  • Arena was once a bustling farming community on the plains of North Dakota. Struggling with the dust bowl and the Great Depression, the residents gradually left. The one roomed school house closed in 1961, but the town held on until 1996 when its Post Office closed and Arena officially became a ghost town . Join us as we explore the unusual remains of this once quaint township.

In North Dakota (called "Nort" Dakota by locals and Minnesotans) the Welk family farm exists as a tribute to the state's best known celebrity.
To be fair Peggy Lee is also from there and much more desirable musically but that's pop culture.

What a lonely place this is, especially with the wind sweeping in. The town survived 35 years after the school closed. I don't know how to interpret that.🤔 Even with an access to railroads, it just seems so isolated. With 150 people... yes, there are a lot of structures, you mentioned, that are gone, unfortunately. They would have been interesting to see.
Thank you, Andrea and Steven, this was super interesting, as always.

The wind in this case was such a soft sound of the grass it was a lovely. Your tick concerns reminded me of when my husband came back from dear hunting, he would throw all his clothes off and yell...TICK CHECK. He was so weirded out by them. I would always find several while laughing at his being so creeped out. Thank you both for another great adventure.

The wind in the grass so beautiful and evocative of dreams and memories
    Who has seen the wind?
    Neither I nor you.
But when the leaves hang trembling,
    The wind is passing through.
    Who has seen the wind?
    Neither you nor I.
But when the trees bow down their heads,
    The wind is passing by.

Hi there, Stephen & Andrea. Just a suggestion about keeping bugs and other things from crawling under your pants legs to get on your skin. Wear longer socks like Tube Socks, that reach up to near the Knee, roll them to the ankles, wrap the pants legs around your ankles, and then pull the socks over your pants legs toward the Knee. No bugs should be able to crawl under your pants to get to the skin; everything will be on the outside of your clothes!! To see them easier, light colored pants and socks work better as they are more visible.

    • @PinInTheAtlas

That looks like one of several places I've passed along I-90: always wondered about them, but as you know, many of the farm towns there are miles from anything.
Always loved those "milk carton" grain elevators: you still see a lot of those in use in that part of the country, as well as in Alberta, Canada.

Those are purple cone flowers. There used to be an upright Edison H-19 model phonograph in the yellow house that played the really thick flat records. The school that was there was built of brick and had a couple of classrooms in it. I think the wood frame school was moved into town later on. Interesting that there is a newer built house there. Interesting explore! We use to have towns like that here in the early 1960s, but they have all been removed and put under plow! Flowers along the roads are usually the only hint there were buildings there once. Lillie's and Irises are good indicators. The coneflowers like what you found are a little trickier due to the wild varieties, but some are clearly not wild! Once, I stopped and investigated a stand of trees in the middle of a field where everything that could be farmed ... was farmed and I found a stone marker for a town that was no longer on the map.
