A fun fact confirmed by Jorge: the ghosts in the Underworld are simply repeating their final thoughts. The soldiers were blaming Odysseus for everything going wrong Polites still believed in open arms Anticlea (Ody's mom) never stopped hoping her son would come home Also, while not exactly confirmed in the musical (all that's said is that she died on a broken heart), in the source material Odysseus' mom basically offed herself after the crew opened the bag of winds. They were so close to home that she saw the ships get blown away, thought her son died, and walked into the ocean to join him. Also in the books, Odysseus tries to hug his mom's ghost 3 times, but obviously fails.
Small note of my own interpretation- IN many versions of animatics, Odysseusis wearing Polites' headband. Polites advocated generosity, kidness and love. And in the moment he decides to become 'the monster' Penelope removes Polites' headband. Because even though his best friend died believing in the good of his friend... Odysseus has turned against his wishes.
You missed it because the previous animatic in the Circe Saga wasn't finished. But he stopped Circe from trying to kill him while seducing him. And cried about not seeing his wife in a long time and that Poseidon was after him. So she felt pity and told him of a Prophet in the Underworld he can talk to to get home. And that's what's happening now.
