    That was supposed to be a private joke in their circle and I think Matt wasn’t at all disgusted or offended. He was just genuinely surprised and afraid (I think) for Dom because he knows this is exactly what will happen. I don’t think Dom meant harm or offence to other people, but then they were live and a lot of viewers took offence on that. I say Matt is sensitive to their viewers as well as Dom as they issued an apology to the people whom they unintentionally offended. Love lots, people!

    Here in the uk we tend to use that word towards our friends in a joking manner. You can tell by the way he said it that there was no malicious intent. It was straight up joking with a friend unaware of the camera. He has apologised for it and Matthew was right in every way to react the way he did because he knew that some people would be very hurt and dom would be too by the out fall.

    • @pcrassen4975
      @pcrassen4975 Před 5 lety +22

      And also funnily enough the most people who outraged over it were straight people. It was very obviously not in any malicious intent whatsoever, hell I've heard gay people use it that way before. But Matt's reaction was reasonable, he knew that the outfall needed to be averted as quick as possible.

    • @kaicluster6783
      @kaicluster6783 Před 4 lety +13

      I am gay and I was not offended by it at all.
      I can also confirm what P Crassen said.
      For some reason straight people tend to fight the not needed fight.
      And talking from experience I can say, that the majority of those straight individuals are just failures at life and seek some kind of self-importance through being pro-active in some kind of a social movement to increase their personal value. (Plus, if they defend others, they subconceously feel stronger than the people they think they are protecting).
      To mr. K, being homophobic is not funny. But being unable to understand the difference between ill-intention talk and friend-talk is.
      When friends call each other "bitch", "'ho", "nigga", ect. they aren't using the words in a derogatory way because the word isn't used as an insult but rather to say hello to a friend.
      It goes without saying that for them those words are not negative.
      Words themselves don't show discrimination. The intentions behind using them do.
      If you intend to fight, at least fight reasonably.

    Look, I'm gay and I can perfectly understand why people would get upset or hurt or offended by this but he WAS just joking. I think that a lot of people are overreacting and that this was a simple mistake that we probably all have made. I believe that Dom didn't intentionally mean to hurt anyone and that he shouldn't get backlash from stupidity like this. Dom and Matt are very close and Dom was just being chill and his usual self, Matt's reaction was honestly normal and even he was laughing. I understand that Matt may portray a gay character on the show but he is straight in real life and this was simply just some best friends fooling around. Honestly, I don't understand why people are making such a big deal out of this when men all around the world are doing stupid shit together at the exact same time. I get it, he's a celeb and he should act sympathetic since Alec is gay but you can't expect an actor to change their entire life and personality just because he is under a spotlight all the time. Plus, he didn't even know that Matt was doing a live stream at the time, so he was just trying to act normal and be chill with his "parabatai".

      And I mean I'm straight, but I have heard gay people jokingly throw the word around, a bi guy in our friend group does it as well, and because of that we've adopted it as an inside joke, much like Dom and Matt were doing it here, it just happened to be at an inappropriate time. (Obviously we dont yell it around in public and such either). Its literally hilarious though that the most offended people at this, are straight people lol.

I also appreciated the way Matt handled the situation. I know this is no excuse but everyone can tell that Dom was joking and didn’t mean any harm. I think he just unconsciously chose that word, possibly from hearing it in his childhood? You can see the anguish on Matt's face; which is why I think this didn't go over as bad as it could have.

    Hi, so I know this whole thing is probably over by now but I just watched this video... I find it funny how people are going on about this and calling Dom names..... Yes what he said was wrong, but it does not mean it gives you the right to call him names... I'm not saying what he said was right I know from experience that the wrong words at the wrong time can hurt someone, but it doesn't make any of you better than he was when he said that. How would you all feel if you apologized for something you said wrong and people keep coming at your throat for it? If you want to start getting people to stop saying things like that, you can start with schools, because school is where the most horrible names are used. Dom at least said he was sorry. That alone should count for something. If people who called me names apologized I would forgive them they said sorry and that counts.... I understand that you can't take words back but you can try and make up for it.... Think about it, you wouldn't even know it was Dom if he didn't apologize live for it. You would never have know it was him... Am I right? So there is something for everyone to think about. If you don't agree with me, it's fine. It's your life I won't judge you.
    Thank you all and I hope you have a good day.

    What an amazing jerk this guy is. Dominic Sherwood was on a show that headlines a gay couple and has a huge gay fan-base. How many lies is he willing to tell in an apology for spontaneous comments that were clearly vile but got caught for? People that support this sort of thing and say he didn't really mean it are sad and clearly haven't felt the horrible consequences of hate speech. Perhaps it's even worse because he wasn't even aware of what despicable behavior he was committing.
    It's all fun and games to people until someone gets beaten or killed because of this casual homophobia.

    In my opinion in our world today people use that word too much and we’re I go to school i here it on a daily basis and from hearing it so much I’ve gotten use to it and I feel like that is really bad that people use that word as a insult and others just laugh at it it makes me so mad like I have friends family and I myself that is lgbtq and if anyone were to say that to my face I would not laugh I would tell them to say sorry to that person because I know how it feel for people to say hurtful words to me I don’t want to leave behind a world we’re people get joy out of calling people that are different slurs.

    • @pcrassen4975
      @pcrassen4975 Před 5 lety

      Except Dom didnt use it as an insult. You say its bad thing that people get used to it but we people give words meaning not the other way around. In the UK people have less hang ups about slurs and using them as jokes on each other, in fact, this word isnt even derogatory in the UK at all. Its just a word. You start owning a word, it'll start losing its negative connotations, lose its power, and eventually, it'll just become another word. If people stop getting offended at everything, they will stop being offensive, and the few people who actually use it to fully offend others, will lose the joy they get from it once they realize "shit, they dont care".

    my biggest problem with people using slurs, even joking, is the fact that they very subtly change an environment and enforce the idea that it’s okay to use slurs, it’s okay to demean a minority and it’s okay to treat people as less than. a professor of mine described this sort of thing as “gateway prejudice” that promote ignorance. it’s important as a role model to not partake in this sort of thing, i appreciated his response/apology.

    Hey, what I found really mattered was that Dominic owned up to his mistake and had the guts to apologize, no excuses. I take it as a positive step towards achieving atmosphere where people are taking efforts to be sensitive. To be honest, I am not necessarily in support stance when it comes to LGBTQ. But I am against the stigma and condemnation towards it. I hope things like this sets a good foundation for what is to come in the future.

    Sadly, that particular slur has too much negativity attached to it that it’s guaranteed to offend people, even if there wasn’t any genuine malice behind it. It’s an unpopular word but used liberally and casually in everyday conversation around the world. Regarding the situation that Dominic Sherwood suddenly found himself in...the poor guy was forced to face fierce backlash as a result. Words have power...for those who allow it.

    Ask a victim of rape or the surviving family members of a hate crime if an apology if it helps them with their mental health. It doesn't mater about celebrity except that there are so many young people that will be affected by this. There are boys that will emulate this because they look at his show and think he's cool. Yes, it's ultimately damaging. Watch a video of a child being bullied at school and think this through again.
