Just got a job at a family medicine clinic as a student helper (I’m a med student 🤓) - took my first blood sample and EKG today, both went really well, and I’m super proud of myself! Been taking time to play the piano and saxophone, which I love, and playing board games with my family 🥰 Lots do to, not enough time, but I love my life at the moment

You don't need to justify your tears! Medical School is hard, it pushes you beyond your limits. Heck, I cried throughout basic sciences, I cry after coming home from rotations after a hard day. I cry when my patients are in pain, I cry when their family is in pain. Emotions are what make us human, and if we lose that we are losing our humanity. Keep that with you, Rachel. Laugh your heart out, but cry when you need to. It's what makes you a more empathetic future doctor, and if anyone tells you otherwise just ignore it lol.

New medical students: Here are 8 tips for success👇
Stop comparing yourself to others. You got into medical school, that is an extraordinary achievement.
There is no way to learn everything.
    Seek out help when needed.
Be sure to block out time for yourself.
    Make friends.
    Be open-minded and be humble.
    Check in with yourself.
Do not take yourself too seriously.

Don’t ever be ashamed of crying! Grad school of any type is so tough, and often is harder than real life because you’re learning, you’re not the expert yet. I’m also a “crier.” I cry when I’m happy, sad, tired, angry, stressed, whatever! And then I feel way better afterwards ❤️

I just wanted to say that you crying and showing it online helps me to feel normal. I'm also in medical school and lately I've been crying every day because I'm studying 15 hours a day before my exam and still feel like I don't know anything. This year I cried more than I ever did in my lifetime. Sometimes I feel so hopeless because I study so much and still manage to fail. Please don't stop showing us your emotions. And also if some of you never been to medical school you have no right to judge if someone is going to be a good doctor. Guys it's so hard sometimes, you have no idea.
Please excuse my mistakes if there are any. I'm not a native speaker.

@@chelseamensah1732 You're welcome ❤️ Future doctors don't have it easy. It's nice to see someone being productive but it's also important to know that we're all human and we're not perfect but it's okay. Maybe it's weird but seeing people cry and stress out like me but then still managing to study and go on with their dreams motivates me a lot.

As someone who has lived through premed, med school and hospital internships with people who can't help but spout toxic positivity and insensitive remarks that are never called for or asked, especially those who are only looking at my life from the outside... I really would love it if anyone who doesn't think they experience anxiety to the point of tears would NOT judge people who's way of coping is to share/release their emotions in their personal time. Especially those who are not in the medical field or have no experience in spending hours upon hours in a day studying just to prepare for dealing with real events and people. Just once, I'd love those people to stop and think about what their about to say and really internalize what it would feel like if someone said the same thing to them in their lowest times. It's a valuable virtue to be honest but mindful of what you can and should tell people who have vastly different experiences from you. Be like Rachel and speak with respect and tact. Okay, rant over.

I love love love that you post videos of yourself crying. You’re absolutely right, it is much different sitting in your room studying for 12 hours a day than it is interacting with patients. I’ve dealt with that as a nursing student. There is just so much information to remember and all of that can be so overwhelming. I used to hold in all my emotions but after watching your videos, I’ve let it all out and started crying and I feel so much better after I’ve cried! I'm so happy you're putting this message out there because doctors are humans too and you need space to have your own feelings as well.

I really appreciate how open you are about your emotions actually. I was studying for the mcat and although that will never compare to the stress of medical school, during my studying I can’t tell you how many times I cried out of frustration because it was just so much material. That doesn’t mean I didn’t pick myself up and move forward, it just means that I didn’t let myself shove those feelings aside and would rather face them even if they come out as tears. I ended up doing just fine on my MCAT so being emotional doesnt mean you’re less intelligent or less strong that anyone else. :) i really appreciate your transparency because school is hard and other people who are struggling too should not have to pretend like everything is perfect.

Hi Rachel! I have been watching your content and must say that you including videos if you crying and not just cutting it out of your videos to only show the positive side is so brave. I have high respect for that. Most people are afraid to put their raw emotions online because of judgement. Please don’t let people change you. You are going to be a great doctor!! You got this!!!!!

Also, let’s all keep in mind that crying is the most natural and instinctive way of letting emotions come out! When you cry you’re basically letting out what’s trapped inside and making you feel stressed/anxious/nervous - when we keep it in that’s when it gets hard to handle! Yes, in a professional environment (especially in the medical field) it’s not possible to cry on the spot when things come up, and yes momentarily storing things in is necessary but: eventually we have to feel these emotions! Whether it be by almost exploding in nervousness/anxiety, through coping mechanisms orrrrrrrr through letting it happen in our bodies (i.e crying!).
Crying is necessary and super important! If you can cry on the spot then definitely let it out! If not try and give yourself a moment after the fact when you can be by yourself or supported if it feels better and leeeeeet itttttttttt ouuuuttttt 💙
I love how open you are about mental health and sharing allllll facettes of med school. You’re absolutely awesome, motivating and have an incredible emotional intelligence! The Herd is only better because of that! 😄❤️

I fully understand how it is to be a medical student. Being a 1st year, about to take my finals for 2nd year promotion, I can tell how it is. I, myself, am not much of a "crier". I can't like, cry easily and even then, sometimes I do cry which is a big deal because it's an anomaly for me. But the stress is so high at times, and you feel inadequate at times because of the vastness of the course, that you breakdown. And I'm so happy to have found this channel and you Rachel, will be an amazing amazing amazing doctor.❤️❤️❤️❤️

Girl!!!!! Cry all you want! Medical school is hard enough for you to not to feel anything and break down sometimes!!! That's what makes us human. I'm doing my degree in Clinical Psychology and I have my hard cries many times! Having classes and being with patients at the same time can be a little overwhelming! So don't apologize for being human! We know the struggles and are here supporting you and the community! We're all in this together! (cue High School Musical!) Keep going girl!

Thank-you SO much for your comments around crying (∼10min in) . I am very much a cryer when I get stressed, and the rest of my family are not (they get angry instead) and so I've grown up around people who think I'm weak because I cry. I never understood why they thought that, but I still felt like I had to hide a part of me so that I wouldn't get comments like the ones you're describing. I LOVE your videos that show when you're having a hard time. They help me embrace myself more. I think your empathy will make you a far better Dr. You will see things about patients that most will miss because they don't see. Thanks. You're awesome. p.s. The environment is SO different when you're working, you have something to put all that stress into and in fact, you probably thrive in that environment. I know I do. Crying in your bedroom when uni is too much says nothing about your capability as a Dr.

Med school is rough, I go through so many different emotions throughout the day, from rage to anxiety to overwhelmed to unmotivated. In the end, I think you're just showing us what a good doctor who cares looks like.

I think it’s really important as a med student to be able to identify all feelings and be in touch with them because you maintain that level of humanity which is sometimes missing in the medical field 😌

Hi Rachel, I always love your vlogs because they're so raw and open. I'm in my last year of high school in the UK and this week I did my ucat exam for applying to medicine. I'm really happy and proud of how hard I worked and prepared for it. Thank you for showing how you really feel in your videos and it is great to see someone who strives to be a good and human doctor and not just a doctor who knows all the information.
