I’ve carried a sling daily since early 2017. I remember feeling weird as a man carrying one, but the utility was undeniable. I’m happy they are commonplace now and the market is ripe with a plethora of options for a variety of use cases.
Slings have now become my go-to small EDC carry. I have 2 slings I rotate between, 2 backpacks I rotate between that I've made reviews on my channel. Nothing more satisfying than having the right bag for the right job and right amount of carrying volume. Love my slings because I can easily reach into it whenever I want so I actually use the things I need in my sling because it's just so convenient to.
I think that the people complaining about slings are missing the point of the sling. It’s not meant to be a backpack that you wear over one shoulder. It’s meant to be a smaller bag that takes things out of your pockets makes things quickly accessible so an essence it shouldn’t really be that heavy, I love my sling. I love that today’s world women are fighting for pockets and men are rocking bags
I love slings and everyday backpacks. I have several sizes, depending on how much I need to carry. I’ve carried them long before they were popular, and at age 71, certainly rocked the fanny pack years ago.
Main benefit of a sling for me is that I can wear one comfortably on my front whilst I carry my travel backpack on my back. Keeps my passport and valuables attached to me even when I'm taking my backpack on and off on planes, trains and buses. I've tried the small backpack on the front option but it's never as secure or comfortable. Slings are also perfect for inside an arena at festivals.
40+ years of travel. I (64m) have been a fan of a satchel, and have had several custom made from sailcloth and formal suit fabric to ballistic nylon. All in the name of style and function. I still use them because they are compact and hold a lot. But daily I use my Bellroy Venture thanks to this channel. Cheeers
Hated slings until traveled to Japan. When it's 34C and 100% humidity, the last thing you want is a backpack that makes your whole back drenched. Thus tried out slings and.. now it's my daily. One thing to note - simpler sling (one from Montbell + a camera cube inside to create pockets) helps me lug camera / iPad / laptop, while dedicated camera bags or laptop bags are very specific and doesn't let you carry anything else in addition of being bulkier and triple or quadruple the price
Interesting. I have concluded that a sling bag on your back is as sweaty as a backpack while also be worse for your back. Maybe I should give it another try.
I can't wear anything over just one shoulder, not a sling, and usually not even a crossbody purse unless it's really small. I embrace the waste pack and wear it proudly around my waist. I only use the smaller ones that will hold my phone, a charger, maybe a small poncho and a flip wallet. If I need something to carry more than that, it's a small backpack about the size of most slings and from there I go up in sizes of backpacks.
I tried a sling bag and really wanted to like it. By the time it was big enough to be useful for me it was too heavy to be comfortable. A sling can only be worn over one should light or heavy. A small pack can be worn over one should when light and two when heavy.
I've been using a 2L Decathlon folding pack since 2018 as EDC, and even cycling.. I can even carry a water bottle and umbrella at the same time by tying it around the strap. I hope they make a larger one with the same polyester material that's as lightweight. Now that I need to bring a case for my glasses, I'm forced to upgrade to a much bigger and thicker camera sling bag. It serves its purpose though.
Something to consider: in many museums and other sites popular with tourists no knapsacks are allowed, not even smaller ones. My husband had to stash his 16L day pack but luckily had a 2L sling as well so was able to keep his valuables with him. I have a crossbody purse that converts to a knapsack - so convenient for travel - and just switched to purse mode at these places.

I often use a smaller one for daily use when I need more room than my pockets or no pockets at all. Worn as a front sling.
Guys, you should try the alpaka bravo waist pack as a sling, it is 4L, and it is my favorite pocket essentials plus sling bag, it is incredible. Of course you can use it as a funny too.
I love my Bellroy Venture Sling 2.5L: - Wallet -phone -sunglasses - powerbank - nanobag - buds Perfect size to wear on chest, pickpockets were not a problem! I spent 10 fabulous days in London shopping! Amazing Sling with perfect size! If you wear more stuffs a backpack is a must have, bigger sling are USELESS but for few EDC items Slings are perfect!
I've been using sling bag for daily and traveling purposes for almost a decade now because of how convenient and safe it is. In countries where pickpocketing is still an issue, a sling bag is always the best choice when out and about regardless of whether or not it is in fashion.
I still have the one that I got from Canada's Wonderland in 1999, when I got my Season's Pass and I specifically got it to wear crossbody b/c it made more sense when going on the Roller Coasters. This translated to me wearing it daily as my purse as well and carried all the things that you mention they are used for now. This particular one was the first one I saw that wasn't just one compartment and made of cheap windbreaker -type material, it was a nice heavy black canvas, and the same size (maybe not as wide) as the popular Lulumemons you see. It was a main compartment with a front-flap compartment that you could use as its own wallet as it had pockets for cards and a change pouch built in, as well as a mesh pocket built into the full length of the front flap for cash. There were also zippers that went down the sides of this front compartment that you could use to open it completely....I never understood what you might need to do that for but it was a feature. It had an adjustable strap that also released from both ends (buckles like you would find on a backpack - the heavy plastic squeeze kind), and then put thru a belt-loop thing that was sewn into the back if you wanted to wear it thru the belt loops on your jeans (I never tried it as it seemed like it would be awkward). This Sling cost me prob $15 and I still use it, it was built to last as that was over 20yrs ago! Considering I was 21 at the time, I was totally ahead of my time (I can believe it when you say no one was wearing them like this cuz I didn't see anyone else wearing them crossbody - I didn't care if I was the only one cuz the logic made sense to me). It just goes to show you that if you wait long enough ANYTHING will come back into style...even if briefly
I use an Evergoods MHP for work to hold my gardening tools. Not the greatest to wear across my chest since I have to bend over the plants a lot so I wear it on my hip. Due to its size it actually gives me good lower back support when I wear it in Fanny mode and tighten down those straps.
Excellent video. As a world traveler since 1971 ( I’m 72) I’m loving my slings. Once the world reopened after COVID and we hit the road again, I’ve now acquired four of them. Which one I wear depends on the destination and means of travel ( air, rail, car, etc). I’m partial to Pacsafe products for their security features. I have many Bellroy products- except their slings. Magnetic attachments don’t meet my personal security concerns. But, it’s a personal choice.
Slings put pressure on a shoulder, which isn't good for my neck. When traveling, I usually have a mirrorless camera on a shoulder, and find a waist bag is best. I wear it in front when concerned about pickpockets, or when I need to quickly access what's inside. My go-to fanny pack can carry 2 water bottles (I only carry 1), a second camera with lens, and a whole lot more, with no weight on my shoulder.
I have a 26 Lt for longer days (carries EDC) a 12 Lt for short trips( carries same edc but doesn't look out of place at a restaurant, or visiting someone), a sling for grocery runs (keys, battery bank, wallet)
I'm always a big fan of backpacks since I was a child. Getting older (with back pain), I tend to carry less and less things, so slings fit my need better. My current favorite is Bellroy Lite Sling 7L.
You know I never even thought about getting a sling until now. I’m warming to the idea of getting one. My personal preference is a backpack but I can see cases where a sling will work just fine. The problem is finding the right one
There is nothing better to keep your essentials tight on you and in less than arms reach when drifting in and out of consciousness on a long haul. The right styled sling (*cough* Bellroy *cough*) then doubles as an elevated murse for urban meals/crawls when they daypack/diaper bag aesthetic is a look you're trying to keep in the rear view lol.
I enjoy slings because there are no clothes manufacturers who make pockets that work with all of the modern electronics I carry these days. Clothes with pockets are also typically heavier than those without! Its just easier to travel lighter and worry a bit less about where all of my important documents and electronics are.
I kept several "fanny packs" from the 90s due to their potential utility. But for a pear-shaped woman (perhaps men, too) carrying them on my backside was always problematic. Like many things, I am glad to see the evolution to accommodate so many different use cases, while having the downside of soooo many choices to make decisions. 😂
Since I’ve got my Lululemon sling, I can’t use anything else! It’s so perfect for everyday, and big enough for traveling too! Put my essencials, plus one or too things I’ll need in a particular day ( as powebank, headphones, kindle, small documents..). Love sling’s come back 😊
I have to admit, when I first started seeing "fanny packs" in places like the Adidas store some years back, I was confused. I never liked them in their first incarnation and couldn't understand why they were back. I only learned a few years ago that you can wear them across the chest, not as a belt bag. So I'm a late-adopter, but I love them now and have around six or seven of them. They're great for travel and everyday use, esp. riding public transport-very hard for a pickpocket to get at your stuff when it's strapped to your chest!
Usually I use a small under belly bag for flights and a huge military waist bag for when I'm out with my motorcycle. The first one I wear under my belly, and nobody ever at any airport asked me about it, it is totally hidden. The other one, which has approximately the size of the bag you showed at 8:32 yet a bit of a different shape, I wear always on my backside, and most probably that would make also sense in your case there in the video. Yet I would never wear one of these slings (as you like to call these thingies) cross body on my chest or (even worse) on my back, since I have a belly and it would look even more crazy on people with my body shape than when slim people wear it in that style (sorry to say that but ...). I've also never seen somebody beyond 50 or so wearing these bags in that style. I know it doesn't really matter nowadays how crazy or ugly anything is or looks, you just hire a couple of models or VIPs and a bunch of social media influencers and you can sell everything, and people don't even mind how they look with it (usually much different to Heidi Klum or you guys there), but I have my principles ... ;-) And just btw: Wearing such bags on the back as shown here several times is in my humble opinion also not at all suggestable in case you are in any crowd, metro, disco etc. since that is definitely a sure signal for pickpocketers to loot you ... So yes, my view on slings is quite complex it seems. Yet I don't condemn them in general and wear them in some situations, even though I avoid the cross body wearing style. And just to say it, even that cross body style is nothing bad. I wear in normal life (city and outdoors) usually another type of cross body luggage: a little haversack. For me usually much more convenient than a sling and fits definitely much better to any body shapes than a sling, believe me. Haversacks have had a similar up-and-down-history as you showed for the slings, I guess they were most prominent in the 70s and 80s or so, but of course the principle of these pieces dates back to thousands of years of use. That might demonstrate that people found such items at least useful over long periods of time, and maybe they are among the oldest pieces of luggage mankind has ever invented. And even though they are not in the current fashion style guides, I guess they will come surely back in a while, as I get meanwhile quite often asked from where I got mine and what brand it is. So there is clearly a growing interest there. I am always sorry when I have to confess that I got it tailored, and it is my own design - these things are obviously so out of fashion in the moment that you can't simply buy something like what I carry. ;-)
While slings might be a good option for some, I find that I end up being in pain after wearing one for a while. Either the weight on one shoulder or the strap rubbing against my neck. I'd rather just carry a crossbody bag that I can switch shoulders on. I guess that wouldn't be an issue for the interchangeable ones, but I still like a good crossbody over a sling any day.

Slings are still really nice for amusement parks - especially Universal Orlando because you don’t need to put them in a locker for most rides if you wear it around your waist.

Hate to tell you this but the first time I saw a front crossbody sling was 15 years ago worn by a young Asian guy at an international airport. It had been around and finally caught on in the West.
Just got one from outallday and I gotta say, I think it’s the best. YKK aqua-guard zipper, molle strap, 3.24 L, 10 pockets across 3 compartments… check it out
I’m a fan especially at the beach or when wearing shorts where stuff slips out of the pockets. My AER Day Sling 3 is great. Thought about the Code of Bell X-pod for a different esthetic.
I’m a sling bag convert! But I had to try a few different ones before I found what works best. I found a Costco dupe of the basic Lulu sling that works incredibly well as an EDC for me, and for travel. Holds everything I need! I also have a larger 8L sling that I use when I need to carry more. I don’t like it as much as the simple smaller bag. A note on what I see as toxic in our culture: I’ve been carrying bags for years, and I can’t tell you how many times women (and surprisingly few men) have said “nice purse!” Or “nice man purse” in a mocking way. It’s a bag. It carries stuff. It’s not a gender identity. Anytime someone says that to me I just say thank you, or sometimes “yes, I love my purse”

After using sling bags for a few years, I have done a 180, and am not a fan at all. A backpack is far better than a large sling in terms of distributing the weight symmetrically. Smaller sling bags are fine, I suppose but many have an annoying tendency to slide down, until they end up like badly designed "normal" bags.
I have never liked having anything in my pockets. I have pretty much never stopped using a "sling" since I started in the early 90s. I just wear it different now.
@@PackHacker Yep. It was a slim line hip bag made by a small Boulder, Colorado maker called Z-kreation. They still have a small presence on Facebook and have a similar model (Power Pouch) but mine was smaller with less zippers.
If you've got a large bust, too short strap length is a problem, and the silhouette of the bag right at or under the bust is not great. So I wear my fanny pack on my waist like it's still 1989.

I don’t generally use the term “fragile masculinity” for almost anything but can’t imagine what else to call it when American men avoid useful things just because they think it’s women’s apparel.
Slings are just fanny packs worn like a purse- and worn cross body is not a good look for women. Fanny packs are great, and keep the essentials at hand. I will often put the Fanny pack at the small of my back under my shirt, where it isn’t very visible.
Stop bluring the lines between fannypacks & slingbag, it is impossible to find an actual sling bag now. It is like finding a hoodie, now half the search results are just sweatshirts

Sorry, I disagree with the herd mentality: putting your carry weight on one side of the body is bad for back & shoulder health. While it might not look too trendy, putting the carry weight on your hips is much better. Don't believe me - put 7 lbs on one shoulder for a full day and see how you feel. The next day, wear that weight as a waist pack or fanny pack. It makes a big difference.
yeah good luck fitting you shopping stuff into a sling...backpack all the way! also one of them istn a pack its literally a backpack! a Sling is just useless, since you cant carry your shopping items for example, and i can say even more! Only palce i see a use is at a concert, where you already have a camp base with a tend and everything set up, otherwise dont see any benefit of a sling over a backpack in any thing you just said,. its just more useless to have a backpackl!
The fanny pack made a comeback when men's pants became hipster-tight. That had to do with the long-needed inclusion of Lycra in men's clothes. Before that, everything that fits in a tiny fanny pack would fit in your man-pockets. The rise of the fanny pack is inverse to the decline of the cargo pant/shorts. I have seen this tailored trend come and go and come again. I don't subscribe. I carry my important stuff on my body, ESPECIALLY my wallet, passport and phone. I would NEVER put that stuff in an external bag to get cut into, snatched away or left behind. The things I carry when traveling that won't fit into a pocket won't fit into a fanny pack either. That's why for 40 years I've carried a "vertical" messenger bag. It's the best compromise between security, carrying capacity, comfort and convenience. It carries stuff no reasonably sized fanny pack could hope to: water bottle, rain jacket, tablet etc. It hangs effortlessly by my side and swings around to the front for security or sitting on transport. And it looks a lot classier than a butt pack. The only thing it doesn't do well is run. Biking yes, but not running. But I don't carry a full "loadout" if I'm going for a run.

I wear it in front when concerned about pickpockets, or when I need to quickly access what's inside. My go-to fanny pack can carry 2 water bottles (I only carry 1), a second camera with lens, and a whole lot more, with no weight on my shoulder.
I have a 26 Lt for longer days (carries EDC) a 12 Lt for short trips( carries same edc but doesn't look out of place at a restaurant, or visiting someone), a sling for grocery runs (keys, battery bank, wallet)
Slings are great!
I'm always a big fan of backpacks since I was a child. Getting older (with back pain), I tend to carry less and less things, so slings fit my need better. My current favorite is Bellroy Lite Sling 7L.

There is nothing better to keep your essentials tight on you and in less than arms reach when drifting in and out of consciousness on a long haul. The right styled sling (*cough* Bellroy *cough*) then doubles as an elevated murse for urban meals/crawls when they daypack/diaper bag aesthetic is a look you're trying to keep in the rear view lol.

I enjoy slings because there are no clothes manufacturers who make pockets that work with all of the modern electronics I carry these days. Clothes with pockets are also typically heavier than those without! Its just easier to travel lighter and worry a bit less about where all of my important documents and electronics are.

I kept several "fanny packs" from the 90s due to their potential utility. But for a pear-shaped woman (perhaps men, too) carrying them on my backside was always problematic. Like many things, I am glad to see the evolution to accommodate so many different use cases, while having the downside of soooo many choices to make decisions. 😂

Since I’ve got my Lululemon sling, I can’t use anything else! It’s so perfect for everyday, and big enough for traveling too! Put my essencials, plus one or too things I’ll need in a particular day ( as powebank, headphones, kindle, small documents..). Love sling’s come back 😊

I have to admit, when I first started seeing "fanny packs" in places like the Adidas store some years back, I was confused. I never liked them in their first incarnation and couldn't understand why they were back. I only learned a few years ago that you can wear them across the chest, not as a belt bag. So I'm a late-adopter, but I love them now and have around six or seven of them. They're great for travel and everyday use, esp. riding public transport-very hard for a pickpocket to get at your stuff when it's strapped to your chest!

Usually I use a small under belly bag for flights and a huge military waist bag for when I'm out with my motorcycle. The first one I wear under my belly, and nobody ever at any airport asked me about it, it is totally hidden. The other one, which has approximately the size of the bag you showed at 8:32 yet a bit of a different shape, I wear always on my backside, and most probably that would make also sense in your case there in the video.
Yet I would never wear one of these slings (as you like to call these thingies) cross body on my chest or (even worse) on my back, since I have a belly and it would look even more crazy on people with my body shape than when slim people wear it in that style (sorry to say that but ...). I've also never seen somebody beyond 50 or so wearing these bags in that style. I know it doesn't really matter nowadays how crazy or ugly anything is or looks, you just hire a couple of models or VIPs and a bunch of social media influencers and you can sell everything, and people don't even mind how they look with it (usually much different to Heidi Klum or you guys there), but I have my principles ... ;-)
And just btw: Wearing such bags on the back as shown here several times is in my humble opinion also not at all suggestable in case you are in any crowd, metro, disco etc. since that is definitely a sure signal for pickpocketers to loot you ...
So yes, my view on slings is quite complex it seems. Yet I don't condemn them in general and wear them in some situations, even though I avoid the cross body wearing style. And just to say it, even that cross body style is nothing bad. I wear in normal life (city and outdoors) usually another type of cross body luggage: a little haversack. For me usually much more convenient than a sling and fits definitely much better to any body shapes than a sling, believe me.
Haversacks have had a similar up-and-down-history as you showed for the slings, I guess they were most prominent in the 70s and 80s or so, but of course the principle of these pieces dates back to thousands of years of use. That might demonstrate that people found such items at least useful over long periods of time, and maybe they are among the oldest pieces of luggage mankind has ever invented. And even though they are not in the current fashion style guides, I guess they will come surely back in a while, as I get meanwhile quite often asked from where I got mine and what brand it is. So there is clearly a growing interest there. I am always sorry when I have to confess that I got it tailored, and it is my own design - these things are obviously so out of fashion in the moment that you can't simply buy something like what I carry. ;-)
I prefer my leather sling from Quince over my purses for casual daily use - hoping slings are here to stay!

While slings might be a good option for some, I find that I end up being in pain after wearing one for a while. Either the weight on one shoulder or the strap rubbing against my neck. I'd rather just carry a crossbody bag that I can switch shoulders on. I guess that wouldn't be an issue for the interchangeable ones, but I still like a good crossbody over a sling any day.
TO me a sling is a rebranded fanny pack. I never wear one at home but it's always with me when i travel.

Slings are still really nice for amusement parks - especially Universal Orlando because you don’t need to put them in a locker for most rides if you wear it around your waist.
To add: I tend to wear one cross body when I’m walking about and then move it to my waist near the front of a line

Hate to tell you this but the first time I saw a front crossbody sling was 15 years ago worn by a young Asian guy at an international airport. It had been around and finally caught on in the West.
Just got one from outallday and I gotta say, I think it’s the best. YKK aqua-guard zipper, molle strap, 3.24 L, 10 pockets across 3 compartments… check it out
I’m a fan especially at the beach or when wearing shorts where stuff slips out of the pockets. My AER Day Sling 3 is great. Thought about the Code of Bell X-pod for a different esthetic.

I’m a sling bag convert! But I had to try a few different ones before I found what works best.
I found a Costco dupe of the basic Lulu sling that works incredibly well as an EDC for me, and for travel. Holds everything I need!
I also have a larger 8L sling that I use when I need to carry more. I don’t like it as much as the simple smaller bag.
A note on what I see as toxic in our culture: I’ve been carrying bags for years, and I can’t tell you how many times women (and surprisingly few men) have said “nice purse!” Or “nice man purse” in a mocking way.
It’s a bag. It carries stuff. It’s not a gender identity.
Anytime someone says that to me I just say thank you, or sometimes “yes, I love my purse”

After using sling bags for a few years, I have done a 180, and am not a fan at all. A backpack is far better than a large sling in terms of distributing the weight symmetrically. Smaller sling bags are fine, I suppose but many have an annoying tendency to slide down, until they end up like badly designed "normal" bags.
I have never liked having anything in my pockets. I have pretty much never stopped using a "sling" since I started in the early 90s. I just wear it different now.

@@PackHacker Yep. It was a slim line hip bag made by a small Boulder, Colorado maker called Z-kreation. They still have a small presence on Facebook and have a similar model (Power Pouch) but mine was smaller with less zippers.

If you've got a large bust, too short strap length is a problem, and the silhouette of the bag right at or under the bust is not great. So I wear my fanny pack on my waist like it's still 1989.

I don’t generally use the term “fragile masculinity” for almost anything but can’t imagine what else to call it when American men avoid useful things just because they think it’s women’s apparel.
Slings are just fanny packs worn like a purse- and worn cross body is not a good look for women. Fanny packs are great, and keep the essentials at hand. I will often put the Fanny pack at the small of my back under my shirt, where it isn’t very visible.
Stop bluring the lines between fannypacks & slingbag, it is impossible to find an actual sling bag now. It is like finding a hoodie, now half the search results are just sweatshirts

Sorry, I disagree with the herd mentality: putting your carry weight on one side of the body is bad for back & shoulder health. While it might not look too trendy, putting the carry weight on your hips is much better. Don't believe me - put 7 lbs on one shoulder for a full day and see how you feel. The next day, wear that weight as a waist pack or fanny pack. It makes a big difference.

The fanny pack made a comeback when men's pants became hipster-tight. That had to do with the long-needed inclusion of Lycra in men's clothes. Before that, everything that fits in a tiny fanny pack would fit in your man-pockets. The rise of the fanny pack is inverse to the decline of the cargo pant/shorts. I have seen this tailored trend come and go and come again. I don't subscribe. I carry my important stuff on my body, ESPECIALLY my wallet, passport and phone. I would NEVER put that stuff in an external bag to get cut into, snatched away or left behind. The things I carry when traveling that won't fit into a pocket won't fit into a fanny pack either. That's why for 40 years I've carried a "vertical" messenger bag. It's the best compromise between security, carrying capacity, comfort and convenience. It carries stuff no reasonably sized fanny pack could hope to: water bottle, rain jacket, tablet etc. It hangs effortlessly by my side and swings around to the front for security or sitting on transport. And it looks a lot classier than a butt pack. The only thing it doesn't do well is run. Biking yes, but not running. But I don't carry a full "loadout" if I'm going for a run.
