I do like your carving video's and I did get a old timer and as I did open it up and tested it I did put on a strop and it did a job that it was made for and ido have a
Victoria Knox pocket knife and I will use the small knife for some carving
And be tween both of them together they work out pretty good I have carved a small spoon and I had used
The gouges for a spoon and just like
All other knives or tool's it needs to be sharpen and stroped but it will serve the purpose
    It's what I can afford
But all together it will cut wood

Nice job - I've been thinking about one for a first foray into spoon-carving, and I think this video will be helpful to others in my position. I'll be getting one thanks to this review.

Nice review, I have the flex cut carving jack. I would definitely buy the flex cut stropping block that has all those special angles built into it.

Hi there, thanks for the review, I’ve been um’ing and ah’ing, about getting one of these, for quite some time now, and I’ve just gone and ordered one from Heinnie Haynes.
You have helped me to realise it was the right decision.
    Cheers.

I have a new Mora hook knife and one of these carving jacks. It took a while to get the Old Timer real sharp, but I am new to sharpening hooks and gouges. The Mora was very sharp out of the box and I had it shaving sharp with a little time on the stop with Flexcut Gold compound followed by a slightly finer green compound with another strop. I used a wood dowel coated with Flexcut Gold to remove the burr from the flat side. I used the same thing on the carving jack. I am looking forward to using both.

After seeing this video i bought one from Heinne Haynes. It arrived sharp tho not as sharp as my Mora knives. After a quick strop with Solvol and wood batten it was shave sharp. Thanks for bringing to our attention in your video

I own this tool I honed all the blades very sharp very quickly I can hardly wait to be sitting around a camp site and doing a little whittling I think it'll be a fun tool to experiment with

I agree with you. I like the knife as I've got one. But I found the knife needed to be sharpened when I got it. Most of the knives I've bought need to be sharpened when I get them . So it was no big deal. I love mine.

Btw, your channel is great, good opportunity for me to brush up on my long unused carving skills and also learn something new (treating the finished products fo example, never did that) 👍🙂

My Ot20 arrived dull as a stick. When I work out a proper jig to re-shape the cutting edges to 15 degrees, I might do a video on sharpening this knife to a useful degree.
This tool, once properly tuned up, would be a well designed and superior carving tool.
Those who are complaining about the fact this knife does not have locking blades are just demonstrating their ignorance.
Schrade is totally screwing themselves over by shipping this knife to their customers in this condition. Furthermore, there is no product support at all. They should be providing sharpening/honing information like Flexcut does. The Flexcut stropping system won't work with the Shrade OT either.
If Shrade provided a stropping system for the Old Timers blades and a video of how to use it, these carving knives would sell faster than they could be made.
    *HEY SHRADE, WAKE UP!*

Does the flexcut strop not work then? as I was going to buy this then just get the flexcut strop. They want over £150for the flexcut in the UK. Can get both for about £55.

    Great Review
Using a knife of any kind #1 make sure it's sharp...a dull knife is dangerous because you tend to use excessive force!

Hey bud, I know this is an older upload, but I've been looking at these for a little bit, I can't find one anywhere for less than 28 pounds. Still not bad, but if I can find it cheaper then bonus. Firstly where did you get yours from, and secondly, now you have had it while, what are your thoughts

Dylan Rees I picked mine up from Heinnie Haynes when they had a sale going. My thoughts are pretty much the same as when I made the vid, it’s not my first choice for spoons but it does work and is great if I just want to throw something in my pocket. The pluses are it’s portable and will carve out a reasonable spoon, the downsides are it can get a bit uncomfortable after if your using it for a long time and the blades (in particular the curved ones) need a bit of work out of the box.

@@WoodcraftHamster that's great, thanks dude. There is one on ebay right now, second hand. Already nearly at 20,so thinking may as well buy a new one. I do like the idea of having a tool that someone else has used before though.

Neither does any slip joint pocketknife, and seven year old kids have been using them safely for well over a thousand years. CZcams has made an entire generation of adults af raid to do something little children still do all over the world.
If you demand locking blades, you're missing out on the greatest, most influential knives in history.
Slip joints really are safe. My grandson uses the 24OT, and he's just about to turn seven. He hasn't cut himself once.
