Step 1, Get a 10 year old pro DSLR, maybe full frame, Canon 5Dmk2 or Nikon D610 and some good glass
Step 2, Learn how to use it
Step 3, If you really want to continue then sell it after a year or 2 for maybe a $100- $200 loss and upgrade to a mirrorless if you really want to or continue with DSLR
Definitely agree on the introspection aspect. I also controlled my GAS until I knew my Canon Rebel inside and out, by then I had accumulated enough knowledge to make a reasonable decision on what's next for me.
@@problemat1que Yep, learning photography as an art is like learning how to drive a sports car.
You end up a better driver if you learn in an old manual car without all the driver aids and automatic everything, even though they are useful from time to time.
If you want another video idea, I really think a "best used for £500 (or equivalent) and under" would be very useful, a lot of these cameras still weren't that cheap. Likewise a video about used DSLRs could be cool too, with that caveat that they're not in vogue as it were. If it is mostly just for stills there are some fantastic dslr and lens combos still out there
I would recommend looking on MPB or ffordes.
A canon 5dmk2 or nikon d610 are both great starting points for £400 ish, don't forget to include good lenses.
It would not be the best to advice someone to buy dslr. Just get on with it, its gonna be a fossil very2 soon. Despite the fact that many flagship DSLR image is great, really2 great. Its heavy for a hobbiest or work and the price keep getting low which is good if you wanted to buy but not good if you wanted to sell it again.
Many people stay with DSLR because thats what they have from many years ago, they build trust like a friend with their camera, theres many memory with the camera. It's build like a tank, its deliver great image, they have many line up lens. But i believe if they got a chance from a fresh start, many would be prefer to buy mirrorless.
For 500 €/$/£ one should stay of KEH, the overhead they need to charge seems to stay rather flat and not deepened on the item cost. Hence one should look for local camera stores, Facebook market place and ebay. It’s a lot easier to find good deals. In these marketplaces the price does vary a lot hence it is hard for them to do recommendations. Just for example on my local market place I can buy a Canon eos R for 1000$ while KEH sells it for 1300$ this pattern exists even in lower price brackets 25% difference on X-T2
@@yoginwidhi6676 Plus FF decent second hand dslr cameras, with reasonable shutter count, aren't that cheap actually. Prices in UK are bit ridicules lately.

But for me, learning the basics of photography is better served by a more basic camera, all be it a good one.
Getting second hand also means that if you find that the art of photography isn't for you you then you wont have a big loss when you sell it on.
I have seen great cameras like the 5Dmk2 or D610 being sold with only a few thousand shots taken, you have to ask are you going to do the same with 1 or 2 thousand of cutting edge kit now.
I its better to learn to drive a manual sports car if you want to drive like a pro.
I would say the X-H1 should be on this list. Criminally underrated, ibis for under 700, weather sealing, good video, fuji handling, etc. Battery life is tough without the grip but with a few spares it's a great pick
It's also more rugged than the X-T line for those wanting to travel a lot. Slap a 16-80 on that X-H1 and we're covered.
Just bought one for $900 brand new to use professionally
I picked up an Olympus E-M5 III for ~$700 on eBay three years ago for fam/friends/travel and winter/water sports video/stills. Tried a few zooms but prefer the range of f/1.8 primes. For flexibility/backup got a second E-M5 III (~$800 refurb from Olympus). Now on a bike packing trip, for example, I'll put on a wide prime like a 24 or 35mm equiv for landscapes (lately a lot of panos with Hugin), and a f/1.8 150mm equiv for occasional wildlife that pops up. Both fit (with space for batteries, accessories, and a third lens) in a small 5L sling bag I wear on the body. Both have survived drops and crashes on a lot of adventures and captured so many priceless memories. Been on MFT for the past 7 years and love the platform. Most cameras/lenses I got were used, eBay as well as MPB/KEH. Recently wanted to test another zoom, ultimately didn't care for it and was able to return no questions asked within 14 days. MPB is great.
I bought a D7000 just about a year ago and this thing is still kicking a lot! I love this thing, it's reliable and still quite quick for most things and it has a dual-SD slot. This is SO useful and I got this thing for about 200€.

I recently just upgraded from my beloved Fuji X-T1 to the X-T2. 😊 The body is in excellent condition and it has all I need. It just makes so much fun to shoot with and in case I need fast autofocus I take my Sony A7IV. Fun fact: I once had the X-T4 but it was to bulky and not comfortable to hold, that most of the time I went outside with my old X-T1. 😂
Agree on the Panasonic S1, it has the top level EVF as well.
Panasonic GH5s is my pick if you’re filming in a studio. I started on a cellphone, Samsung Galaxy S10e, which was terrible. My first videos on my channel are lacking. Then I moved on to the Canon EOS m50, which was just too difficult in low light. I thought I had it figured out with the Olympus EM5 Mark III, but the file splitting was annoying. Finally, I’ve settled on two GH5s for my channel. The video quality is slowly getting better as I learn about filming, but the GH5s is just easy to use and a great used value at about half that of a new one.
Love my S1Rs for wedding photography. Got them for cheap and found great deals on Sigma glass!
For people interested in picking up used cameras for photography, don't be afraid to look back even further to previous generations. Affordable, high quality video capable cameras are another story, but for stills you can get some astoundingly good value from cameras originally released up to a decade ago. 2012 saw the release of the Canon 6D, which you could find now for less than $300 and is capable of producing beautiful images without many compromises in usability vs modern systems. Grab an EF 50mm 1.8 and an EF 85mm 1.8 (could probably get the pair used for another $200), and you've got everything you need for natural-light portraits for less than $500.
For mirrorless, you can get a Fuji X-T10 for maybe even just $200. It's slower to operate than newer cameras, and lower resolution than we have become accustomed to seeing, but the photos are still gorgeous and more than detailed enough for how most people share images online. Plus, it's just fun to use and so small and easy to carry around when paired with either Fuji's own f/2 or f/2.8 lenses, or some great 3rd party manual-focus lenses if you're looking for wider apertures.
Digital is always getting better, but it reached "good enough" a fair few years ago. Everything coming out in the newer bodies and lenses is just icing on the cake. Depending on your needs, less icing might actually suit you better. I know I've been immensely enjoying playing with an X-T10 this year, when I want to reach for something more casual than my R5.

Great video guys! I recently ordered a Nikon D300 from KEH. This is an upgrade for my D200, and it uses the same battery, charger and battery grip as a D700.
Thank you for doing this video, especially right before sale season. I am looking for a vlogging camera for my girlfriend and settled on the Sony ZV-1 and looked at all of the websites until I realized MPB has like-new versions for $150 less than the "sales". Saves money, good for the environment. Virtually no downsides!
When the Olympus em1iii had been out for only a few months a local photographer decieded to sell his olympus gear and move to Fuji medium format. He sold me the em1iii for 1100 dollars canadian (just over 800 US) and the 12-40 f2.8 for 400 dollars canadian (around 300 US)
I never expect to get that good of deal again. It has been great fun getting to use this higher end gear.
My two x-t3 bodies are warhorses - best camera I ever owned. And since all four lenses I have for them have built in stabilization, the no ibis factor is hardly an issue. My second one was one heck of a bargain used.
The best part about this channel is that it gives equal importance to both videography and photography as well unlike others who give more importance to videography only which is very bad.

Totally agree with Jordan on both E-M1-ii/iii and Lumix S1. I actually have the S1, bought it when it was new .. on backorder and still loving it! IQ both in still and video is phenomenal
Are there any drawbacks in picking the s1r, I heard that the focusing is worse with the extra megabyte sensor but used it's not much more if that's not true?
@@Tigerex966 I would not recommend S1r over S1 if you are a video shooter. S1 got tons of extra video features and has no crop when shooting 4K. 24MP is plenty for me for photos and has an excellent low light capabilities. Compare it on dp review's photo comparison tool.

Been really considering a Lumix S1 as a photo / video hybrid to pair with my GH6. It really is tempting, just been hoping they’d announce a MkII to see what I want to do (and hopefully drive the price down a hai s’more 😂).

I recently got myself a D700 to complement my X-T2 kit, and I've really been loving that camera to bits and is, in my opinion one of the best used deals that you can get right now (as it is very cheap, and you get access to a TON of lenses)

Okay so after watching the whole video, I think there is still a place for DSLR cameras today. Maybe not in 5/10yrs, but right now, there is still DSLR cameras being made, and even last year NIkon was still releasing F mount lenses so they're still really worth considering in my opinion.
You mentionned it, but the Nikon D700, D800 are phenomenal value, but also older pro bodies like the D3 or D3X are very affordable, and rugged pro cameras that can still output pro level pictures. Same thing on the Canon side, with the 1DX and other cameras like the 5Dmk III and mk IV, 6D mk II, those kind of camera bodies are still VERY capable, and people are throwing them away on ebay to switch to mirrorless so you get them at discounted prices even more than before
I just bought a really nice D700 but almost immediately my daughter damaged one of the pins in the CF card slot :-( In general it's a tough camera but that's it's weakness.

@@okie1630 it worked fine until the first time my daughter removed the CF card to download her photos. The first time she put it back bent a pin.
Could you tell me more about why the d700 is still a good camera? I never got into the dslrs because of the weight. I am shooting with a gx85 right now and the d700 is collecting dust..
@@christianfriedrichs beautiful colours, high ISO noise that looks a bit like film, professional buttons and menus, tough metal construction, compatibility with old classic Nikon F mount lenses.

I already have my mirrorless gear that I used most of the time, but I do still like DSLRs as a hobbyist and I still have my Nikon DSLR lenses, so I got a D200 in great condition on ebay for 60 bucks, and a D300 for 90 bucks, damn. These are great starter cameras, I have 2 nephews and one of them is already starting to get interested in photography; the D200 and D300 are way too much for him, but at some point can be his starting hobby camera.
Still great autofocus and good enough FPS. Those were the go to bodies for outside sport shooters for years for good reason. I had both bodies, too and liked them a lot. Still thinking about getting one for mostly sentimental reasons. =)
Picked up an em1ii used on ebay back in February and about a month later factory refurbs were available in the OM store for less 🙃. Haven't been back that low in subsequent sales. It's more camera than I need though and plenty fast to focus on F1 cars in the two races I've been to this year, even with the old 50-200 SLR lens I picked up for a song.
EM1 ii is an amazing value. I recently bought an A7iv which is amazing but the EM1 ii is still my favorite camera.

I bought an M6 mkii recently from Canon refurbished. $675, and there are a number of 1.4 primes available. Too bad canon isn’t bringing third party lenses to the RF system anytime soon so this seemed like a steal and much more attractive after owning full frame and only having budget consumer grade lenses. Thanks sigma for giving me more lowlight options.
Yeah being body rich but lens poor is a bad look for your photos, literally. One huge reason I stayed with APS-C, where I can afford to buy (and carry!) a very nice set of lenses.
Canon USA had the refurbished M6ii's on sale for $549 earlier in November. I snagged one, it's a steal of a deal and the lens options are great. Canon's scaring off 3rd party lenses from RF is one reason I went this way. Plenty of wonderful small lenses available in native M mount, and basically anything else you could ever want via adapter. (And for $2000-3000 less than the RF equivalent!)
@@andyfeig5896 I bought mine a month before that sale. Since most of the other EF-m cameras weren't available refurbished. Glad you got a steal of a deal. Have you tried any of the Sigma lenses yet? I'm liking the 56mm. My copy of the canon 32mm isn't wowing me so far.
@@pfmusic1636 I've got both the Canon 32mm and the Sigma 16mm and 56mm. They're all fantastic, with the 32 and 56 being the sharpest. I had the 32mm first and am still amazed that on many shots I can zoom in to 100% and have almost no loss in sharpness and contrast at the point of focus.

E-M1 16MP ~$200, E-M1 II ~$450., Canon 5D less than $200. 5D II ~$250. I picked up a very low mileage E-M1 II for $425. from MAP Camera on ebay. Some great deals out there.
Fujifilm X-H1 is also majorly overlooked, absolute killer prices for a *then top of the line Fujifilm mirrorless system with IBIS, full weather sealing and one of the most astoundingly quiet shutters I've ever heard.
I know you skipped DSLR's, but if you're just shooting stills, the Nikon F mount catalog, and a used D850 provide incredible value. By the time you have exhausted that camera, the E, R, and Z mounts will have a lot more affordable used options.
Yup. For my needs, the D850 is perfect. My father has a Z9, which obviously has superior autofocus, but besides that, the quality of the photos is identical.
I've seen a couple of used Canon 1dx mark ii for about $1000. Must be great value.
850 is bit too expensive here in UK. If I would consider Nikon FF dslr I would have probably go with D750(780 way to expensive second hand).
@@kamilpotato3764 I would suggest the D800 or D810, depending on your budget. The sensor in those cameras really holds up and you are getting the same build as the D850. The only downside is the AF of the D800, which isn't the best.

Thanks guys! I own a S1 and got a used X-T3 at 500 USD. Both are a crazy amount of bang-for-buck, although the Lumix S line doesn't have much used glass, so the cost increases investing into the system. I would say one of the most underrated cameras available used at the moment is the Panasonic Lumix S5. It's an absolutely incredible camera going for somewhere close to 600-700 USD, and has beautiful video functionality and quite good stills capabilities too
Where are you finding the S5 that cheap? I’m only seeing it at around $1200
@@shanemitchellspencer In India, in the used market (OLX/Facebook marketplace). To be fair, on an average it gets close to 800-900 USD for body only, but I saw one deal at close to 650 USD for a slightly beat-down body only
A year ago I bought used Panasonic Lumix GH5 with 5 batteries and V-log preinstalled. I use it for landscape photography when cycling in the mountains and making some YT videos. It is already 5 years old but it still amazes me how capable it is.
Just bought a D810 for a steal at KEH. Only 3900 actuations. Literally a new camera.
The Panasonic GH5 is now getting affordable as well. It is great for video and has image stabilization for video and photos. The Auto Focus is so so with the firmware updates but it does force you to get good at manual focus which is a nice skill to have.
Got myself a Z6 gen1 for around 850€ earlier this year and man I'm thoroughly happy as a stills shooter. Even the A7 III still goes for well above that usually where I live and the only sign of "damage" on my Nikon is a very small beauty mark dent on the underside of the body/LCD that's honestly more of a few-millimeter paint scratch (but still made it "well used" on MPB despite the otherwise like new-exterior, function & shutter count).
I got my nearly new Sony A7iii for a little under $1000 and I think it is the best purchase ever.
Honestly I was expecting something on the much lower price range than the ones you guys mentioned here, like below $500. I started picking up dedicated camera buying used, and still doing so to this day(D300 --> X-T1 --> OM5 --> X100S). These 'long forgotten cameras' over so much better value since their price point are much lower, and with enough patience, you could get a huge bargain like I did with my X100S($128). I wish you guys could make another video with this in mind. I believe others will also like it, especially for first time users who want to try out dedicated camera on a super tight budget.
You can get a used X-T2 in that range, or a Lumix GX85. In Full Frame you can get a 5D Mark III in the ballpark. Lenses will definitely push any camera above 500 USD range though :)

I got my son a Samsung Digimax S500 on ebay for $8. Even in the the original box. That 5.1MP of pure beautiful jpegs and... it has a CD packed full of software!

Love the idea with the Z7. Got one too and all in all a really good body. The firmware has brought it along way, too. Have a 24-70 F4 on it mostly, mainly due to size, making it a great "bread and butter" combination. The F mount Sigma 50mm F1,4 and Nikon 70-200 F4 round it out nicely for me. I invested in memory cards, bags, flashes, batteries and mostly workshops. The latest one with Dan Hecho. That has been the greatest experience. Works for me. =)
I’d go for the Olympus e-m1 mark ii...$500 all day. I own one and love it!
still rocking a D800e with my og Z6; part of me misses when I sold all my m43 gear when i downsized. The em1 mark ii was bar none that camera I wasn't afraid to shoot in the jungles of Vietnam to the snowy mountainsides of the rockys
I do think it is a mistake to ignore DSLR's for photography. Something like the D800 or D810 (Depending on your budget) are still great cameras and the 36mp sensor still holds up for portrait and landscape photography. Lenses are plentiful and generally not that expensive compared to the mirrorless option. Yes, you don't get eye af but that really is just a very good bonus for photography.
esp when they say they are going mirrorless because of 'new lenses' coming out. Why not used also? They also said it was about the experience :shrug:
DSLRs are dead. A hard truth for some. DPReview cannot in good conscience recommend a line of camera that they know will not be around much longer.
Someone talking about Olympus cameras? Wow!! I love my 2 EM1 ii cameras and the pro zooms are fantastic in image quality.
In my humble opinion, most digital cameras have been good for over a decade at this point. Granted I’m certainly not a pro photographer but I’m using the original Canon 5d which I picked up used for £230 and it’s still putting out amazing pictures that I love. Even the 5d is pricey compared to some of my favourites. I hope people just getting started don’t feel that they need to spend thousands, or even hundreds to give photography a go :)

Frankly, when I saw title of the video, I was not really thinking about all that modern €$700+ cameras, rather some classic you can get for _used_ camera price.
I've won provincial and national photography awards with a Canon T4i. Composition, correct exposure and emotion are what makes a photograph compelling not technology.
Fully agree with you. Currently, the 5D mark II is available from MPB for between £174-£374. Many advantages over the original 5D - 21Mp, 3" screen, higher top ISO, auto ISO, water resistant and larger battery capacity to name a few. A no brainer for a full frame camera that still compares well with today's offerings for a fraction of the price.

I really love the Canon M200 as an extremely small, compact and capable "point and shoot" style camera, which still has all the options you might need sometimes, and for a ridiculously low price you can find the M100, which is almost as good.
I found the Canon 1DS Mark 3 for $750 bucks on KEH. I am pretty sure that is still a very capable photo camera and built like a tank.
Olympus em1 mark 2 for 500$. Simply the best choice.
Crazy capable camera. Not the best low light choice for moving subjects but excellent for everything else.

After watching your channel for years, I was Fuji, Canon, and Sony curious. I picked up a XT30, 5D III, and A7 III in a used buying frenzy. I have to say each has their pro's and con's and it really depends on the situation. I have to say the 5D is the most enjoyable. At the end however, the champ is my Pixel 6. Go figure.
5DIII is a very utilitarian pick. Great camera but never vibed with mine too well, personally

Still love my X-S10 for combo duties: some photo, some video. With the XF 18mm 1.4 R WR and a lovely old Pentax-M 50mm 1.4 (w/adapter)... delicious stuff.

I actually just bought a panasonic s1 for 1500 off KEH and I have to say it really is an amazing video camera ESPECIALLY for the price!
But even moreso I love it as a photo camera too! The only downside I have, and I mean only, is the slow burst rate. It’s an incredibly competent and underrated photo camera

I was just about to mention the G9! I say all of the following as someone who went full frame (Nikon Z5) for a year and felt wanting for what I used to have on MFT in spite of the image quality. I actually got a second hand one with the 12-60 Leica and spare batteries for 830 Eruos. I used to shoot with a G85 in the worst lighting conditions possible (underground music) but even with it's objectively noisier images, the grain often added to the character of the space than took away. The G9 with it's post-2020 AF and video capabilities was just an amazing option, plus all the kickass small lenses like the Oly 45mm, which I am in love with right now.
@@W3IYAN I agree! Out of all my cameras I keep going back to the G9. Panasonic just nailed it with that one. And it's so cheap now. I just wish I would have got it first rather than haphazardly going through different bodies & systems

@@JoeMaranophotography It's great for stills, really fast and accurate. Video AF is lacking, but I only use manual focus for video anyway so it's not an issue for me.

I've just bought the current mk2 version of the OM 12-40 f2.8 in 9+ condition for 60% of the new price
The A7r2 is a fantastic option for those on more of a budget. They're going for half the price of the A7r3. If you don't need the AF updates, then you get the same level of visual performance for a steal of a price. I picked up a used copy for $750 just last week.
The Lumix S1/R is very good for what I use it for (documentary, weddings, landscape). The EVF is great, the cameras are very robust and the weather sealing is excellent (especially for stormy sea images and hours in heavy rain. The AF has got better over time and it's reliable in low light. The focus clutch on the S pro lenses is great for when you need to switch to manual focus (mainly in high or very low contrast situations). There is a lot of great features in the camera, which makes it easily customisable alongside the excellent ergonomics. My only real gripes are battery life, weight, slow continuous shooting speed, poor continuous AF tracking at close distances and that Panasonic seem pretty slow in updating / expanding the system.
Everyone forgets about the xh1. It used to fujifilm's flagship , it has ibis and used it's less expensive than the xs10
Super rugged weather sealed work horse. I agree, amazing used value. Probably the last time in my lifetime I got to pick up a camera for 25% of its intro price only one year after release. Who cares about outdated autofocus if two camera generations from now I'll use it for my manual focus lenses? I'll continue to make great 24 MP images and 4k video.
Great call-out for the Canon M6ii! It's a wonderful and underrated camera body. Watch for refurbished deals from Canon USA - I snagged one for $549 in early November. Hopefully that comes back again soon!!
And guess what? Even if Canon doesn't release another M body or lens, this will still be meeting most people's photo needs in a decade and you can get nearly any lens you could ever want through the EF adapter! 😎
Thanks for video, great as always. I would however rather pick a prograde dslr with fully developed and lower in price lens mount than mirrorless camera which most likely won't have any more lenses developed for it specifically anyways
Just traded up to a Sony a6400 for better low light, better color depth, and AMAZING autofocus tracking for sports and wildlife. So far I am very impressed with the results and added the Sony 70-350mm lens to do a little birding. A pretty amazing camera at a fair used price. The lens system is really deep for these APSC cameras now.
APS-C is plenty good enough for most of us, you made a good decision. Third party AF lenses make the crop E mount worthwhile. Glad to see them finally arrive also for Fuji X mount.
If someone is not already set up for large sensor 4K, I can heartily recommend the GH4 / GH5 cameras. now that the GH6 has shipped, the market is flooded with tons of VERY capable 4K cameras that have proven themselves to be absolute workhorses.
Before you plonk your cash down for a mirrorless body, take a good, long look at a Canon 5D Mark III and a Nikon D810. Those cameras are legendary as far as I am concerned, and using Magic Lantern on a 5DIII gives you one of the best hybrid cameras money cannot hardly buy in 2022. Otherwise, I *really* like the recommendation of a Panasonic S1 for video where autofocus is not a critical component of the equation.
I got a used panasonic G9 a couple of months ago with great IBIS, 10bit Video (even without the payed v-log upgrade), linear focus (with some lenses - good for follow focus), much improved autofocus over the years etc. for 550€ - great camera - in combination with some prime lenses (15mm 1,7 - 25mm 1,4 - 43,5mm 1,7) nice bokeh and not so bad in low light as one might think.
On B&H’s used section recently I was able to find multiple Panasonic S1H’s with 24-105/F4 lenses for the same cost of a new S1H.
Also not a used deal but the S5 is constantly shifting in price. It usually settles around $1900 but over seen it go as low as $1400 in recent months multiple times.
For cyclists and others who need a pocketable compact, I have had a Canon G7X for a few years and also recently bought a Sony RX100 Mk3. The G7x handles better if I am snapping while riding, but the Sony has a built in viewfinder and the screen tilts both up and down. Both shoot RAW, have many DSLR like features and can be had used for $300ish USD.
I just traded in my E-M 5ii for the E-M 1ii, I loved the 5ii, but wanted an upgrade that wasn't going to break the bank. Looking forward to getting the E-M 1ii and using it out on my photo-hikes!
I bought a like-new Panasonic S1R for $1750. Less than half the new price. Lots of good buys in L-mount.

For first-time shooters (and even those with more experience) looking for something capable and flexible, I absolutely recommend a used Sony a6500. Has internal stabilization, uses the same e-mount system as the rest of the Sony lineup, has a lot of options and customization, etc, etc, etc. The only issue is that it uses the older battery style which doesn't last as long, but that's not a big deal. I use one as my back-up, macro, and travel camera, and I just got a dive case for it too so I can take it SCUBA diving and snorkeling.
You can also get used regular Sony A7III for a good price. Not everyone need the massive files the A7IIIr makes.
I'm in the UK and at the start of the year I bought a Sony A7R IV for £2100 from my local camera store. Full retail at the time was about £3500. MPB used circa £2400 to £2500.

The 5D Classic was best deal for me wanting my first full frame camera. The I picked up is in like new condition for less than $400. It also works with EF lenses I already owned.
Even beat up 5D Mark IIIs could be had for around that much. Older canons are overlooked.
E-M1II ..i still use it next to the OM-1 (another level up) and the E-M1X (a wildlife beast) .

One of my best deals for a used camera, was the one I bought before Covid. Namely the Panasonic Lumix GX-1. "only" 16MP, but I bought it to replace my 1/1.7" performance compact camera and as an alternative to my DSLR's when I go out. It is a wonderful gem of a camera with excellent IQ. Not for video I will attest, but I shoot stills and not video. Price? A mere £95 (UK). I have since trawled the websites and I now have a small selection of lenses for it, most pre-owned, along with a pair of a adapters to use my Nikon-F and Pentax-K mount lenses shoudl I want to. But my mostly used selection are the 17mm, 25mm, 45mm and 30mm Macro ones,. Total cost? Less than the Canon M Chris mentioned. The GX-1 is just a great little camera that still produces amazing images.
Even though I switched to Sony mirrorless from Nikon mirrorless. I was truly impressed by the Nikon z5 for an entry to full frame if you want to use your older f-mount lenses. Solid camera. But if I were to recommend a used Sony full frame camera just for photos. The A9 used for around $1700 is a steal. Pair it up with the Sony 135 f1.8 GM you will have an outstanding portrait camera and sports camera hands down

@@mattaldrich7660 yep I been extremely happy with the switch to Sony. So many great lenses to choose from from all the lens makers. I have the a7riv, A7iv, and the A9. And the A9 still focuses faster and is my old faithful.
I actually went with the Z5 a year ago because of my previous F-mount FF lens collection and I haven't regretted it yet. Sure, it's not ideal for sports / action or video (to say the least), but used it can be gotten for a song and a dance and if you're more of a landscape / architecture / portrait shooter transitioning from a Nikon DSLR to mirrorless, the FTZ adapter works surprisingly well with AF-S lenses or even AF-D if you don't mind focusing manually. (Depends on the lens - some AF-D lenses have shittily short focus throws where you will have a bad time, but others like the 180/f2.8 work superbly.)
The excellent native 24-70/f4 "kit lens" (hah... as if!) for it can be gotten used for very agreeable prices as well from people who have discarded it from their initial Z6/Z7 kits, and the 40/f2 or the upcoming 26/f2.8 make it a pretty compelling option for a more compact street photography setup as well.
Again - horses for courses, and my main reason for the Z5 was because I simply don't want to change my whole system. If I started out with Canon / Sony / Fuji many, many years back, I wouldn't recommend it... but at this point if you are long time Nikon shooter on a budget, the Z5 seems like a nobrainer to me. (The fact that it takes two cheap SD cards seems significant as well, compared to pricier XQD stuff of the Z6/Z7 line as well.)
I think many of the 1 gen 1-inch-sensor cameras are pretty nice options on the used market. Canon G7X mk1, Sony RX100 mk1 etc.. And for the fun of it and maybe bringing back the inspiration if you kind of lost it in the along the way in your photography, try the older digicams like Canon Powershot Ixus 400, 750 and the S series like s95, and others can be had for very little money.

I got xt2 and I don't see xt3 as any update to my model. Will skip xt3, xt4 and but next year xt5.
@@kamilpotato3764 The video spec has improved between XT2 and XT3, with the 10 bit giving a decent boost in post production. But if your work is more photography oriented, you can easily wait for the X-T5. X-T2 is a fantastic camera in its own right :)
They were 800$ year and half ago new,so not sure what you called low? Be aware that used market also increased the prices as new cameras also went by some 15-20% in the time XT-3 was released. Now days you paying used camera at the same price as during stock clearance.
@@eagleeyephoto8715 That's true. 750 is a bit much, but I got mine at 500 USD, a little beat-down but working perfectly. The X-T3 still holds its own against any of the Fuji 26 MP options, so that's a pretty decent price :)
If you're primarily doing photography one of the best-used cameras you can get is the original Sony a9. I purchased two in the last year from eBay both in mint condition both with less than 300 shutter count and both came with the battery grip and I only paid around $1,800 for each. This camera was so ahead of its time with the full-frame STACKED sensor that nothing really compares to it for the price. This camera was literally made for the Olympics so you know they put in a ton of tech. No blackout when shooting, it gives you super-high shutter speed options (so you can ditch ND filters for photography) and the autofocus is crazy amazing. If you pair it up with a used Tamron 28-75 2.8 which goes around $ 550 used it's literally one of the best combo deals out there. In a pinch, if you need video while not giving you log or high-bit color options you can still shoot up to 4k30 and 1080p120 and it looks really good if you know how to properly expose.
The camera that proved mirrorless could beat DSLR
I have a D850, Z6ii, D610 and a D3s. I use the D3s a lot. Like a lot a lot. I love the photos off the D3s. Especially portraits, call me crazy but I prefer the look of them over either of the other 2 nikons. And it's blazing fast for keeping up with kids and pets. Used they are no more than 600$. That would be my pick purely for photos.
The Fuji X-T2 and X-T3 are both absolute steals right now. Surprised that they weren't mentioned.
I shot a D610 for years but upgrade to the Z6ii. However lately I’ve been missing the optical viewfinder so I just picked up a mint D600 for about $300.
I can’t help but thinking, the D600/610 paired with a 50mm 1.8 is so cheap these days that it seems like it’s probably the best way into photography for under $500. Of course, you have to have zero need for video.

Had a D600 for years and liked it a lot. Only the AF was a bit on the week side. Still, it was good enough even for some slower sport. Good call mate!
This might be controversial, but also look at used camera with certain flaws that you either don't care or can fix. I bought a flawed Canon 6D for $150 Canadian. The flaws are the back screen is cracked (still works), video button is broken, and the mode dial is stuck and wont' turn.
Cracked screen, just put a screen protector glass on top.
Video button broken, I don't do video. This doesn't work for everyone, but works for me.
Mode dial stuck, this is because the mode dial label is just a loose piece of paper and it often comes off. And people would try to glue that paper back on the dial, which results in the glue jamming/sticking the turn. What I did was rip off the mode dial paper, and pull out all the glue that was jamming the central axis. Then I taped the mode dial paper back on. It turns and works again.
The Olympus (branded) OM-D E-M5 Mk III is a great, compact, mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera on closeout from OM System to make room for the OM-5 for only $900.00 - $300.00 off. I recently got one and with a compact medium wide angle to short telephoto zoom it's become my super small go with me all the time camera.
Couldn't agree more with these choices. The M6 II is the smallest and lightest for what it is. It's an absolutely cracking camera in a tiny tiny body, but still manages to have excellent controls etc. Absolutely overlooked compared to a lot of things out there. The X-T3 is a fabulous camera that really did everything well. The S1 is fantastic (but worth mentioning that Log is a paid upgrade, so worth getting one with it preinstalled). Not only does it have that great video spec, but it also got an excellent heavy duty body that puts most others to shame, has a better EVF than most as well. The A7R III is a good buy and the Sony system is by far the most extensive.

You can pick up a used Olympus EM1 Mark III, and shoot 100 frames per second in raw. Then you can erase 99 of them after you pick out the "decisive moment." Video smideo.
no matter which used digital camera we go for, even if it's in perfect working condition -- bod-wise that is mostly -- we just have to make sure its image sensor is still working right and it's not burnt, especially in the middle, which is what happens to digital ICML / video cameras that are aimed at capturing sunrise / sunset shots a lot, still or video ... same with digital video cameras that have taken shots with the midday sun included in the view for long minutes ...(SLR still film / movie cameras don't have that problem ...)
I'd say G9 sometimes has $999 with lense deal and that massacres all other options except Z6/S1. It's a great camera both for photo and video, and no external recording/XQD cards are required.
X-T3 sometimes sell $999 brand new... I don't save $30 and go for used.
A G9 or a M1X and a GH5 for creative video. A New M1x are at 1500$ or 800-900$ used. If you don’t like carrying heavy glass MFT is a good option.
