- The specialty of the Chinese Sichuan Opera is the technique of rapidly switching masks and costumes. The "face changing," a trade secret, is called "bian lian." Taped in Chengdu in June, 2009.
I stumbled upon this by accident and it is honestly just so fascinating- some people are really just so incredibly talented.

these are the techniques used in bian lian
Blowing Dust (Chinese: 吹脸)
The actor blows black dust hidden in their palm or close to his eyes, nose, or mouth so that it obscures their face.
Beard Manipulation (Chinese: 髯口功夫)
Beard colors can be changed while the beard is being manipulated, from black to grey and finally to white, expressing anger or excitement.
Pulling-down Masks (Chinese: 扯脸)
The actor can pull down a mask that has previously been hidden on top of their head, changing their face to red, green, blue, or black to express happiness, hate, anger, or sadness, respectively.
Face-dragging (Chinese: 抹脸)
The actor drags greasepaint hidden in their sideburns or eyebrows across their face to change their appearance

Some one told me I change faces faster than in Sichuan mask show ,, now I understand the meaning
At the beginning the mask's are all on at ONCE In layers, a fishing line string runs to different points but once it it pulled a rubber band tention causes each layer of mask to pull down into the area leaving maskes loosely inside the uniform, but notice how they always start with full face masks then go down to half face then a bare face reveal at end.

@@maddogdaz1 right it's an artform, having a bare face but also pre loaded maskes to the side and pull a line that causes them to fly over face... My friends dad was explaining to me how it works but he speaks Mandarin and poor English.

I think i found the secret! They have some type of string atached to their hand , that's why the face only changes when their doing movements, and i think it goes down to their belly area 2:49

Why do you feel the need to explain it / spoil it? Why can´t you just let it be a mystic part of old tradition and culture? I remeber seeing this with my family in china as a child and feeling so amazed and proud, then going on youtube to see it again to feel nostalgia, and then, without warding, having it spoiled :/
2:48 this is just a guess but if you look at his left hand, you can see the figure of his arm swipe back in his cape. My guess is that the mask is pulled with a string and hid inside the tight suit or pulled with the fastest hand.. I’m just guessing based off of the shoulder piercing on the pink part
There are many techniques to achieve this art form. Your guess is the most probable, although it could also go into the hat.
In addition some performers use grease paint or powder, which can also be used to change the colour of a beard.

I think all of the masks are put on with strings attached and they just pull on the string. The masks are made of cloth so they can go under the clothes. It must take a ton of time to get to that speed of changing masks.
Tis mad how fast they change? surelyit must get caught up if strings are involved? once in a while? also it looks so close to their face its spooky.I know that magic has been connected to occult look at old posters and they have little demons in them so what is the secret?? intresting thoughts for sure.

Probably it's only one type of Chinese opera which scares me a little bit.
I appreciate their skill and talent, but these mask scares me a little (not on puppet, but on people).
Even in india this is practiced and it is known as yakshagana but we don't change change mask lol it's like a they wear make up and perform dances and some old traditional skits whic has been passed through generation

No, look at 2:53 and you'll see it goes down into the clothing. For the parts where a mask re-appears after the performer shows his/her real face as demonstrated by the lady at 4:23, then they use the hat which interestingly is more difficult to master than the normal change
it's just several masks on top of each other and they quickly remove each layer while hiding it.
what about at 4:22 when the lady in pink had no mask on but suddenly a mask appeared in a second?
