Unboxing my new Martin D-28

  • With covid driving demand from new players, like myself, whilst also forcing working restrictions on the manufacturers, this delivery was a long time in the making.
    It is the Reimagined D-28, the iconic dreadnaught, in all of the high quality glory that they are renowned for.
    Musos Corner in Newcastle, NSW, were on top of everything and delivered not only an awesome guitar, but also exceptional service.
    This purchase was made with a bequest from my parents estate. I didn't want to just pay off another bill, or buy an investment with the money. Having something beautiful, that i play and enjoy every day was my way of marking their passing.
    This guitar is so beautifully set-up, so easy to play, don't listen to the 'not for beginners' lie. Having a beautiful sounding, well set-up guitar makes it easier to sound good and encourages exploration.
    Having watched an extraordinary amount of guitar related video content I thought someone out there might enjoy watching this video.
    Enjoy

    Congrats. Nothing like a Martin. My hillbilly dad from the Ozark mountains always told me they were the best. Just had my OM18V neck removed and re-set up. I was really itching to get it back home. Thankfully, Martin paid for all the repair work, but I did have to call them myself and explain to the rep. why this work should covered under their warranty....so keep that in mind. If you should need luthier services on your guitar in the future, make sure they are a Martin certified luthier, and do not just take their word for it if they say Martin won't pay for it (this is what I was told). Call Martin yourself, and present your case. Take care of your guitar, it's an heirloom.

      Thanks James. The OM18 is beautiful guitar too. As I am in Australia I can't take advantage of the Martin in-house warranty repairs but need it to be serviced b a local certified luthier. I am already calling this my "Dead Man's Martin" because that's what its going to take before the next player gets their hands on it as it is mine for life.

    My first great guitar was a 1972 Martin D-28 in 1974, which was $500 used at the local music store. The guy before me filed the medium frets down too far, so I replaced them with jumbo frets, making it much easier to play (for me). Eventually I lost that D-28 to drugs, but I'll always remember it fondly. Before that I had a Sigma and Takamine D-18 copies, which were both excellent guitars too, and I'm partial to mahogany sides and back, but rosewood has its own charms. Enjoy your new beauty, she will become a family heirloom eventually, if you have children.... Cheers!

      Thanks Pharmer David-sorry you lost yours. Drugs do tend to take away a lot of your good toys. When I was growing up a whole lots of rich kids I knew did a lot of drugs and I came from a more modest middle class household, so I saw drugs as being elitist. Strange attitude I know, but it kept me away from drugs (apart from the odd bit of weed). This was bought with some of the proceeds of my parents estate so this is definitely a keeper, a reminder of my parents.

      The worst part was not having touched one in a while I was not so sure that it would be the big improvement over my base model laminated Takamine (a great guitar for $300). Luckily my doubts were allayed at first strum. Sold the Takamine as I didn't need a replica in my small collection but should have kept it for travelling/camping. Bought a second hand Cort Classical for just on $200 recently to fulfil that role

    *The pickguard is the only thing on that guitar that is fancy. It's quite plain. When you spend a lot of money, the guitar should show this. This is the equivalent of a rich person driving a 2000s VW Beetle.* 😑
    *The sound of a high-end Martin can be matched for 1/2 the price in any brand other than Gibson, Taylor, Larrivee, or other hoity toity manufacturers. Oh!! And being a skillful guitarist, as well.*

    • @plusone4726
      @plusone4726  Před rokem

      Thanks Charlie, the guitar is super comfortable on the neck, the radius on the finger board is much more playable than on my nylon guitar. Satin finish is a nice touch to the neck-I had a similar neck on my Takamine. Out of the box the action was a touch high making playing down the neck really difficult. Tuning is amazing as I rarely have to retune the guitar, and I am still playing the original martin strings it was shipped with. Going to replace them eventually with a lighter slinkier string as I don't have the skills to bend these strings and even hammering on doesn't work. But when I am sitting in my lounge room strumming away I am rewarded by the rich resonance of the instrument. I think my next guitar will be a mahogany acoustic, slotted headstock, maybe a smaller guitar as I love the richness of the mahogany-so distinct from the brightness of the rosewood/spruce combo.
