  • Join us on an incredible 2-day jungle trek in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra! This video showcases the entire journey, from trekking through the lush rainforest, camping in the wild, to tubing down the Bohorok River.
Bukit Lawang, a small town in the north of Sumatra, is one of the few places in Indonesia where you can spot orangutans in their natural habitat. If you’re traveling to Bukit Lawang, chances are you’re here for a jungle trek in the Gunung Leuser National Park. This is the most popular spot in Sumatra for multi-day treks (including single-day options) to see orangutans, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, gibbons, and much more wildlife. Here are our top tips for Bukit Lawang!
If you're in Bukit Lawang, we highly recommend booking a jungle trek with an overnight stay. Sleeping in the jungle is an experience you'll never forget.
Day 1: The Jungle Trek Begins
After breakfast, you and two guides will head straight into Gunung Leuser National Park from your accommodation. Trekking groups usually consist of 4-6 people with two guides. While sightings of orangutans and other wildlife are not guaranteed, there's a high chance you'll encounter your first orangutan within two hours. This moment is always incredibly special.
During the trek, you'll stop several times for snacks and a delicious, hearty lunch. The first day's trek lasts between 5-8 hours, depending on your group’s pace.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at the camp. Your sleeping arrangements are basic but include everything you need: a mattress, sleeping bag, and even a pillow. Most camps also have a simple toilet. Refresh yourself in the water, and enjoy a complete rice table dinner.
In the evening, unwind with drinks, games, and possibly even some music, making for a fun and memorable night in the jungle.
Day 2: Return to Bukit Lawang in Style
The next morning, cookies and coffee await you. After a relaxed, hearty breakfast, you’ll set off for your second day in the jungle. Once again, you’ll have the chance to spot orangutans, macaques, tropical birds, gibbons, and more.
After about four hours of hiking, you’ll reach the river, where the real adventure begins. You'll float back to Bukit Lawang in style on a tube down the Bohorok River.
