- I so often hear artists or art students say something like, "I want to paint like her because she sells lots of paintings." The reality is, you should want to paint like YOU, not like someone else. You have been given specific gifts to use to express yourself as only YOU can. It's your job to figure out what those gifts are, and how to use them.

• Don't Compare Yourself...
Throughout the years I have experienced how hard it can be to maintain this carefree feeling of making art. It is so easy for doubt, fear and overall negative thoughts to pop up. This is something which was not present as a child, my learning capabilities were even far more enchanced, purely due to the fact that I did not worry about whether or not I would make mistakes or have to compare myself to someone else. Going back to that state of mind might seem easy, but it takes a lot of daring and letting go.
Sakina, it is difficult - that’s what makes it so rewarding. Thanks for watching and sharing.
That's the pep talk I needed to hear today. Thank you.
Lori, you’re welcome - thank you for watching.
Thank YOU MUCH.
Hard Talk is Accepted and Helpful.
You’re welcome.
Thank you for watching "Don't Compare Yourself to Other Artists." Have you ever caught yourself comparing your skills and ability with those of another artist?
Good advice David. I work in a singular, geometric style and focus on color combinations. Some viewers express surprise or others may comment "is that all you do?" Such responses are not unexpected while working and showing in a rural locale. I love to paint and express ideas in color; to stimulate and reveal what is yet unseen.
I'm sure your You Tube videos are encouraging to many other artists. Keep it up!
Peter, thanks for watching and sharing.
thank you, your words make me happy
Thanks for watching
I needed this reminder. Thank you.
Kate, you’re welcome! Thank you for watching.
This brought tears to my eyes because as a new painter who has wanted to be a painter her whole life I'm still trying to figure out the basics and where I fit in. And there is SO MUCH on social media that it can be intimidating and overwhelming. If I focus on what others are doing I begin to doubt that I have anything worth sharing. It's like surfing... I have to keep my focus on my own wave and not worry if others are catching more or better waves. If I dont I'll get so distracted or envious or frustrated that I won't be able to enjoy the precious opportunity I have right in front of me! My painting is the same wave and thank you so so much for reminding us that our experiences are all unique and meaningful. You're so awesome!
Susan, you definitely, as a new painter, need to focus on the fundamentals and how to put together a good painting - those need to be ingrained into your head through lots of practice. At this point, you don’t need to figure out where you fit in. Once you learn how to paint, you will begin to develop a certain way that you do things that will set your work apart from others. You also need to stop looking at what others do. Of course you’ll do it some, but not too much. Thanks for sharing.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 great advice! Focus on the fundamentals learn them first. Then move on organically. Thanks for this!
It's SO true what you said about people just copying other artists style or even their art. I see so much of that within the art community, and it's honestly so boring. Every artist should take time to experiment and find the thing that only they can do! I honestly believe that every one of us is capable of a unique, fresh expression of our own artwork. Even if you're influenced or inspired by another artist, your work should never look exactly like theirs. 👐
Megan, you said it all - and thanks for doing so - I don’t need to add a thing. Thanks for watching and sharing!
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 of course! Keep up the good work, love your vids.
@@meganholdham8370 thank you!
Comparison is the thief of joy and creativity!
Thanks for watching.
Thank you david, I really needed this!
You’re welcome!
Ugh I always compare myself to others. It stopped me from painting for yrs till I found fluid art n then CZcams n now I just go for it! I agree with you. Ty!
Tamera, you’re welcome.
Yes, I so needed to hear that!
Selahmon, we all need to hear it - even old guys like me who have been painting forever. You gotta be yourself, cause there’s no one else like you!
Wow! I needed to hear this even though inside I already knew it… I wish you were my mentor ☺️💝🙏🏼
Melitta, thanks for watching!
I know it’s not good I wish I saw this video before. I love drawing but every time someone in social media just out does me which made me to strive and get better. I guess that’s why I got a lot better and social media did actually help with choosing an art style but I loved this video. ❤️🩹
Thanks again for an informative video teaching! Still growing in skills and finding my voice. Your workshop in September really gave me the foundation I needed! 😀
Hi Sandy - you’re welcome - thanks again for watching.
Thank you for this video. When the covid red zone lifts in my city, I will be showing 4 of my paintings at a small gallery. It will be my first time. I'm proud of my paintings but it is also scary to put it all out there. This video will help my mindset. Thank you again.
Dominique, congratulations on being able to show your paintings. It’s always scary to put yourself out there, and the first time is always the scariest. But you’ve done the work and expressed yourself, so feel good about that!
A really good point, David !! I compare myself to other artists !! It's a bit competitive with me, which I don't like, plus self doubt at times !!!! However I think that I am influenced by other artists and have ended up with my own style !! Thanks !!
Rob, typically people do take small things they learn from other artists and incorporate that into what they do - I have done that over the years. As I said in the video, when you try to be exactly like another artist, that’s where the problem lies. Thanks again for watching.
Thank you for this pep talk, it came at the right time for me👌
Fiona, you’re welcome - thank you for watching!
This was great to hear, thanks.
Kirby, you’re welcome.
Read this louder
Ignore what everyone else is doing. Your life is not about everyone else; it’s about you. Instead of focusing on their path, pay attention to your own. That’s where your journey is taking place.
Sharing some positivity with ya all
That mostly summarizes what I said in the video.
Tell that to my art teacher
Does ur art teacher tell you to compare yourself??
People should realise, that success has nothing to do with money..
Everyone has their own definition of what success means for them - for some it may be money, but for most I suspect it is not. Thanks for watching.
Hi David! Love your videos and your art is awesome! I wanted to know if you had experience breaking the paint and if it happened how did you fix it. I was trying to move a painting and it ripped
Florencia, are you asking do I know how to repair a ripped canvas? If so, yes I do. You’ll need some raw, or roll canvas that you can cut a small pat h from. Get some gel medium to use as an adhesive. Apply the gel medium to the rip on the BACK of the canvas. Put the patch piece into the gel medium and then put some weight on it overnight. Once it’s dry you can then patch the paint on the front of the canvas.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 Thanks so much!! I’m using paper canvas should I do the same to fix it? Sorry for not being specific before
@@florenciadegraf4531 sorry, I have never heard of paper canvas. You would patch it with the paper canvas material using the gel medium as the adhesive.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 thanks for the quick answer and kindness!
