis curve effectively.
These methods have proven to reduce scoliosis, reduce pain, and increase mobility in patients of all ages.

Degenerative Scoliosis is the most common case seen in adults. This case can only occur in the adult stage. Changes in bone density and hormonal changes during menopause can lead to the progression of scoliosis. One other cause could be trauma related and can lead to a spinal shift. Loss of height is one result of degenerative scoliosis, because of the compressive nature of the spine. Adults are also more likely to experience pain that increases with activity and time. Due to gravity, an adult curve will almost always progress leading to more problems. Because of the degenerative nature of the spine, a patient’s mobility and flexibility will be limited. Therefore, it is very important to seek out treatment early. The Scoliosis Reduction Center utilizes a functional treatment plan to restore function back into the spine. This plan involves chiropractic care, scoliosis specific exercises and home therapy. A scoliosis brace can also be specially designed for a patient to help reduce a curve. Dr. Nalda’s patients have received great results that not only reduce their pain level but their curve.

How would you be able to tell if it’s degenerative or just idiopathic? I’m 19 and half and was just diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis and I’m worried that it will get worse as I’ve been in pain for about 9 months now, and it just keeps getting worse
