- Today’s video is of GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 7029 Clun Castle on Vintage Trains’ first tour of 2024, “The Cathedrals Express to Salisbury”; complete with a Cathedrals Express headboard. The tour originated at Birmingham Snow Hill, steam hauled in both directions via Leamington, Banbury, Oxford, Didcot, then along the GWML to skirt Reading, and then to Basingstoke and along the old LSWR mainline to Sailsbury. The weather was very mixed, being quite cold but with sunny spells, rain showers and even snow in some places.
I started out from my local at 06:59, meeting my friends @blackcountrysteamvideos8021 and Charlie, before alighting at Leamington for a shot of 7029 accelerating up the hill from Warwick. Despite the dull conditions and concern of potential bowlage, this shot turned out very well for me. I then headed down to Banbury and Oxford, meeting @adtrainvids9569 for the trip to Basingstoke on an XC Vomiter, also meeting @harrymorris5748 once I alighted. As I arrived, Basingstoke station as in a bit of chaos with a broken down train on the mainline platform, so I had to wait an additional 20 minutes for my service to Andover. Unfortunately this also meant that the SWR service in front of 7029 was running 6 late, which meant she only really cantered through Andover as fairly low speed following a single caution aspect. At that I travelled back to Basingstoke to meet @LukeAlfordUKsteam, @harrymorris5748 and @adtrainvids9569 for a few hours in the spoons there.
After that we took the 14:48 XC service up to Reading and took a train to Goring & Streatley where we set up for 7029. She was due, rather unusually, on the fast lines from Reading, so we were expecting a fast run, and that’s exactly what we got, as she absolutely blasted through on the down fast, really pushing her 75mph limit. This shot felt very authentic, as a Castle at high speed on the GWML with such a headboard would have been a regular sight in the 1950s. I was very happy about this shot so in high spirits I headed back to Reading and took an XC train northwards to my next shot. A quick interlude on the video is a clip from my friend Luke from Hatton Bank, so a massive thanks to him! Meanwhile, I alighted at Dorridge and headed to Bentley Heath Crossing for the final shot, where 7029 powered nicely through bathed in the crossing lights. After that I headed home.
A massive thanks too all who made today possible, to my friends, XC, Chiltern, SWR, NR, Vintage Trains and the mighty 7029 and her crew. Thank you also to my secondary planner who helped choose some shots! Today was a very fun day out indeed. I hope you enjoy as much as you did!
Fab video, the old girl really flies! Love the last shot on the level crossing when she bursts into the light and then disappears again into the dark in a shower of sparks, superb...
Thank you very much and absolutely she does! I'm really glad you enjoyed the final clip. Regards, Dan
Goosebumps on that second pass
Haha thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Dan
Fantastic final shot on the level crossing
Thank you very much! Yes I did quite like the effect of the sparks and lighting. Regards, Dan
Such a beautiful girl, wonderful stack talk, and beautiful green countryside! I'm jealous. Living in Arizona, such green is hard to come by, even in our mountains. A beautiful video. Thanks for capturing it! ❤😂
Haha thank you! Certainly a very beautiful loco and the team turn her out brilliantly. I'm very glad to have a commenter all the way from Arizona! Regards, Dan
Another good video, i know how much you love these castles as you told me
Thank you very much! Yes they're lovely machines and I think what I saw proves it. Regards, Dan
Dan, Great captures and excellent coverage. It was a good job I didn't have my hi-viz on at Leamington 😂 and I was on the bridge at Bentley Heath. Regards, John
Thank you very much John, and what a pity we were with each other unknowingly! I'll have to be sure to say hello next time now I remember lol. Regards, Dan
Nicely filmed Dan. Looked the part with the headboard
Thank you very much mate. The headboard was fantastic, and made the train feel very authentic! Looking forward to our next outing. Regards, Dan
Great video, really enjoyed that high speed shot at Goring & Streatley!
seconded
Thank you both very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it and yes it really was quite spectacular. We were talking about it all the way back to Reading. Regards, Dan
Great video Dan Clun Castle is Looking good.
Thank you very much Richard, she certainly does and Tyseley turn her out immaculately! Regards, Dan
Cracking final shot at the level crossing with sparks flying - those (smuts) that are invisible during daylight. Just shows how easy it was during steam days for lineside fires to catch hold in high Summer, although there was proper trackside maintenance in those days so it didn't happen often.
Thank you very much! Yes, that is a big draw for night time shots! Now that the railways have a very centralised approach to control and maintenance, it's indeed true that it has become far easier for lineside fires to take hold. Regards, Dan
I may come to Leyland on 16th March to see the Birmingham-Bound steam there
I caught the other tour which was going to Chester behind the other steamer of 44871 and I was at Tamworth and she was absolutely roaring its way through
That's great you got to see that Scott. It's been a while since you were able to watch some steam. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043yeah indeed mate
1:15 that announcer sounds like he’s shouting to everyone to stand back
Yes indeed, I suspect some staff do that to ruin people's audio because everyone was following the rules. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043yep

Thank you very much, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! If all goes to plan I'll be out this weekend. Regards, Dan
i saw 7029 at Salisbury on the return
That's great! I hope you enjoyed that. Regards, Dan
1:13 looks like clun castle is invading the southern region
And its a shame that this loco wasn’t going flat out at Andover
That's it Scott, and yes it was a shame as it's what I'd hoped for but Goring made up for it. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043yeah Dan
Obviously, you're a mad nut for steam engines like me.
Haha you could certainly say so. I do go out for them a lot lol. Regards, Dan
Nice video 👍👍👍😎😎
Thank you 👍! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Dan
Cracking shot at LMTN and Goring. You certainly got about a bit yourself. Shame about the light at Bentley crossing though. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much!! Those were my favourites too. The lighting is always a challenge but hopefully I managed alright lol. Regards, Dan
i have an Idea for 7029.
What's that? Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 Sometime would 7029 be ona Demonstration of the New York Central.
Funny green coach at the back?
That's a class 47 diesel, I wish it wasn't there at all lol but thankfully it wasn't working. Regards, Dan
@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 and the funny thing is that Brush 4s are now more historic than many steamers, eg black fives, were at the end of steam . Eg, black five in, say 1970, 20 to 35 years old, class 47 today, 60 years old.
