ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR occurs because the web browser can’t verify a website’s SSL certificate. Therefore, this error message appears, warning users that the site is not secure.
This error might be caused by an issue with the website server or your device. To troubleshoot ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR, try the following methods:
📌 Reset the System Time - Windows
Some SSL certificates rely on local system time for verification. Fix your computer time and date manually or by syncing it.
📌 Clear Browsing Cookies and Cache - Google Chrome
Deleting browsing cookies and cache might solve the error. After clearing the browsing data, revisit the site to check if the issue persists.
📌 Flush the DNS Cache
Your system might store corrupted or outdated DNS cache records. Solve it by using flush DNS command. The command for Windows is the same across all OS versions, but macOS requires different command for different versions.
Here are the specific commands for each of macOS versions:
👉 macOS 11 Big Sur or 12 Monterey:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
👉 macOS 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, 10.14 Mojave, or 10.15 Catalina:
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
👉 macOS 10.10 Yosemite:
sudo discoveryutil udnsflushcaches
👉 macOS 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion, or 10.9 Mavericks:
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
👉 macOS 10.6 Snow Leopard:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
👉 macOS 10.5 Leopard:
sudo lookupd -flushcache
📌 Clear SSL State - Windows
On Windows, go to Control Panel → Network and internet → Internet Options. Inside the Internet Properties window, click on the Clear SSL state button under the Content tab.
📌 Delete SSL Certificate - macOS
On macOS, go to Utilities → Applications → Keychain Access. Then, select the SSL certificate you want to remove. Remember to proceed with caution.
📌 Temporarily Disable Antivirus
Several antivirus programs might interfere with SSL connections, so temporarily disabling your antivirus might fix the error.
📌 Modify the Hosts File - Windows
Your Hosts file is in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. Open it using Notepad, and add IP addresses followed by the corresponding domain names at the bottom line of the file.
📌 Disable or Enable VPN
Using a VPN may solve the SSL connection error. However, in several cases, disabling it can also fix the error.
📌 Enable QUIC Protocol - Google Chrome
In Google Chrome, enter chrome://flags into the address bar. Next, find Experimental QUIC protocol, select Enabled, and relaunch Chrome.

Hey there!
It sounds like there are some old cache saved on your network (internet modem/router). In that case, try restarting your internet modem/router. If that does not help, message us at support@hostinger.com, and we'll see where is the problem 👀

@@SRF-vm3fy My answer maybe kind of funny but believe it or not I solved it with changing my location

It’s working when I enable VPN which means internet service provider blocked the website .. what to do in this case ?
Hello 👋
In such a case, we'd recommend trying rebooting your internet modem/router, if that does not help - try contacting your internet provider to clarify if everything is all right from their side 👀
@@HostingerAcademy Thank you for your response. I tried rebooting the modem and it worked ✅
I tried everything but nothing to do. When I use EDGE I can access the site but Google Chrome systematically blocks it. 2 weeks ago I could access it without problem. I've had friends try it and they can access it. It is nothing to understand.

Nothing Worked , I deleted the website remaking it.. Just 1 question Why does it happen how can we revent it from happning?
Hello there!
In most cases, it is happening due to the SSL installation so always make sure that the SSL is installed and active, and re-installing the SSL usually helps. However, if you're still encountering the mentioned error - drop us a message at support@hostinger.com. We'll check it out together 💜
What if every browser blocks the site? I did everything, but nothing really helped.
same does it on phone and my pc and dosent work on other accounts neither
Hey there! If you are experiencing ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR while trying to access a website and every browser is blocking the site, there could be a few potential reasons for this issue:
- The SSL certificate of the website has expired or is invalid. SSL certificates are used to encrypt data between the server and the browser. If the SSL certificate of the website has expired or is invalid, it can cause ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. In this case, there is nothing you can do as a user except to contact the website owner or administrator to renew or fix the SSL certificate.
- The website is using an outdated SSL/TLS protocol. SSL/TLS protocols are used to secure data communication between the server and the browser. If the website is using an outdated or insecure SSL/TLS protocol, it can cause ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. In this case, you can try to use a different browser or update your browser to the latest version, as newer versions of browsers may support newer SSL/TLS protocols.
- Your computer's clock is not synchronized. SSL certificates are issued with an expiration date and time, and if your computer's clock is not synchronized with the correct time, it can cause ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. In this case, you can try to synchronize your computer's clock with a reliable time server.
- Your network or ISP is blocking SSL/TLS connections. Some networks or ISPs may block SSL/TLS connections for security reasons. In this case, you can try to use a different network or VPN service to access the website.
@ö Your problem sounds similar to the one I was having. I tried providing a link to a video that might be able to help but it seems links aren't allowed in this comments section, so I'll leave you the details here. What if microsoft says ssl error but other browsers work perfectly
Hey there! If Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer display an SSL error message, but other browsers work perfectly, it's possible that the SSL certificate on the website is not installed correctly or is not compatible with Microsoft's browser 😊

thanks but not solved
Hello, Ozair!
Another tip on how to solve this issue is to do the following in order (if you're using Lifetime SSL):
※ Open your domain's DNS Zone on hPanel,
※ Remove the AAAA record for that domain/subdomain and wait ~15 minutes for DNS propagation,
※ Uninstall the already installed SSL (whether it's success or failing), wait ~5 minutes and then reinstall the SSL certificate.
If you're not using Lifetime SSL or your website is hosted on another provider, you may want to contact your SSL/hosting provider for further assistance. Rather, how about migrating it to Hostinger instead? 🥳 www.hostinger.com/website-migration

Hello @jvoidhuey3088,
I'm really sorry to hear about the frustrations you're experiencing. Dealing with tech issues can indeed be exasperating, especially when they seem to come out of nowhere.
If you're having problems accessing specific sites, it might be a browser or network issue. Try clearing your browser cache and cookies, or attempt accessing the sites with a different browser. You could also try resetting your network settings.
If the problem persists, the issue might be more complex. In such cases, it could be beneficial to reach out to tech support for the specific software you're using, or consider professional tech support. 🙏
