Strange seeing him on the late show, he was my maths teacher back in 06 and was cracking jokes even back then. Nice to see how far he's come. Good luck Sir!
Really? That’s really cool.
aly teima well, I say cracking jokes but it was more of a subtle humour mixed with a bit of sarcasm
Wow, what grade did he teach?
Cal Williams He was teaching GCSE maths which we take in year 11 ( I guess 11th grade for US)
Waqas Ali so cool. Thanks for the response. What was it like having such a famous teacher?
The facial expression at the end was basically: "WAIT - the interview is over already?!"
US chat shows can be ridiculously short.
This guy thought he was on Parkinson hahaha
He was going on a bit with that story though. Didn't have much more after "I like the look"
Modern Spirit “Islam is evil!” - *guy in Stephen’s earpiece:* *_OK WE’RE DONE HERE!!_*
@@Lumibear. Christ, did you even comprehend the point of the story. Muppet.
Yes, I agree yes, did you?
Christ he’s only just arrived and they’ve already slimmed him down, whitened his teeth, changed his glasses and put him in a suit. By the time we get him back his eyes will be straight.
😂 I love him but that was straight savage
Pmsfl. Gotta love im.
😂😂😂😂
Is it that called UK sexy ?
They also trimmed his beard and cut his hair.
Preferring New York because it has a comforting vibe of hostility is the most British thing ever
I always feel like that when I’m in the US. Most Americans are too loud, too friendly, too in your face. I like people who are a bit standoffish - it’s what I’m used to!

Nah in the North of England we are friendly its a southern thing lol
Most southern British thing more like
It's a London thing. If people come up to me in the street, on the underground etc, and just start talking to me, I'm think to myself "The f*ck is this crazy person talking to me for"?

@@mellowmonsoon278 Do not want to piss on your bonfire, but it seems that the majority of people in the UK are not that smart either. I mean, Boris Johnson? really?
Torben Yeah , Brits seems inspired by the cousins of the other side of Atlantic. My bonfire is uninterrupted by both Americans or Brits lol
@@mellowmonsoon278 - Well, didn´t the entire Brexit thing start before Trump has been elected?
It is just a bit arrogant to claim to be superior to the US when in fact there is no leg to stand on. Also, especially during these times it would be wise to be more tolerant and not incite more tensions. But that is just my (indeed not funny) perspective.
Torben still not smart, if you know how our politics work you would know we did not even vote him in. 🤦🏽♀️ ah yeah this fits ‘dumb American’ 😅
That was the most abrupt and awkward end I've ever seen in an interview.
Too many ads on US TV.
Chomsky talks about this.
Always seems like there is no room to breathe on US talk shows. Even when watching a sitcom you get cold open and intro, ad break, first half, ad break, second half, ad break, then titles, then another ad break... its fucking brutal.
I'm sure it was a time thing but it kind of looked like Stephen cut him off because it was a pretty average story.
@@Cyba_IT if you cut off a comedian before the punchline of the joke it's always going to sound like just an average story.
TREE WIZAAARD, how many times will he check the balloon?!
CZcams just put TaskMaster into my recc list. Freaking love this show haha. Been binging it the past few days.
@@adamtak3128 It's SO good.
“OH my gawd it’s another balloon!” That video always cracks me up!
Took him ages to find that song.
Romesh is the one who immediately sold me on the show during the very first challenge. That was god-tier performance.
Romesh is an absolute great UK comedian. Sending love and respect from here in England.
Do you realize how nonsensical it is for a Jewish person to be a racist? Fucking idiot
I was thinking the exact same thing. Facepalm*
It sounds like he's from London, with his: I don't want to talk to people, I like NYC.
He may not even be Jewish, lots of antisemites pose as Jews to troll.
Ari Goldstein You have got to be a troll and you are using the star of David to just spew hatred. You are a very miserable individual!
We lost Romesh?! NOOOOOOOO!

Yeah, I didn't know either. 😥
If Britain doesn't stay in the EU, he won't either.
Don't know if America is the next best thing at the moment though...
He's replacing Jack Whitehall on A League of Their Own, so that's good news :D
Oooh he's from the commercials
Amongst the best of the new wave of comedians.
I’m originally from London and enjoyed the anonymity that the city brings. But there was a time of my life where I’d lost somebody dear to me with cancer, and spent 3 months (lots of it alone) in Southern California. Just sitting at a diner, and people being friendly to a stranger with a different accent, genuinely helped heal my heart. And I’ll always be grateful for that. Even if I have ultimately reverted to being the typical Londoner who walks about ignoring everybody
The end bruh ☠️😭
Well, Nick, glad you can admit that niceness has its place.
English people are very sociable, get out more Nick.
The thing about London is that every commuter is stressed and feels grumpy and just wants their journey to be over. Everyone imagines that everyone else feels the same and wants to be left alone. Londoners are always being approached on the streets, often by people trying to sell you something, give you some junk advertising, drunkenly rail at you, or some other unwanted contact, so they learn to avoid eye contact, keep their heads down and move swiftly on. However when I tripped up in the middle of the road and fell over, some guy from behind lifted me up. I didn't even see him coming and when I turned around to thank him he was already heading off fast away from me. I called out a thank you to his back. People can be kind when they see a need. In Liverpool however, you can walk into a pub and easily get into a safe, convivial and interesting conversation with a stranger with no hidden agenda.
We don't a need the same things. Kindness has its place. Perhaps you can do this for someone else one day. Who knows
I remember being on holiday with a friend of mine in Spain. He's Indian and we were both teenagers at the time. We were in the elevator going down to the main lobby in our hotel, and some white guy in the elevator confronts my friend and says quite aggressively "are you Muslim?", my friend said "no" (because he wasn't). But the guy wasn't having it - "you're lying, you are a Muslim" angrily, we both were making it clear that he wasn't a Muslim. But we could see this white man getting even angrier because for some reason, all brown people in his eyes must be scary Jihadis. At this point we were terrified cause this guy must have been double our age. Luckily we got down to the lobby before things escalated and told security, but it was scary as hell. Imagine if my friend was a Muslim, what would that guys response have been? What right does this stranger have to "check" another persons religion as if it affects them as a character?
We were at a beach resort in Spain, my friend was a skinny teenage boy in a Hawaii pattern shirt. He clearly wasn't dangerous, just like Romesh wasn't as he walked in to that L.A. bar. But some white people just see brown skin and feel the need to "check" that the brown person isn't a threat.
And a Muslim is a "threat"?!?!?! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
that is true . when did it happen with your friend ?
I have Muslim friends most of whom I've known since school. Literally, people I've known since I was 13. I have had people on social media make comments. Not surprisingly, I severed contact with the people making comments.
@@Q_QQ_Q I'm sorry what is true exactly?
Spain was a segregated society, when I was in Madrid in the 90s, in that racial stereotypes were very rarely broken, Conguitos adverts were all over the TV, Chinese people only worked in restaurants or sold you roses, etc. However, the only aggro my mate of Indian descent got was from a couple of Aussie wankers in a bar. They couldn't keep up with his rapier Colindale wit and were easily dispatched.
tbh that personal account was pretty captivating and i like the casual way it was told. i prob couldve listened to him talk for another 10~ minutes and i was sorta annoyed when it seemed to abruptly end.
soupsnake well it was captivating despite stephen’s sub par interviewing. he doesn’t interview funny people well
yeah i felt like there was more to the convo
Well, it's a youtube clip. Maybe there was more on the actual show.
i could have only listened to him for another 1:37.
Stephen did cut him off in the middle of the routine, and it was really abrupt. It's a shame, but this is a television show, and the guy is a slow speaker.
pretty ignorant to think just because a guy is brown and has a beard that he might be a Muslim... especially considering that he is going into a bar.
well, it sounds like he let the misconception slide for the purpose of the story because he isnt a muslim. he is from a sri lankan background and was raised hindu...
There are Muslims that drink. Liberal ones especially. Drank with em myself.
There's many people from all religions that don't follow the principles

I identified with this man immediately when he said he didn't like being spoken to.
Life must be pretty painful for you.
Hey man, believe it or not, some people just don't like talking to people. Just like I can't comprehend how people can have bustling exhaustive social lives, always out at bars or parties, you probably can't comprehend how someone could actually feel solace, or even enjoyment, in simple solitude. I have a few close friends I talk to daily (although I have gone a day or two without talking to anyone), but I definitely don't go out hoping for interesting conversation with total strangers.

'colonial descendant' implies a despise of foreigners and immigrants is genetic. It's not, it's conditioned by nurture (not nature). That's the real reason why some americans are racial, moreso in this time of favoring tribalism, vendettas and choices based on emotions over facts.
The south and eastern seaboard are more conservative in their values, versus the western states which still exude their pioneering tradition, cause their communities prolonged those values.
I'd have loved to hear what the second thing was...
Can Stephen please learn how to pronounce names correctly???
It's "Roe-maysh Run-guh-nah-thun".
Dude is clearly British before Indian, but I identify as American before Indian and still want my name pronounced correctly.
nahor88 well actually that's how he pronounced his own name in several of his standup specials so i figure stephen was just doing the same
w0bblegirl
That's really sad then... he's clearly pandering to his audience. Even if the person identifies by their country of origin, if they have an ethnic name, it should be pronounced correctly.
nahor88 He's of Sri Lankan descent btw
Aaron Alphonsus
My bad, thanks for clarifying. My argument still applies.
I don't think his story was over. He said two things happened to him. This was just one and I'm sure there was a punch line to it that was left out as well. Boo! Colbert isn't very good at interviewing other comics/comedians.
It's not up to Colbert. With these talk shows everything is VERY timed and the producers were likely talking in his ear and signalling that he had to wrap it up.
He just spent 5 minutes saying he hates everyone and avoiding eye contact with Stephen, it's not great television. And because of that, we never heard from him again...
@@GlennDavey Yeah his deadpan, glass half empty sense of humour isn't fit for American audiences. That's why he can stay in the UK where we all love him.

That ended as abruptly as the drink 🍹
Brodie-tzu ..hate that about Colbert...why he does that...err, tacky! Cuts them off so quickly beyond rude...😬😬
Overthemoon Probably because a producer is in his ear telling him he absolutely has to go to a commercial break.
I never understood this show format.
They do it to all guests. Why bother with this short talk at all?
I personally think Stephen Colbert just likes to hear his own voice. His demenaor has changed over the years since the Colbert report days. Seems more righteous/pretentious.
Can we have Romesh back in the UK, he’s too funny to lose 😂
You could've at least waited for him to finish his sentence before you ended the interview, Stephen.
When my favourite British comedians go to America I get so nervous but I thought he did really well!
Ladi Smith I thought Americans had a different sense of humour to brits
There are more Anglophiles in the U.S. than you may realize (although you're certainly right about the majority). I've enjoyed Ramesh's brand of sarcastic wit for some time now on various British panel shows, and was glad to see him here. Now if I could only lure Nish Kumar and Ed Byrne across the pond...
I didn't think his style would come across well on Colbert, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Ad Max - agreed. And, ah yes, Stewart Lee - maestro of the absurd. 😁
I prefer British humor usually. Rape jokes are so old.
Aw man, I wanted to hear the end of his story.
Hope Sean Evans gets RR on got one, and asks him to complete his story!
Tingle Matthews - how the hell would you know? Were you there? Would it suit your Fluffy Trumpyland fantasy that there is no such thing as racism in America if he had made it all up?

People in the South East are just less trusting and aren't friendly unless they've got to know and trust you. 'No I just like the look ' ... lol🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had no idea Romesh had made the trip over to America. Good for him. Either he was visiting Britain the last time I saw him on British TV, or my temporal awareness is out of whack.
He was oddly subdued. I thought he'd be more mindful of the laughs-per-minute dealie on late night shows in America. Stephen, for all his talent, hasn't quite nailed down the interview thing. It's _not_ a slight, at all. I've noticed it on a few occasions, he'll let someone hang for a bit too long, or he'll stick to the card. I've noticed it mostly with stand ups, although to be fair, I only watch segments on CZcams, which means I'm far more likely to click on an interview segment if it's a stand up.
While I'm on it, I've not watched one of his monologues for a few weeks, mostly because of the day-to-day diarrhea splat that is the quasi-president. Basically, I've winnowed my trump intake, news-based or satirical, to a few indie media outlets, John Oliver and Sam Bee. As a result, I don't know if the dynamic between Stephen and Jon has improved.
Was he slightly high? - was what I thought. Great stuff as usual though.
Maybe......that’s just the way that he was.
Yeah you've hit the nail pm the head Stephen is either or miss with quote a few interviews like I feel like he doesn't do the greatest interviews with other comedians
Stephen or Romesh?
Did you see Won't You Be My Neighbor? I think Stephen has actually mastered Mr. Rogers' interview technique where you leave the subject hanging for a few too many seconds and they'll actually just spill more of their guts to you.
I would have said, "Did you know that Jesus was a Jewish immigrant?"
A little obsessive, aren't you, Mo? Andrew made a joke and you went into an unintelligible rant.
I said unintelligible. As in incoherent. Google it
Andrew Flowers an illegal one at that
Where did he immigrate to? As far as I know he led his life in the Roman Empire...
Hard to be an immigrant when you are born, raised and die in the same country.
Ugh, the look on Romesh’s face after he told that story as they were cutting away to the end; he was NOT happy with how that experience for him shook out.
To be fair, Romesh did say he likes being ignored, and he got his wish.
Better off staying in Britain. The British can take dark jokes and move on with their life. Remember Jimmy Carr's show on The Late Night? Same routine but he had to tone it down a bit, even then people were "oohhh"-ing. SMH. I'd really like Frankie Boyle to showcase his dark comedy in the US, the entire country would fall.

if someone asks you "are you muslim?" and then "i'm going to buy you a drink"

Romesh has come a long way. Glad we've got him back with us in the UK.
Shame the interview was cut short! There was a lot of potential there. Give him a chance America, he is funny as hell :)
Wooohoo lets go Romesh !!!!
My fellow Sri Lankan and UK man. Good luck to you here in the US.
We need a, " Romesh: Comedians In Pubs Talking Comedy" series here.
He had a series here in the UK. Just not at pubs but more like greasy spoon types of places but with consciousness I don't think are known well elsewhere
Yeah same here - I like to choose who I'm going to have a conversation with. I live in the North of England we are a friendly bunch and the conversation is usually good, but if I was in London just leave me alone :-)
My two favs finally meeting!
Never heard of this guy but he's funnier than most US talk show hosts
watch some of his stand-up clips on CZcams. he is a very funny man...his shtick is he's frustrated, annoyed, ticked, angry at everything...and he rips into his kids something fierce! Recommended.
@@davidjackson6835 trust me, in the month since I posted this comment I have become well acquainted with him 😆
Have you been living under a rock???
British comedians are funnier than American comedians as our humour is darker, dry and we are the masters of dead pan humour.
"Dunno what to say, how to answer, or how to end this...." (so shake hands and cut to break.)
Weird way to end a segment.
I barely wanna talk to people I know...lmao....thats how I feel every minute of my life
Teresa Martino talk to me random woman
My mum lived in LA for a year, said the exact same thing about the people - how everyone goes:
"How are you?"
And no one actually wants to hear anything other than:
"Real good!"
4:53 "are you Muslim?"
"No, I just like the look!"
Hate, as comic fodder...brilliant..turning it on its ear. Good job, mate!
Well done Romesh!
I need longer interviews with him 👍🏽❤️
Very good interview
Romesh is just a natural comedian. lol!!
I was wondering why I hadnt seen Romesh on any british shows in a while. I would love to see how his humour would go down in the US. He is so harsh
"I like not being spoken to. It's one of my favorite things."
He's moved to the U.S?? 😯 I'm going to miss him on Mock the Week!! 😢
That description though
YEA ROMESH doing big TINGSSSSS
Went down like a lead balloon in this interview.
Oh snap welcome to US Romesh! I’m a big fan!
ahhh I love Romesh! Happy to see him on this side of the pond!
The music that plays when the annotations pop up at the end make me want to gouge my eyes out for some reason
"I can feel a little vibe of hatred that I like..."
Oh yer gonna loooove the South.
New Message yeah, all my immigrant friends all say they love how nice the people in the south are to them. I know about 2/3 of them are concealing their hatred if them.
I'm from the south. We're no more or less racist than those from the rest of the country. There's actually a lot of diversity here.
He went to the south in the travel tv show he mentioned
I'm from India and I live in the south. I love the south. Stop with the stereotype.
@@forestnymphconfessions3596 are you from Florida?
Love Romesh. Wish the interview had been longer!
3.30 , i can relate to that view, not wanting to talk to alot of people... well done
He was really impressed as an interviewer couldn't wait to get rid of him.
My brother drinks and my family is Muslim .. I am myself atheist my parents don’t put bomb in my closet
lol real muslim life an islamophobe will see ur comments an say something dumb eventually i shile sit an wait lol. salaam
If you want to Romesh at his best, watch the TV series on his journey back to Sri Lanka and the episode in which "King Kong" appears. Its a work of genius.
Romesh is a legend in our house , an honour to see him doing so well .Good on ya
Hope you come back to the UK soon!!
He comes from Crawley, my home town!!!!
My condolences.
