A seasonal classic from David Essex. It was released on December 11th 1982, and reached number 2 in the UK singles chart. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED: FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY:
It's a winter song, but what makes it Christmas? He's singing about love lost and he's wandering around a lonely landscape. Not very Christmassy. Sort of depressing.
Brings back fond memories, my ex husband- (was great at the time😁 )got down on one knee in the snow and asked me to marry him as this was playing indoors, plus i adored David Essex the most beautiful man ever ..those eyes..😳 even now he's a stunning 70 year old.
Always reminds of the lovely departed UK radio/television presenter Terry Wogan. On his breakfast radio programme back in 1982 Terry gave this a great amount of airplay and helped it to zoom into the UK singles charts. It was his favourite. Miss him so much. God bless you Terry and rest in peace.
The nights are colder now Maybe I should close the door And anyway the snow has covered all your footsteps And I can follow you no more The fire still burns at night My memories are warm and clear But everybody knows it's hard to be alone at this time of year It was only a winter's tale Just another winter's tale And why should the world take notice Of one more love that's failed A love that could never be Though it meant a lot to you and me On a world wide scale we're just another winter's tale While I stand alone A bell is ringing far away I wonder if you hear, I wonder if you're listening I wonder where you are today Good luck, I wish you well For all that wishes may be worth I hope that love and strength Are with you for the length of your time on Earth ... Maybe it hasn't failed after all?
In memory of my mother Margaret who gave me some of the best Christmas presents I'd ever been given even though she was very poor, she gave me love and a sense of what is right and I will be never be able to repay her for those pricless gifts.
Always loved this song but am feeling melancholic looking at the beautiful sheepdog in this video knowing that it has long passed on to it`s eternal reward. :(
I remember this as a kid wandering with my mam and dad in Woolworths playing in the background, on a cold frosty day in early December in the early 1980s , and full of excitement as I was deciding whether to have an Action Man or football boots for Christmas that year.........fond memories. 🎄🎀 MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE WATCHING IN 2018 🎀🎄
For those who want to know , I chose the action man.......and my parents even got me E.T poster as an extra treat .......the excitement of being a kid at Christmas you can't beat it..🎄☺
Jessica, if you're out there. Thank you for reminding me in Germany of this song. I've had it on repeat all day since getting home. I pray our friendship was not just 'a winters tale'. Thank you for the 3 hour breakfast. Thank you for the Monschau mushrooms and the crazy castle climb. Thank you for my bus ticket. Thank you for tuna Ted & Daisy Dairy Lee. Thank you for Stalky. But most importantly thank you for allowing me to share in your German adventure. It was truly an honour. Have the best Christmas & the best life. You deserve it. 🙋⛄❄
My mom loved this song and loved David Essex himself Christmas 🎄 this year will not be the same without you mom I miss you so much 4 weeks today and you passed away love u so much xx
I remember buying this record in the early eighties when out Christmas shopping with my wife. The song still sounds great and I still have the record and, luckily my wife!
thinking of my mum this christmas 2018 who I lost and loved. my mum loved David Essex and this song makes me think of her.....beautiful song and beautiful woman xxxx😘😇❤
This song reminds me of my first wife. We were together between the ages of 14-16. We were split up when her parents got divorced and she went to Kuwait with her Mum. Then a few years later when she and I were 20 she wrote to me- they were forcing her into an arranged marriage. Luckily she got to the UK embassy and being a British National they got her to safety and back to the UK. We got married in September 1994 so they'd never be able to force her to marry anyone else and send the footage back to Kuwait. We never signed anything though. We just went to Gretna Green and filmed a ceremony. However her life was in danger and so we got her a new identity etc so they'd never be able to trace her. It was effectively the witness protection programme. We were only together for a few days but in that time- we loved a lifetime's worth.
Gorgeous David Essex love this song reminds me walking in snow and going out when he sang this on top of the pops love him so much And my dad asking what time will I be home so long ago now miss my dad too love you dad, happy,Christmas dad❤️❤️

Great song..my friend Lester gave me this song as an extra on a cassette he had done for me at the beginning of 1983..cassette has become unplayable but thanks to youtube I got back this great song and thanks for posting.
One of my all time favourite Christmas sings - along with another classic, I believe in Father Christmas . David looks like Heathcliff in this video - that coat !
Apparently David recalls this song as His Super market song. I live in margate uk. I'm led to believe he lives by me. So tempted to ring his door bell just for him to quote anything from War of the Worlds xxxx
IN LOVING MEMORY OF MARIA DUFFY who died young and tragic. who walked in on us in brailsford rd. fallow field on Xmas Day , day in 1982 , when this song was on when i had the accordion on my knee long ago in Manchester . rest in peace Maria .

It's played a bit in Ireland

It's a winter song, but what makes it Christmas? He's singing about love lost and he's wandering around a lonely landscape. Not very Christmassy. Sort of depressing.
How nice to hear a song sang so beautiful, with an ENGLISH ACCENT
For all those who suffer in their hearts by a lost Love.
Must have missed it in 1982. Or forgotten. When you see the names of the authors, you approve that it is superb.
Unusual to hear oboe in pop music. It is such a melancholic sound. Perfect in this.
The best Christmas song by a great singer
Brings back fond memories, my ex husband- (was great at the time😁 )got down on one knee in the snow and asked me to marry him as this was playing indoors, plus i adored David Essex the most beautiful man ever ..those eyes..😳 even now he's a stunning 70 year old.
This song means a lot to me! I used to listen to this on repeat every night at my foster carers! Old memories that feel like it was only last year

What a Travesty that this Beautiful song never reached Number 1 in the UK, David you rock on mate
I hope whoever is reading this...
Has an amazing, fun and enjoyable life.
David's perfect diction is lovely to listen to,and the fact that he sings this with a perfect English accent makes it sound even better. xxx
You're right - he does have perfect diction. His is the only version of I Had Dream where you could hear every word.
In memory of my mum who passed away this year. She loved David Essex and this song
Beautiful song, beautiful dog and beautiful scenery - good singer is Mr Essex ! Lovely Xmas song !
One of the Best ever Christmas songs never to reach number one in the UK.
The nights are colder now
Maybe I should close the door
And anyway the snow has covered all your footsteps
And I can follow you no more
The fire still burns at night
My memories are warm and clear
But everybody knows it's hard to be alone at this time of year
It was only a winter's tale
Just another winter's tale
And why should the world take notice
Of one more love that's failed
A love that could never be
Though it meant a lot to you and me
On a world wide scale we're just another winter's tale
While I stand alone
A bell is ringing far away
I wonder if you hear, I wonder if you're listening
I wonder where you are today
Good luck, I wish you well
For all that wishes may be worth
I hope that love and strength
Are with you for the length of your time on Earth
...
Maybe it hasn't failed after all?
