    My biggest 2016 discovery was Glenfiddich 14 y.o. (I'm in USA) I got it for Christmas from my amazing wife. I was dying to try it and couldn't wait to open it at New Years eve. My wife, recognizing my impatience said to me "you going to drink it with your friend Ralfy aren't you?" She just knew. So, I took my laptop, went on CZcams, typed RALFY and thoroughly enjoyed this, probable the best whiskey I had with your 2012 Glenfiddich 12 y.o. review. Ralfy, thank you so much for your videos. You make my journey of discovering whiskey so much better. Wormest greeting from California. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

    Thank you, sir, for being a big part of guiding me through my malty journey. 2016 was the year I discovered a love of quality single malt whiskies. Although, for the life of me, I cannot understand the appeal of Laphroaig 10yr. Regardless, I hope your 2017 is everything you wish it to be. Cheers!

    • @thastump
      @thastump Před 7 lety +4

      Laphroaig 10yo is certainly unique, and I can understand why you wouldn't like the medicinal anti-septic back-of-the-fireplace type smell and taste of it. There really is nothing else quite like it.

    • @thastump
      @thastump Před 7 lety +1

      Christopher Molloy It was a comment for Rob Kopple :-)
      I know Ralfy shares my great love for Laphroaig.

    • @BravingTheOutDoors
      @BravingTheOutDoors Před 7 lety +3

      My personal smelling notes go for 4 A4 pages... and that's just the smelling notes.
      There's far more in it than just "anti-septic" but it's much like anything, personal taste and personal pre-disposition i.e, biological aptitude.
      I can absolutely understand anyone not liking it but on the other hand I think a lot of people haven't put in the work to understand it either.
      To my mind Laphroaig is primarily a smelling whisky. As a tasting whisky I'd give it a pretty low score but as a smelling whisky I've never got so many different notes as I have from Laphroaig.
      Not saying it's my favourite but certainly the one I've got the most out of.

    • @TheSoteriologist
      @TheSoteriologist Před 7 lety +3

      @Henrik Stevn Nielsen _"I know Ralfy shares my great love for Laphroaig."_
      See that's what I've suspected for a long time, but in his reviews of Lahproaig OB he doesn't let on. In fact, I could pretty much prove that he seems to have some beef with Laphroaig such that he purposely underrates their OBs. And I think, much like lovers have a particular hatred for each other when there is a breach of trust, it must have something to do with Laphroaig's marketing policies and the NAS drift. So he hates Laphroaig _because_ he loves Laphroaig. That's my guess at least.

    • @thastump
      @thastump Před 7 lety

      Soteriologe I think you may be right.
      There is definitely some shady dealings going on with NAS bottlings, to "keep up" with the demand, but giving us whisky that probably isn't quite matured yet.

    Had a dram of Ardbeg 10 year old in NYC this summer. It packs a ton of flavor, not for the beginner nor the faint of heart. The apex of the single malt family tree.

    Tonight, I got home from work and decided to pour a whisky. I have 3 bottles in my cabinet, bunnahabain 12 year, lagavulin 16 year, and ardbeg 10 year. There was only one dram left in the ardbeg, so I decided to finish it. I sat down, found a Ralfy video, and took a sip. Sure enough, the dram I was savoring was whisky of the year! Makes it all the better. 😊

    I just bought my first bottle of Ardbeg 10 yo a couple of weeks ago. I wholly agree with you. This is a magnificent whisky. Between this and the Laphroaig 10 yo, I can't seem to drink anything that isn't peated. My misses bought me a bottle of Glenlivet 18 for Christmas and I still drank the Ardbeg. Oh well, I like what I like. Keep up the videos. I thoroughly enjoy them.

    Ralfy, next time you're about to start a fire, first take a piece of newspaper, ball it up loosely and stick it up in the chimney chute. Then light the newspaper and let it burn up. Then start your fire. You won't get a room full of smoke.
    Glad to hear that you're only reviewing age statement scotch in the new year. Thanks for another great video!

    Thank you, Ralfy! I'm a Benedictine monk from Minnesota, USA. We monks have a daily practice of lectio divina (reading the divine). It is a practice of reading, savoring slowly, texts without an agenda in mind. Your vlogs remind me to savor all good things in my life. Quality over quantity, right! My second favorite whisky is the Ardbeg 10, with my overall favorite being the Ardbeg Uigeadail. Both are like drinking from the earth itself. Wonderful! One of my favorite experiences is drinking one of these great whiskys at night, on the shore of our 80 acre lake next to the monastery. I find the night air and moonlight enhances the slow, smell/taste experience. I'm looking forward to your review of Ardbeg 10. Blessings, and Happy New Year.

    My malt of the year is Ardbeg 10 year old, I drank about half from June to September then purposely left it at half full till this month just to let it relax and oxidize. Was it ever worth it! The change it made is fantastic, the pete has calmed down and some sweetness and oak has come more to the front making it really quite wonderful.
    This is something I learned from this channel, thanks Ralfy. Cheers and Merry Christmas from Canada.

    Thank you Ralfy. Just excellent. You are a great ambassador of whisky and all that is good. You never fail to provide good, decent, heartfelt commentary for us all to pause and consider. And Ardbeg 10, that's the one I ration and savour for special occasions. It's a real treat. That first nosing, just beautiful, especially if I precede it with something much simpler like Glenora Fiddlers Choice (just sharing my experience). From my island in the snowy Gulf of St Lawrence to yours in the Irish Sea, may good health and good malt find you in 2017.

    It strikes me that I've been a silent consumer of your most useful and interesting content Ralfy, rather than active as you've thanked people for. At this time of year, at the risk of gushing, I want to thank you for the extra value you've added to my life these last 9 months or so. You're causing and informing my occasional trips to Scotland, which despite taking a very lot of organisation due to disability etc. And the back catalogue of your whisky reviews is something I've found particularly useful and interesting.

    Great choice Ralfy. I remember you saying how Ardbeg 10 was pipped to the post by the Pulteney 17 last year. Completely agree with your sentiment regarding distilleries respecting their customers. There are a number of established, sometimes very popular, distilleries that take the piss. There is absolutely no need for fake colouring, chill filtration or under strength whisky in anything that purports to be premium product. The price of some spectacularly ordinary whisky is incredible. I only buy independent bottlings of certain distilleries now.

    Ralfy, this comment is NOT for you to read.
    I 100% agree with Ralfy that most commentators here are very civil, open minded, and not at all snobbish.
    Unfortunately, there are too many whisky channels sprouting complete nonsense. Ralfy is the oasis in the CZcams desert. There was one channel where I found my whisky comments being attacked with such hostility and disgusting crudeness that I had to unsubscribe.
    Another channel I tried watching, consistently gave out factually incorrect information and performed tasting reviews with such an incredible air of self-importance, it was laughable. Whenever anyone tried to correct anything or suggest a different opinion, they were shot down by mindless fans, outraged that anyone would dare to question the great all-knowing whisky god. I unsubscribed to that too.
    I find Ralfy and his vlogs to be a very humble, thoughtful, intelligent and very knowledgeable. He is never afraid to speak his mind but always polite with it. He is not afraid to laugh at himself which is a very good character trait. As well as all this, he is almost always highly entertaining and thought provoking even if I don’t reach the same conclusions as him ALL the time. He makes an excellent teacher and I have learnt so much from him. Ralfy is the best!

      I'm all for the ban on NAS stuff but also leaving out those whiskies with minute amounts of colour or chill filtered is unfortunately going to restrict Ralfy's reviews to a far narrower range and we will likely miss out on the chance to find out about some otherwise very nice drops.

    Thank you, Ralfy, very very much, for not only sticking to your guns on age statements but also expanding the effort to all whiskies!!! In a year where common sense on whisky has been noticeably in retreat (age statements dropping like flies on new releases, whisky "experts" standing on the sidelines and acting as industry apologists), you're forging ahead. In terms of availability, performance and value, Ardbeg 10 is a great choice for Malt of the Year and, hopefully, Ardbeg will take the hint and provide age statements on forthcoming releases instead of pursuing "pig in a poke" salesmanship.

Anyways, in wanting to branch out, my two purchases last week were the bunnahabhain 12 and ardbeg 10. It was after much research (including watching your 2 reviews on ardbeg 10) and only now am i watching this video and i'm glad it seems i made good choice! thank you for taking the time to do these videos and as a new subscriber, i'm excited to see what knowledge im able to gain in 2017 with your help! thank you!

    Hello Ralfy, as a years-long fan from yours, I want to thank you for the time you take to educate us in whiskys and stuff. I keep on tasting lots of the nice whiskys you are reviewing and if I am out and about to buy some new stuff, I always look carefully if you have reviewed the spirit :)
    Funny enough, the only single malt my wife is (and ever was) interested in, is Ardbeg 10. It reminds her to freshly smoked meat she and her family made in her youth.
    All the best from Austria!

    Ralfy - I am not new to whisky but I am to your channel. I'm already a solid fan of yours. I love your natural presentation skills which are warm and friendly. You present from a down to earth level despite your vast wealth of knowledge and experience.
    I'm going to buy the ardberg 10 today - the whisky exchange company depot is literally 400 metres from my house in Park Royal!
    Can't wait to learn more this year.
    Well done and huge thumbs up 👍👍

    Ralfy looks like someone who'd be fun to have a drink with at the local pub. You can start by ordering a Johnnie Walker Red and start telling Ralfy how great it is and how much better it is than single malts, then sit back and be talked at... ;)

      Haha, no dad did not. I work in a factory for a living during the summer months and it pays me just enough to afford a few whiskies alongside my living expenses for the rest of the year. My dad pays for my studies though.
      Now that I have more experience with whiskies I've decided that I'm gonna go for quality over quantity, so I'd rather get a good bottle every few months and savor it than go wild on a few cheaper ones.

    I was lucky to find a bottle of kilkerran 12 year old (#1) few weeks ago. It is a superb whisky, and my whisky of the year. As i watch your malt of the year i sipped a glenfarclas 15, i expected more of this whisky, to mutch sulphur notes in the tastes and finish. I will take your advice and take time with this one, hope it will gets beter over time. Thanks for your reviews and have a good new year, proost.

    Ardbeg 10 was my second Single Malt Scotch Whisky, after Aberlour 10, and I still have mixed feelings about it. Enjoyable? Yes, for sure! But only in right state of mind.

  • @alowishusdevadanderabercro8190

    Happy New Year Ralfy!
    So glad you're still doing the tipping for those of us who can't nearly as often as we'd like!
    Wanted to share a short tale you might find of interest.. Not long ago I was cleaning out a closet and came across a 14 yo undisturbed and virgin case of wine from a local vineyard here in Virginia US. Now I know the vino's not really on your mind much, but anyway I thought I might call over to the makers and ask a little about the vintage 'cause I was planning on opening some for the New Year shindigs. What I learned was that particular year they had been trying out some synthetic corks, and sadly all their bottlings were destroyed because these corks evidently let the wine breath too much, so it all oxidized (?..) So they invited me down for a free replacement case and do a little sampling at the winery, which was cool, but it made me think how you have said before that a lot of the distilleries are considering moving to the plastic stoppers - maybe not such a great idea, right?
    Anyhow, keep doing what you do Ralfy - we can't get enough of the good stuff either !!
    Happy 2017 = )
