The line of ‘when they fly your flag today, are you proud or just ashamed?’ is a line I have always struggled to reconcile with.
Being from the UK, I had always been proud to be British, but as the song was written in the aftermath of the London bombings in 2005 and in the midst of the war in Iraq, the line still haunts me to this day and I think of all the innocent people to have been killed or suffered greatly because of our country’s actions.
For that reason this song, and particularly this version, will always be hugely meaningful to me.
