ADHD + School: How I asked for Accommodations

- Don’t be shy, ask your teacher(s) for accommodations to help you have a successful school year! Either email them before the start of school or go up to them before/after class on the first day.
Schools are legally required to give you accommodations if you have an IEP or 504 Plan. I didn't have either but I still got accommodations by asking teachers/my parents asking/fighting for them. I am extremely privileged to have had parents who went to battle with teachers, the school board, and administrators to get me accommodations. I would not have done well in school without them.
If you think you have ADHD, I made a worksheet to help determine if you meet the diagnostic criteria and talk to your doctor about it!

All but one of my teachers was THRILLED I asked and were happy to accommodate! It doesn't hurt to ask!
Why was the one not happy? Are they also the 10th dentist that didn't recommend the toothpaste toothpaste?
Having ADHD, I find it better when I’m next to at least one friend so if I get confused or distracted or need something to be confirmed for me or if I don’t know what we’re supposed to be doing then I can ask the friend next to me, but it depends on the friend and also it may be different for some other people with ADHD
I perform better in the back corner of the classroom. That way all the stimulation is in front of me and I'm in my safe little corner.
Just wanted to share, so people that have trouble sitting in the front know there are other possibilities :)
I thought I was the only one. Thanks for sharing. I always sit in back by door. Helps my anxiety too
That time I didn't have my book in class and my teacher just wordlessly handed me his when he gave out assignments 🥺
Thats so nice of him
I had one class where everyone misbehaved. The teacher moved me to upfront center “as inspiration” for her that there are good kids out there after all.
Sounds great except then I couldn’t doodle in class anymore like when I was in the back!
I feel you, I was always the example kid but loved to either draw or read in class because it was just too much or too little but I couldn't
Hahaha this was me too. Small town school and all the teachers knew I was "teachers kid" as my mom taught two towns over. It was a curse at times ha.
fact: it's still hard to concentrate even when sitting in front of course
This is what I used to do before I even knew I had ADHD! Everyone thought I was crazy, but the only way I could learn was in the front few seats.
I honestly didn't know you could get accommodations for adhd until I was out of school. Always thought they would just dismiss it
Thank you for making ADHD seen :)))
AS a teacher of 30+ years, I TOTALLY endorse this video.
Gosh I wish I understood my adhd while I was still in high school...
Oh my!! I am always asked about being in first row!! Still managed to read books during lessons. Actually reading helped me to be concentrated around the lesson.
SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS ME!!!!! this is mind-blowing
It’s so true
I love the front row… I also tend to zone out and self retract myself stuff I literally did flawlessly earlier or work ahead
I do all that and yet I still failed 😞 I don’t get it why ? I study, I do my homework, I listen in class and I can understand but when it comes to exams… I don’t know a thing 😑
Maybe have something else that came with this. I got stuck with social anxiety disorder on top of this and answers to questions still disappear out the window. Especially if said questions are unexpected😑
Agreed! I did this and it helped so much! I made the mistake of moving my current work desk next to another coworker. We both have ADHD and it's not going well lol 😆
Me in college getting to class 30 minutes early just so I could snag the center front seat willingly.
The rest of the class: moves directly to the back.
I felt awkward asking to sit in the front row because of my ADHD, so I just said my glasses prescription was outdated and needed to sit up front to see the board.
Me always siting in the back listening to music half paying attention making A's lol. Everyones like how are you so smart the answer ADHD.
I have asked, but than I make more friends now in the front row!😁
I work better by friends instead of by myself idk why but I just do so when I get put by myself I just zone or just forget I need atleast one of my friends behind me or beside me never infronr of me
Also… study 4 hours a night, exercise 5 times a week, maintain healthy relationships, and continue career advancements.
Haha that’s all I need to do? Woah… wish someone told us the secret earlier, or maybe it’s the kids with adhd who “want” to talk to their friends, and the last thing they’ll do is ask to sit further
My teacher would say that then announce it to the entire class
Being upfront caused me major anti social and instead of paying attention Idk how but I would fall in a deep sleep everyday for a month
Issue with sitting in the front row is I hear
Every.
Single.
Whisper.
Mutter.
Utter.
Giggle.
And laugh.
Because everyone is around me;-;
I didnt have to tell a teacher this. I didnt have any friends
Iasked same thing in highschool bcz of bullies but one teacher refused . He said places are attribute by alphabetic order im R so i was always inthe back. hard to follow with bullies trowing stuff on your head. Not correcting your test properly when it counts for the class papers. Ihad to be corrected by teacher everytime. The bully had the audacity to laugh about it isaid its not my fault if you dont know how to count. Atleast it was only one class . All the other teachers were comprehensiv . Its been 23 years i still have hard flash about it. So please teacher please take this seriously.❤
Just drink alcohol or smoke something before class finished highschool pretty easy like that don't remember much of it tho 😂😂😂
This is meee
And then forgot she even had a class
Kudos for trying to show solutions. Sadly this just isn’t realistic for people with adhd. Most teachers & employers don’t care. People with adhd get fired, ignored, made fun of, dismissed, and suffer. Don’t stop making this content though. Maybe it will help the neuro typical world understand.
I HATE school
Several
Cruel
Hours
Of
Our
Lives
When sitting up front doesn’t help….🫣
