Dyson abandons libel case against Channel 4 News over Malaysia worker investigation

  • Dyson, the home appliances giant, has abandoned its lawsuit against this programme after a two and a half year court battle.
The company sued Channel 4 and ITN, which produces Channel 4 News, for libel after our investigations team reported on appalling conditions in a factory in Malaysia - where Dyson products were being manufactured. But the case has now been discontinued - in what campaigners say is a victory for public interest journalism.
The original investigation was produced in association with Lee Sorrell Media.

That's my gut reaction too, but how can you know that any well-known brand isn't sourcing production from Asia under conditions little better than reported here?
There have been many third-world sweatshop exposé stories linked to names you might previously have trusted. Household-name brands that have been around longer than I have (and that is a *long* time) ) bear no resemblance to what they were back in the day. The branding stays the same, the company behind it might be completely different - brand sold to another company or be the same company but radically re-worked to operate in a modern globalised world.
And that's before you get on to lesser known brands.

As some random Tory said about 40 years ago, "This is the unacceptable face of capitalism".
European and American capitalists have spent the last 70 years exporting jobs and knowhow to the Far East in search of ever greater profits and destroyed local industries at home, undermining our tax bases. Sometimes, they have undermined the governance and social security of those Far Eastern countries to drive down wages even further. This is implicit in the Malaysian report. When are they going to be held to account?

I am a Malaysian. Most locals wouldn't want to do this type of job anyway. The task is too repetitive, and the pay is too low. This causes a shortage of workers; forcing these companies to hire immigrants. Many of them are illegals. This opens them to abuse by irresponsible employers. This is a known problem in Malaysia. In fact, there have been many calls for these companies to automate and move up the manufacturing value-chain. Some even want them to move elsewhere from Malaysia.

Yes after Brexit referendum, James Dyson lives in Singapore (how he evades taxes) but the factories are in Malaysia.
Now these factories were long built before James Dyson moved, and the work environment back then was much better...but since James Dyson moved, many Malaysian employees had their voices cut off, rarely any promotions or pay raise and pretty much everyone there is just learning as much as they can before quitting.
My guess is Dyson moved to using immigrant workers as they have less power in Malaysia (yes it's a sad thing in Malaysia) making the work environment more horrendous when it was already toxic.

a disgrace by Dyson but these countries that have big companies & cooperations using their people to work in horrendous conditions at times are complicit . Time for countries that have big companies & cooperations too stop them from exploiting their countries workforce so they could maximize profits .

Many Malaysian companies prefer to hire illegal immigrants due to the cost savings involved. By doing so, they can avoid paying higher wages and adhering to the labor laws mandated for Malaysian workers.

  • @blakaeg

Dyson offers fragile overpriced products that break easily. The wheels on their very expensive cordless machines just snap off!! Parts crack and break easily! Dyson outsource customer care to low cost countries like India and the customer service is absolutely shocking!!! Their repair engineers in Chippenham fail to repair products properly which leads to even more frustration. Dyson is a very corrupt company and James Dyson does not deserve the title Sir. He is a hypocrite and does not care about the people who work for him. I used to really respect James Dyson, but now I really dislike him.
