Original Vs. Reskinned Condenser Microphone Capsules

- This week we'll be comparing two AKG C414EB's side by side with their original brass CK12 capsules! One of these microphones has its original diaphragm, the other has been "re-skinned" which is often needed when an old condenser microphone's capsule has wear or damage. There are many opinions out there on "re-skinning" or cleaning condenser microphone capsules, so I hope this video can be a reference.

If a mic needs maintenance I say do it, I never regret a good repair.

Reskinned sounded more mellow on the acoustic? Totally opposite of what I would’ve expected

Think That I prefer the reskin on drums but definitely the original on acoustic guitar.
Guess I’m the outlier here but I prefer the reskinned one. Feels to me as though the low mids are a bit more full and it feels less like I’m hearing a recording and more like I’m in the room with the player

To me, the reskin sounded like it’s more sensitive at the extreme high and low ends and kind of soft and scooped in the middle with an overall darker tone. I don’t think either mic is better or worse, just better suited to different circumstances.
Surprised people think original sounds better. To me the re-skin sounds like the detail / 3D is back and sounding like it should again, IMO.

orig a lot better.. sweeter extended highs are what i mostly noticed..
re-skinned sounded like it had a blanket over it.
the OG def had a better all around tone imo...
Prefer the original on drums. Slightly brighter, but not harsh. The reskinned also peaks out on the drums, kinda ugly. Both sound good on the acoustic, but the reskinned has a bit too much subby stuff that would get rolled off anyway.
The reskinned capsule is clearly brighter, but you could put these up over a drum kit and match them with EQ with no problem, in my opinion.
I know this is all about the mics but that acoustic sounded just absolutely brilliant. @colepicksvintage is that an original song? Can I listen to it somewhere?
