Could this movie afford to be deeper and more nuanced with its plot and characters? Absolutely. But despite those deficits, it more than makes up for that with a genuinely surreal atmosphere from Burton and larger than life performances from its actors, that even your most well written movies don’t deliver on. Still my favorite Batman film, with Nicholson's a close second. I'd rather have the 30's dark, gothic aesthetic with villains going over the top and Keaton playing it cool. I don't care about how society would react to chaos, social experiments, or a batmobile that's a tank. As time goes on, I think people are realizing more and more why Burton had the best vision and execution
This is my first Batman movie ever, that made him my favorite superhero ever since. There’s also Batman: The Animated Series, which is still considered a classic to this day, being inspired by Burton’s aesthetics in his movies.
That's facts. With the points that you have said, it's Canon to me that Tim Burton's version of Batman set the stage for Batman would be in the future through the movies and the animated series.

Devito's Penguin is probably the best villain in any Batman movie. Joaquin Phoenix' Joker doesn't count 'cause it wasn't really a Batman movie, otherwise, it might've been close between him and the Penguin. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman would take the second place and Jack Nicholson's Joker the third. Then, a lot worse than any of the previously mentioned, would be the Nolan movie villains in almost any order. Heath Ledger's Joker was decent and the rest of them were either paper thin or just boring.
As Batman Returns is the best Batman film ever, imo, I agree. DeVito's Penguin just sticks with me more than any other Batman villain due to his tragic backstory and twisted nature, which drives the entire plot of the movie. That 5-minute or so opening sequence with Baby Oswald getting abandoned by his parents tells the viewer why he turned out the way he did. And Burton SHOWED it to us in a scene with visuals, silent acting, music instead of over-explaining with a bunch of dialogue. Penguin is simultaneously sympathetic and evil. DeVito's Penguin is the best actual Batman movie villain, while Phoenix's Joker just based on his phenomenal performance is the best live action representation of a DC Comics character. These are definitely my top 2 as well. Nicholson is the #2 Joker for me. I would say that I actually did like the villains in Batman Begins. Ras, Falcone, and Scarecrow were presented well, but I think Begins is a much better film than TDK, where I think Ledger was the only actor in that entire movie that acted well. I felt like Ledger's Joker did a bunch of random stuff with an army of lackeys that was never explained well, while we saw Nicholson's Joker rise up to be a crime boss plus he told jokes and was hilarious.
I just gotta give credit where it is due to my man Danny Devito. His preformance as The Penguin is iconic but take note to make him look taller he was wearing wooden stilts in his 👢. The fact he could do that jump heel tap without blowing out his ankles shows skill.
Nolan may have been a good director, but in restropect he seems like the only one afraid to admit his Batman movies were based on comics. And before anybody says "What about Matt Reeves?", the guy is reportedly working on movies for Professor Pyg and Clayface, to not to mention he is working on a new animated show alongside Bruce Timm (and J.J. Abrams).
The whole kidnapping children thing made this movie a bit weird. I get why he has issues, but they could have given Penguin a better goal than being a butt hurt orphan that wants revenge by killing other first born sons. Even the script is aware of this when one of his henchmen questions it before getting shot by Penguin.
Oswald was a child who had his whole life ripped from him. A child who's family threw him into a river on Christmas. Nobody in his life ever loved him, and he never had anyone to love other that his penguins. His choice to kill the sons of Gotham was not out of nowhere. Tim Burton has said that it was Oswald's plan all along, and that when he was in the public records office he wasnt looking for his parents, he was getting the names and addresses of the children. He was a twisted soul beyond redemption
Penguin’s speech and the army charging into Gotham would be something Salem from RWBY might say as she leads her legions of Grimm to beacon in the final volume maybe.
Silly as the plan sounds on paper, I appreciate that Penguin had a contingency plan if his first fell through. Most villains have the one endgame for the hero to thwart, but Penguin has Batman going overtime.
Batman leaving notes for criminals is a more forgotten aspect of the character that goes back to his original comics. He even left a note for Bane in Knightfall. But to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time he gave it to a monkey to deliver.
Honestly? This was one of Burtons best flicks. You can tell Danny, Michael, and Michelle were having fun as their roles but if you ask me? This one made Danny a very recognizable and talented man. I love his flicks (Death to Smoochy, LA Confidential, Twins, Matilda,) but to me this one made me see him in the best light, both as a villain and a character
as much as I pity his character, I couldn't forgive him for sending the penguins on a suicide mission. He truly loves them and yet he still puts revenge before his babies.
True, but keep in mind that the location they're living in is highly toxic. For all we know the penguins were all terminally ill from swimming in all that polluted water, and would've died in a few months.
@@Asertix357 Although it was never so much as hinted, that the birds were sick, who's to say that wasn't the case? Either way I love that idea. The Penguins' rationale being: humanity poisons my babies, I use my babies to kill not just the first born, but multiple generations of humanity. Great irony and it takes a lot of the responsibility of the dead birds off of The Penguin.

And before anybody says "What about Matt Reeves?", the guy is reportedly working on movies for Professor Pyg and Clayface, to not to mention he is working on a new animated show alongside Bruce Timm (and J.J. Abrams).
I love how Batman puts "Dear" lol
The special effects are amazing
"Dear Penguin, the children regret they are unable to attend, have a disappointing day - Batman"
AAAAAAAAAAAAGGHHHHHHH!!!!!
Gotta love how the Penguin had a plan A, B, and C.

Hitler: thats my cousin!

0:33. Gees he totally lost it
Batman leaving notes for criminals is a more forgotten aspect of the character that goes back to his original comics. He even left a note for Bane in Knightfall. But to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time he gave it to a monkey to deliver.
Suicide Squad actors when they find Jared Leto's used condoms in their mail 0:35
“IT’S OKAY TO BE SCARED!!!” This always makes me smile
I honestly think that this batman is the greatest superhero of dc
Most inspiring speech of all time
esta escena no tiene precio, es espectacular
esto era cine
AAARRRHHHH!!!!!! THE CITY'S UNDER ATTACK BY A GIANT ARMY OF PENGUINS! RUN!!!!
The campiness certainly returned with this movie.
Also this is the greatest movie
0:43 I love The Penguin’s entrance 😂😂😂, he just looks so fed up and desperate, that Batman isn’t dead yet and he just destroys his plans like most Batman villains
As Two-Face once said “WHY WON’T YOU JUST DIE!!!”
Danny DeVito is the best Penguin actor ever
Robin Lord Taylor did a great job too
@@ryanstauffer119 and Colin Farrell
The way he said "My dear Penguins." He sounded so hurt... He wishes it didn't come to using his babies to stop Batman but he feels like he has to.
Came here after Danny Devito told the story about "the incident" 😂
@supernova girl Danny Devito said that his penguin costume scared the monkey, and the monkey leaps at his ball's. 😂
@supernova girl yea
Is there a video of him talking about it on CZcams?
@@captainhorrible1731 yea it was on one of those talk shows, I can't remember which one it was
@@bwilliam6287 I'll look into it, thanks
I love the way danny screams “AAAAAAAAAÆEEEEEEEEEEGH!”
I could imagine if hopper said that speech to his gang causing the liberation of ant island to begin
I love the music from 1:41 to 2:03.
Me too! Really sets an epic tone, but you can also feel Penguin’s anger and desperation

here we go :)
Batman has such neat handwriting. The lines on the paper are perfectly straight.
12 years old I saw this when Penguin got the note and screamed Ahhhhhhhhhh the audience laughed pretty funny lmao
The General Patton of penguins.
Like him or not there is no way you can deny that Danny's performance in this film was over the top

I don't blame him for that
one of the best parts of this movie
After Batman stopped Penguin's plan to kidnap the first born sons of Gotham he switched to plan b destroy the city.
with an army of penguins lol
