This cover is using the Keroncong style of music. Kroncong (pronounced "kronchong"; Indonesian: Keroncong, Dutch: Krontjong) is the name of a ukulele-like instrument and an Indonesian musical style typically makes use of the kroncong. A kroncong orchestra or ensemble traditionally consists of a flute, a violin, at least one, but usually a pair of kroncongs, a cello in pizzicato style, string bass in pizzicato style, and a vocalist.
Kroncong originated as an adaptation of a Portuguese musical tradition, brought by sailors to Indonesian port cities in the 16th century. One of the similarly popular pop-Keroncong style influences that you can hear is the intro/musical arrangement of Celine Dion’s song To Love You More.

This version using one of the music genre in Indonesia called 'Keroncong'. It's not quite popular because keroncong usually associated with the music of old people. And its not easy to sing in this genre because there's a certain technique to sing it. So what James here's doing (he and his friend doing the arrangement) is to bring Keroncong to be more known and popular among the youth with more fresh arrangements. So you will find in his channel a various covers done in Keroncong. Please do check more of that covers done

Great review, as usual. Actually, it is an esoteric thing. These young ones were mocking the more "serious' and the so-called more sophisticated musicians. The type of music they showed could be found in villages' or kampongs' weddings, using the Yamaha soundboard as the key instrument - sometimes it is even the ONLY instrument. Novi comes from a remote village/town that's so small you seldom can find the name on the map, up in North Sulawesi. So this setting is something dear to her......She -though- was still showing off her class - the band's or the genre's for that matter. Another motivation that i suspect from these guys was - I think- to display the provincial side of Indonesian music..... the more humble setting.....which still works and can be seen as sophisticated as well BUT only by some tasteful, sophisticated, intelligent audience, like both of you......the set of instruments is normally found in a setting for"Keroncong" - which is said to be Portuguese influenced. But of course, they adapted it ....being creative.

Just want you to know how to pronounce BACHMID. You should pronounce it like you say the name of the legendary composer Sebastian Bach. So it's Bach-Mid. Bach = bakh with silent K and deep H on the throat, like Germanish sound.

flute is often getting used to traditional Indonesian music, so I think in this video, they try to combine modern music with the traditional tools, not everything, but the flute and the drums are very iconic for us Indonesian, and the way that guy playing the ukulele is in a special way, the javanese especially in Yogyakarta they used to play ukulele with exactly the same rhythm.

This arrangement is called KERONCONG. One of traditional Indonesian music genre. Basically this type of music was brought by Portugese when they came to Indonesia hundred years ago. Then it was modified by Indonesian people. Bongo, ukulele, violin, flute, guitar are the basic instrument.
