  • This legendary April Fool's broadcast from 1971 was first seen on an Irish national television show called 'Newsbeat', purporting to detail the life of imaginary author Margaret Kildysart from Loughrea, winner of the Irish Independent award for Tallest Lady Novelist of 1913.
'Margaret Kildysart, the Forgotten Lady Novelist of Loughrea' was so convincing, the 15 minute spoof documentary led to a proposal for Loughrea town council to erect a memorial plaque in her honour.
The documentary was created by director John Kelleher and presenter Cathal O'Shannon.
Alistair Laidlaw, the stammering academic, was played by Michael Deeny. He wrote the poem in which Margaret Kildysart appeals to the 19th century Irish leader Parnell to give up his affair with Kitty O'Shea - an affair which did much to wreck Ireland's prospects of gaining its own parliament.
