    I'm with you on the idea of leather sheaths. I make my own sheaths, party because I'm left handed, and partly because I like a nice custom fit to my blades. Most of my knives are ones that I "assemble" myself ( someone else's blade, my own handle scales ). Fun hobby that makes very useful items. They make great gifts for friends and family.

    Last time l checked, these are still Made in USA.
    Still have my dad's USMC KaBar that he carried island hopping in the Pacific Theatre in WWll.
    From Gudacansl to Guam, he was there and helped get the job done with his KaBar!

    Almost all ancient swords, daggers, etc were iron tangs scarf welded to a steel blade. It's just the way things were done. Historically they preferred a bend to a break. Full width tangs is a British Patent from the mid-late 1800's that became an upgrade option on British sabers of the day.

  • @longrider42
    @longrider42 Před 6 dny

    Bought my USMC Kabar Fighting and Utility knife. And yes that is what is it called. Way back in the 80's, so it has the stacked leather handle. Which has now darkened nicely with use. Mine has a very nice brown powder coat, and the clip, is extremely sharp. I also house it in a leather sheath. Yes I am very old school. And I used to carry this knife with me every evening in the summer of 1995, when I worked as a night made in Grant Village, Yellowstone National Park. Its a trusted old friend. Which I keep next o my bed :)

    I have many Kabar knives - probably 10 different models. My thoughts/constraints/situation lead me to recommend 2 models. Plain edge, short tanto with Kraton handle and US Navy knife plain edge Mark 1 with Kraton handle. They are a size that you can carry and will carry all day when a longer blade version will be left in the safe. They can function well as an every day tool or a defensive knife. Remember, the skills (carving, slicing, fighting, cutting) are in the person and not the tool. You also will survive in a group and not as Rambo or Daniel Boone. It is a knife that your elementary school child or a house wife can carry all day.

    Most reviews these days are folks asking a knife to perform unreasonable tasks. The Kabar and stick tangs work fine for their intended purpose.
    Many times a reviewer doesn’t treat the tool with the reverence someone has for an object they’ve spent hard earned money on.
    Daniel I’ve always enjoyed your style of reviews, thanks.

    I've mentioned my KaBar collection in the past here, but I still don't appreciate the Tanto style as you and others do. I have been looking again at the full size "modified" Tanto and once I start doing that I usually pull the trigger. But that is probably my limit down the Tanto path. I of course still EDC my full size black Fighting knife, I love it in conjunction with my special order Buck 110 Auto or one of my Strongarm's. Also on my belt daily you'll find a Leatherman Wave. In my boot is a Smith & Wesson double edge dagger....so, I'm set with whatever comes down the pike. My Uncle served in Vietnam 25th Inf 1/5 Mech but did not carry the KaBar...he carried a Buck 120...and did use it if you know what I mean. It is on display in one of his Military Shadow boxes. I have many KaBar and Buck knives and now have an appreciation for Cold Steel...they are just fun.

    In my experience. The Modified Kabar Tanto has superior penetration and slashing abilities tha the Regular Kabar Tanto. When using it on soft targets (flesh). However, if you want to penetrate car doors,. Go with the Regular Kabar Tanto. A few years ago . I purchased some Clip point Kabars and was pleasantly surprised. That the Clip points were all sharpened. Now days I believe all of the Clip Point Kabars for sale. All of the clip points are shipped dull. No doubt because a sharpened clip point is considered a double edge knife. Thus, illegal to carry in some area.

    Thanks for the video.
    I can see where the rat-tail tang would be easier and cheaper to produce during the war, and once these knives had a good reputation in service with this design, I can see why the company wouldn't change what had worked. I still believe that a full tang of some kind would be stronger. Even a somewhat skeletonized tang would be stronger if designed properly because of the moment of inertia. They wouldn't have done that during the war because that would add to manufacturing time and expense. Given their reputation, I wouldn't reject getting a Ka-Bar for that reason.
    I rarely pay attention to fashion for myself. I just don't look good enough anyway for that to be an issue. If I were thinking in terms of fashion, I'd want a leather sheath. When I'm doing model photography that includes a knife, I want the model wearing a leather sheath. I don't have a preference between nylon and kydex in terms of appearance. I can see the advantage to kydex in not getting and staying wet. I think many of my sheaths are nylon, and that's fine with me too.
    I better not look at the links. I'm over budget already this summer.

    Cutco brand makes a good stainless. They use surgical grade stainless. It's a very solid blade and construction. My only qualm with it is that against the handle. They added 2 inches of serations ... wich makes it pretty much usless as a bushcraft or wood carving knife. And of course... after I spent 200 on that one. They came out with a beautiful straight edge hunter I would have much rather got iinstead.:/

    Had one of those years ago. It was a fine well made knife. The handle was my main gripe. Too round. I found it poor for indexing edge alignment and too easy to rotate in the hand. For my preferences, Cold Steel and Ontario had similar options with better design (of course Ontario is in limbo as it was just sold, so who knows what their knives will look like in the future).
