So great, thank you for this episode. I am using Photo Mechanic since ages and with my current move from MacBook Pro to iPad Pro (M4) I realize there is no culling software at all. With PM's pricing also wanted to get rid of it but as you said, there is no alternative - not for me on the Mac. I tried AfterShoot and similar, but never was as satisfied as with PM. And then I found your UTbe and got my opinion confirmed. I stick to PM and my workflow which is similar to yours. I emphasize a bit more on GPS but I see, LR can cope with all external changes in Metadata, filename changes and preview. Awesome combination as soon as I know what to do - thank You for putting me back on track.

Thank you for this easy-to-understand video. As a Lr user since version 2, I can now see good reasons to try Photo Mechanic for culling.😊

Thanks for the video. I think there is one fundamental thing that is not correct here… the video states that LR gets slower when there are many photos in the catalogue. I don’t think that is correct. My experience is that browsing images in LR is not affected by the amount of photos. I guess you will need millions of photos in LR before that is an issue. I have taken and imported more than 100k photos the last 12 months and browsing is not slower due to this. LR does not really become “bloated”. But where you actually can gain is that you don’t need to generate previews for more images than you actually need and you save disk space. You also don’t need to “bother” with images in LR that is of no real value.

What if I want to cull my LR library as it is? For example, could I filter my photos to only those that I have never imported in LR or edited in LR? Do you still use folders? All my photos are in folders. Would I cull folder by folder?

A great question! You made me think for a minute.. The short answer is yes you can cull your existing library. How you do it depends on your current culling process.. Whether you use star ratings or color coding.. You could filter on those items. As to your question: Do I use folders? Yes.. I still use them on ingest. I have photo mechanic create everything on ingest.. I use the basic structure of year-month-day-event-name.
