I’ve went fishing 4 times this week working on my fishing kit. The only way to rely on fishing or traps is to get out and get experience with them beforehand.
Don't forget real steel jaw traps like conibears and footholds. They don't weight much but a lb or 2 and they will actually produce large meals. 2 or 3 steel traps in your bag weigh about 5lbs but they'll catch anything from squirrels to coyote. CZcams "the meat trapper"

My experience with steel fishing leaders as snares is that a rabbit can chew through a forty pound test. The clasp on the leaders weigh more than the wire which creates difficulty in finding the sweet spot on the loop for setting. It also makes the snare prone to falling by slightest touch of wind. Fishing leaders as snares can be done, but the idea of survival prep is to eliminate margin of error before it happens. Ready made snares weigh nothing and take no room in a pack.
It's a redundence is it possible to do it yess is it preferred no you can set the yoyos up in water (most practical) and on land snares are land only..

I agree two days with nothing but water in the belly and you start to feel sluggish . We don't have a lot of water ways in the mountains here that hold fish mostly just trickles of water so I lean towards traps and wild edibles more but I do carry a fishing kit in case a mountain lake is available. Having such kits greatly improves your chances of eating if lost well worth the little bit of weight that they are.
Caught many a fish from our boathouse/dock with yo-yo's. Great tools. Caveat: You can absolutely eff yourself up if you set the thing off when theres a hook on the end.
My local sporting good stores seem to have a constant supply of reduced prices on fishing lures, but besides not interested in eating fish unless I was starving, I don't know much about fishing. I often think I could be put a good kit together if I knew what I was doing. I enjoyed watching your video and would follow your advice on the items you chose for your kit.
Josh is describing setting out ways to procure food passively. Lures have to be cast and worked on the retrieve to simulate baitfish. Stick with actual bugs and worms on a mechanism with a trigger which will set the hook when the bait is taken so the fish is still there when you come back. Common freshwater fish are good eating and even better when you're hungry.
Okay... I understand what you are saying. Plastic or artificial lures don't move or behave like live critters. Good point. So I guess if anything, I should just pick up some hooks and sinkers. Like I said, they have tons of stuff marked down all the time.
Wow, my trapping/fishing kit is almost the same as yours! I carry 4 all-metal rat traps, 8 all-metal mouse traps, 4 auto-fishers, a frog gig, and the knowledge of how to make fish baskets (a small cone inside a larger cone) from local materials using paracord to assemble! For bait, I carry several packets of MRE peanut butter for the rodent traps and even fish hooks, though you need to allow the PB to dry a bit on the hook before using! Also, a small jar of power bait and small jar of marshmallows. I would advise you to exchange the attachment string for the auto-fishers with light weight metal cable as well as adding about two feet of LW cable to each of your rat and mouse traps or they will be dragged off! I don't put out traps unless I plan on staying in the same place for a few days. I place the mouse/rat traps out about 300 feet from my camp in accordance with the eight primary directions (N,E,S,W,NE,NW,SE,SW) of the compass as this makes it easier to find my traps especially at night! Be careful, trout lines are illegal in a lot of places but in a survival situation all bets are off! Thanks for the video! Subbed!

Very good information. I would suggest adding one or two DP (dog proof) raccoon traps. They are easy to set and very effective. Tons of videos are available to show the details of employing them. You can catch coons and possums in them which are good meats for survival situations.
I've used all the items in your kit except for those steel rat traps, never seen them before , love those yo yo s , I tie them to my boat when I'm out and a couple times perch actually were slammed inside the boat when caught by that clever device , trot lines catch fish while I sleep, I've also caught pheasants with steel leghold traps in a shallow pit baited with feed corn. This video brought back a lot of memories , thanks.also love that chute shelter 🎣😊
Most snares are a one-time use trap, as the target critter, in it's efforts to escape before it dies will certainly twist and kink the snare, so that it won't close smoothly and catch anything else if set again.
I tried some of the links in the description, but found no information about where to purchase the traps. Also, you seem like a very qualified person and you obviously have a lot of experience at this. When I was a kid, being French Canadian my brother and I often hunted frogs on our summer camping trips. for the frog's legs, great roasted on an open fire. A lot of people seem to be turned off by the idea of eating frogs legs, but they are really tasty. During the frog hunting summers of my youth I discovered something about the behaviour of frogs. I discovered a trick for hunting frogs that will blow your mind. The first time I tried this trick, I simply dangled a clean unabated fish hook in front of the frog's face with the hook attached to the end of my fishing line on a fishing rod. To my surprise the frog jumped instinctively at the hook and bit it hard enough to set the hook. I was really surprised, so I tried it again, and again, and again. It worked every time, the frogs just jumps at the flashy metal hook, as if it was a fly. So, from that moment on when me and my brother went hunting for frogs we always brought our fishing rods. You don't even have to hide from the frogs, as long as you don't spook them and they don't run away, you just have to dangle the clean shiny hook in front of them with your fishing rod and they will immediately jump on it and byte it. You should try it, it is insanely easy and you can save on your spears. Thanks for sharing the video. I hope this information will contribute to your ability to feed yourself.
Great video, you may look at the PDF-4's from SRO, from experience a minimum of six sets for one yield, and generally do not expect anything the first night, as familiarity plays a role. However as you point out ten, or more is even better. Also a good thing to remember is over trapping, and fishing is a thing, an area will only sustain you so long. Ten trout in a stream, and seven critters per acer will only last so long, it is easier than most relize to wipe out an area. Another role PD F-4's can play with a little imagination is man traps.

Here in WV fishing has gotten to be pretty restrictive on spring traps like the yo-yo and other devices as well. In a SHTF deal or die hungry I would do what I needed too to live. Just be careful when and where you use these devices in normal life. Josh, ever consider options for us older folks in a survival situation? I'm 67, not as spry as I use to be but still kick-in and prepping. One other question or comment, I live about 20 miles north of Charleston and have three river crossings I would have to make if I where in town and a SHTF deal, i.e., EMP or other car disabling event occurred. Just bought a 2 man inflatable boat to keep in the car as well as just plain old fishing just in case. Think that would be a viable option for others as well?
i like the yo yo fishing lines, this is the first time (on your video's) that i've ever seen them, seeing as how i like to fish far more than hunting or trapping, i've add them to my survival gear, i usually set up my fishing lines the old fashion way and i'll also use netting when fishing; course i'll still take some MREs, but when out in nature backyard, i like to do as much fishing as possible for my main food source. i like the 4 prong spear you had for fishing, again i usually spear fish the old fashion way, i have actually bow fished quit a bit, it's definitely not as easy then fishing the normal ways, but it's fun to shoot a fish with an bow & arrow; i look forward to the time where i can be out there with the group, the group look to be having a great time.
I make my snares out of fishing steel leader. I carry gear to make a trotline. I cary one of those big net laundry bags that you can use to catch fish. Carry some peanut butter for land bait.
@@stormytrails I only climb with 11mm polyester static line. My prusik cord is 8mm. Both are rated to 12kn and are CE certified. I use a riggers belt rated at 7000 lbs. Of course my carabiners are locking type rated to 12kn. I dont use a figure 8 to rappel. I prefer the French rappel method. SAPPERS CLEAR THE WAY

I just think that incorporating fishing line and wire and tinder into a paracord one should take backpacking is such a smart thing. What have you climbed? I am a dancer and they said dancers could rock climb best...ha ha ha...sure...balance, weighting knowing all the different ways to move one's body without moving another peice inadvertantly...sure. I almost made it around an overhang (6' off the ground, snickers). Lucky you, mr. John!!
@@stormytrails Being a SAPPER in the army rappeling was part of the deal. That was in '87. I hiked the AT in 2009 and saw so many remote areas that would have been cool to rappel into. So now I carry the gear to make that happen. Once you learn some basic knots it's relatively easy. I use a prusik knot to climb out of those places. If I want to climb a tree I can. The gear is somewhat heavy@ 10 lbs. extra. I would encourage more people to climb as it opens up a whole other world. I hope this helps.

Also spring set up on line that triggers on the bite?! Ileagle in some states, also store in plastic bottle put small chemlite into bottle, tie to land great for night fishing with trotline just saying great vids

Would love a video on how to prepare small game to get the most nutritional value. Also what animals are suitable for eating or perhaps more importantly wich ones aren't suitable for consumption.

I often have to go 2-3 days without eating and I can attest to just how difficult it can be. When you do eat again, your stomach is like "WTF IS THIS NONSENSE!?" and can make you puke up the food you're trying to eat heh

I like the speed hooks, I have several. I give the advantage to the yo-yo’s as they will not just set, but often also reel it in depending on the size of course

There are a lot of books on trapping.....Any you would particularly recommend? And do you recommend electronic versions over hardbound to minimize carry? Where are you on EMP?
You know, I haven’t found that one go-to trapping book yet, I like a handful of them and kind of take from each: Canterbury, Mears, and Kochanskis books include a great baseline.i tend to lean towards actual books, I am only on electronics out of necessity for business really. That leads me into the question about EMPs, I try to minimize reliance on electronics altogether so that no matter what, nothing counts in them making it through an EMP and if they do, that’s just gravy
Weight and space, plus the size of the game you are going after. “Micro-trapping” is often more fruitful and there is less processing and need for preservation. If I take a larger animal it will take me longer to process and preserve what I can’t eat right away. I think of it as having a dozen mini-burgers over the course of a day instead of a huge pot roast that I don’t have a fridge to put the leftovers in

How much does your intire pack weigh? So far it looks like it all weighs more than you would carry, unless you dont plan on returning for a long while.
There are some rules when setting traps, such as always set on sign. If you set a trap and there is no sign of an animal, you dramatically reduce any chance of a catch. Going to great lengths to create habitat like running poles or slides only adds insult to the injury of empty traps. There are plenty of real slides and running poles! Never make artificial ones. A quick walk around a pond and you'll see sign a quick walk a long a game trail and you'll see sign. Another rule is to create your set for the target animal. You aren't going to catch a coyote in a beaver set, well I won't say never but I'd never try it. Different animals eat different stuff, understanding what that stuff is can fill your traps because you'll know the bait to use for the target animal. Plenty of meat can end up in the pot by baits made right out on the trap line. Plenty of lures can be made from previously trapped animals. By doing these things 10% daily yield would be easy

I've never seen those mechanical yo-yo's/fishers before. They look sturdy and seem to have a good retraction.

I grew up not far from there, across the river in Ohio, Scioto County. I know that are well. I think a boat was a good call

To get the most out of small game and fish is to make stews out of them add things like wild onion, greens,cattails .

I often have to go 2-3 days without eating and I can attest to just how difficult it can be. When you do eat again, your stomach is like "WTF IS THIS NONSENSE!?" and can make you puke up the food you're trying to eat heh

Did you ever consider small connibear traps? They are large and bulky, but they deadly efficient.
I love the conibear for longer term trapping. The weight is a bit much but it’s a clean quick kill and easy set up

What do you think of the speed hooks? I've read they are now standard issue for most military survival kits? What are your thoughts and experience with them?

I like the speed hooks, I have several. I give the advantage to the yo-yo’s as they will not just set, but often also reel it in depending on the size of course
@@GrayBeardedGreenBeret I have 6 of the yo yo reels and I've enjoyed using them They are legal in my state. I've caught turtles, catfish, bluegill, & bass using them.

Usually just carry this if I am headed out to a location that I plan to use it for food procurement for recreation or for a class. I used it last time in Florida
There are a lot of books on trapping.....Any you would particularly recommend? And do you recommend electronic versions over hardbound to minimize carry? Where are you on EMP?
You know, I haven’t found that one go-to trapping book yet, I like a handful of them and kind of take from each: Canterbury, Mears, and Kochanskis books include a great baseline.i tend to lean towards actual books, I am only on electronics out of necessity for business really. That leads me into the question about EMPs, I try to minimize reliance on electronics altogether so that no matter what, nothing counts in them making it through an EMP and if they do, that’s just gravy

Weight and space, plus the size of the game you are going after. “Micro-trapping” is often more fruitful and there is less processing and need for preservation. If I take a larger animal it will take me longer to process and preserve what I can’t eat right away. I think of it as having a dozen mini-burgers over the course of a day instead of a huge pot roast that I don’t have a fridge to put the leftovers in

How much does your intire pack weigh? So far it looks like it all weighs more than you would carry, unless you dont plan on returning for a long while.
My pack stays between 15-25 pounds. This trapping kit weighs about a pound and a half, not sure where you are getting the impression that it’s heavy

When setting the rat traps how often would you check them?

There are some rules when setting traps, such as always set on sign. If you set a trap and there is no sign of an animal, you dramatically reduce any chance of a catch. Going to great lengths to create habitat like running poles or slides only adds insult to the injury of empty traps. There are plenty of real slides and running poles! Never make artificial ones. A quick walk around a pond and you'll see sign a quick walk a long a game trail and you'll see sign.
Another rule is to create your set for the target animal. You aren't going to catch a coyote in a beaver set, well I won't say never but I'd never try it. Different animals eat different stuff, understanding what that stuff is can fill your traps because you'll know the bait to use for the target animal. Plenty of meat can end up in the pot by baits made right out on the trap line. Plenty of lures can be made from previously trapped animals.
By doing these things 10% daily yield would be easy
