Between the writing, the voice acting, and the facial animations his presentation as a villain is an absolute joy to watch
My only gripe is his delivery in his story chapter, every line has the exact same delivery. But it is a small complaint for my favorite rendition of the sorcerer by far.

I found those interactions very interesting. You'd think Shang would use Havik as a tool, but maybe after his experience with his Titan counterpart he's gained some level of "morality."
Meanwhile this dude's whipping up a Soulnado on The Island, and nobody will listen to him. Onaga's Prophecy is unfolding before our very eyes and yet *nobody* listens to Shang Tsung when it's *absolutely critical.*

Liu Kang did something near impossible, made Rain a better person.

It’s actually insane how of the New Era, Rain and Havik have the highest body count so far.
And ironically, they're the most sympathetic of the villains.
I've been thinking the same thing. Buy we also have no idea how many Shang Tsung or Shao have killed either. Shang Tsung may have killed cities worth too. He's just down it at a slower rate in the shadows.
@@dblevins343 in one of the Liu Kang vs Rain quotes, the former says the latter killed around 500,000 Seidans. But Shang Tsung’s and General Shao’s body counts could most likely be in the thousands.
Liu Kang has the most blood on his hands I'd bet.
It's never explicitly stated but heavily implied Liu Kang began going insane. And that he had to give a *big* show of force to gain Outworld's respect.
Personally, I think Shao's hatred of Liu Kang stems from Liu Kang doing something horrible to him. It feels like personal hatred.

Where he gains his redemption against havik
I kind of love how unapologetically evil Shang Tsung is. Rain is repentant, and the other villains try to justify it (Shao and Reiko hide behind patriotism, Sub-Zero goes "no, it's the children who are wrong", Havik plays the victim, and Nitara acts like just because her species needs blood to survive, it doesn't matter how much they enjoy taking it without consent). While Shang Tsung is undoubtedly mad at how Liu Kang changed his destiny, he doesn't even pretend that he isn't having the time of his life causing as much suffering as possible. If Liu Kang hadn't given him a meaningless life, and he still stumbled upon his powers anyway, he would do the exact same thing without even pausing to think about it.
Liu Kang gave Shang Tsung, Quan-Chi, and Shao *very good* potential.
Shao: Still a leader, still a conqueror, but loyal. An aimed tool of destruction.
Quan-Chi: Is an Edenian, not a *demon.*
Shang Tsung: Not cursed by the Elder Gods to age rapidly.
They were given better lives than people think.

Liu Kang gave Shao a birth defect making him the disabled runt of his family and only made it to the position he is in currently through sheer willpower. Even if he hides it with patriotism he has a much more justified reason to hate Liu Kang in this New Era. Bro kinda inadvertently set him back on his villain path

All that stuff could be solved simply giving them good families.
Nobody is born evil but rather are product of their circumstances, and liu kang stupidly STILL gave them childhoods that led them to be evil anyways.
I think Havik kinda mixed between "chaos" and "destruction" in this game. I mean in MK Deception he wasn't really a murderous villain, just some weird dude who hates order.

He wanted to bring chaos to all the realms, and would happily teach the way of chaos to Shujinko and anyone who asks for it.

Reiko seems to have actual morals beyond what Shao taught him. As while shao repects havik. Reiko does not. Good to see he ain't a complete echo of shao's word

As evil, as he is, I can’t help but find Shang Tsung to be kind of charming and charismatic. His voice actor did a great job.
It isn't surprising, considering Shang Tsung was a scammer for pretty much his whole life (from how it's implied), before being offered magic from Titan Shang Tsung.
I do agree though, his voice actor did a fantastic job of selling out his charismatic nature.

I really hope Rain gets his redemption arc. It’s really cool to get to see these different sides of traditionally evil characters.
These and Reikos Tower ending have given me a strange kind of respect for him. Sure he's bloodthirsty, chaotic, and will do anything Shao asks him to do. (Also some of the most gruesome Fatalities in the game but I digress.) You got to hand it to him, he's a ride-or-die kinda guy.
He seems like who could have been a paragon of honor who's purpose was twisted. Shao may have had "good intentions" taking him in, but that's a very relative term.
What a gleegul, murdering and deceitful son of a gun is that Shang Tsung.
I love every dialogue of his. The voice actors on this one are earning their checks with gusto.
A villain I just love to despise.

Did you know, that whole Jen's body thing between Kung Lao and Nitara is a reference to Jennifer's Body, a cult classic horror-comedy starring Fox as the titular character, as well as Jen Reyland in Mortal Kombat: Conquest.

Of all the villains Havik is the most dangerous (not the most powerful) he is a true believer willing to commit and excuse any atrocity for his cause and he still believes that HE is the good guy.

I just remembered. Jen is the lover of Kung Lao. She only appeared in the show Mortal Kombat Conquest which in my opinion was a great show with amazing fight scenes.

The fact more people have more sympathy for Havik and Rain after they literally commit Genocide than they do Shao after he was manipulated into believing there was a threat to Outworld and that the powers that be would do nothing about it is kinda telling.
He's still a traitor that needs to be dealt with, but I don't think anyone seems to realize Shang and Quan Chi used him. I don't even think Shao himself realizes it.
Though with Rain he had no idea that aiding Havik would result in genocide and he actually shows remorse and guilt for the crimes he did both what he did when he aided Shang Tsung, and the genocide he inadvertently helped caused.
i have sympathy for rain because he clearly regrets helping havik to the point where he turns himself in for his arcade ending.
i don't sympathize with shao khan because his coup should've ended with the titan shang tsung reveal (since i'm pretty sure he was there for that) but instead he's "hey reiko let's go wake onaga for our war effort. what could go wrong?".
@@xsoultillerx Shao is a warlord now. In a warlord's mind, it's either do or die. Surrender will only get him executed.
Rain shows some remorse for his actions and realizes his folly, hence him turning himself in. Havik was ultimately a victim of Seido and while no one agrees with either actions there is some level of understanding with both. Shang was manipulated yes but he doesn't care about the wrongs he has done and ultimately had no reason to do these wrongs besides wanting power.
People have sympathy for Havik's cause, not Havik himself.

The endings are all canon. Rain destroyed Seido's capitol, half on accident. Now Havik has it in his hands and is spreading his tendrils to other realms.
It's going to be funny af when the real Havik comes along, casually erases Dairu Havik from existence, and just starts jovially laughing

Ashrah taking efforts to ensure the end of their race doesn't seem like the cleansing of the soul at all lol. Really weird how no one seems to give a rat ass about a whole species of sentient people facing extinction especially since it doesn't seem to be a case of being turned into vampires, as it is you are born one. Granted they're doing no favors for themselves by kidnapping people to breed.
Vaternians are essentially the elves of MK in this timeline. They see themselves as superior to all the other species and blame everyone but themselves for their problems. As much as Nitara wants to sympathy bait, anyone can piece together that Vaternians have always been aggressors/invaders and have no problem ending the other races to maintain their artificial immortality.
And feeding on the subsequent offspring that result from such unions. Face it, Vaeternians are problem animals at best, sadistic freaks at worst. Liu Kang said it himself that Vaeternus' ways were ultimately unsustainable, but Nitara and likely all others refused to listen. Whatever happens, happens.
When all is said and done, they are vampires. A threat.

Kung Lao said he hurt as well others for his ambition, he felt guilty for this, at least he learnt from his mistakes and he is a little more humble; even Rain understood his mistakes but the others have no regrets at all.

He simply took away any possibilities of Shang becoming a threat should he choose the path of evil again in his new era. Yet magic or no magic, Shang Tsung continued to be treacherous and heartless. It's in his blood, no matter the timeline
