      if you think about it, he's very similar to Voldemort:
      > had some large amount of power and an important bloodline
      > some unreliable prophecy told him that a certain person would kill him
      > attempts to destroy that person, who is saved by his mom, who dies; the prophecy is made true by this
      > goes into hiding for long amount of time before reemerging out of the shadows with newfound power
      > takes what is "rightfully his"
      > the hero from the prophecy rises against him despite the odds, and decides to face that hero in his arrogance, leading to his doom.
      except Shen was deeply menacing, had great dialogue and greatly scarred the hero emotionally at a young age, and also had better written motivations with one clear goal in mind.

    Lord Shen is un-ironically the greatest villain in all of DreamWorks movies. None of the others come close with how they effect both the world and the characters on a physical and emotional level.
    He was cunning, clever, arrogant and insatiably vengeful. He meant more to the main character than any other villain in the Dreamwork lineup. Everything he does makes sense and has thought put into it, all of his flaws have a great amount of setup and reasoning behind them.
    I will argue till the end of days that Shen takes the top spot by an insanely wide margin and easily can claim a spot as one of the greatest villains in animation.

    • @thejosesarangoproject5700
      @thejosesarangoproject5700 Před 4 lety +588

      I definitely agree. The two best villains I can think of from Dreamworks are Tai Lung and Shen just because of how they are built up and developed throughout the film. Shen specifically is animated beautifully, especially how he perks up his feathers during battle to disguise his next attacks and distracts his opponents. They made a peacock intimidating not through brute strength, like Tai Lung, but with a wicked intelligence and apathy for those he needs to kill to reach his goals. He's able to go as far as commit genocide to secure his life, only to give birth to his greatest adversary. He is the yang to Po's ying, and is the best villain by far, with Tai Lung a close second.

      It could be argued that Shen isn't arrogant
      Arrogant is "having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities." He clearly isn't like that with his abilitys as he agreed he was no match to the Kung Fu of Master Croc, Master Ox and Master Rhino. Shen wasn't even set up to be invincible he was even shown to be at some points to be afraid of Po.

      Too bad they don't wanna expose their kids with dark cartoons like this. Parents also need to show their kids the harsh reality too to make them realize that once they grow up, it's not all sunshine and rainbows.
      The second movie taught a valuable lesson too. No matter how hard you went through, achieving inner peace is always possible if you embrace the hardships and let it flow. The past cant be changed. Dont hold deep grudges, or inner peace would be impossible. Shen didnt learn this, so he was shocked as to how Po managed to achieve it despite being scarred for life of losing his family throughout his life (before kfp 3).
      Man, i wish if they make another movie, they would make another that could par the first and second movie. I think what made Kai a weak villain for me is that the moral of his story was essentially the same as Shen’s: the more you take, the less you have. Both were ravenous warlords trying to fill some void with power.
    What made Tai Lung different was that he wasn’t motivated by power per se, but instead was driven by a noble ambition (become the greatest Kung fu practitioner) that became poisoned by vengefulness. And Shen of course was unique because he was the first power/destruction driven villain in the series.

    • @anicjan4654
      @anicjan4654 Před 4 lety +75

      Tai Lung was motivated by hard work and dedication. He was destroyed by the belief that hard work can do anything, which is not in and of itself a bad philosophy but without ambition being tempered and understanding that fine line it can lead to a crisis of self when you meet a brick wall. Tai Lung couldn't accept his loss and to a fair extent, it was his father ambition and philosophy that failed him.
      In Shen the story is reversed. Shen fails his parents with a new philosophy of aggression and his own ambition in his creation, canons, and his willingness to invest in its future at any means possible. Not realizing that on that day he a had a choice between family and creation.
      Tail Lung made no new path in himself. He trusted his family. Shen did and lost his family trust. In the first one po is tempted by his father pessimism to be a simple noodle merchant but by his own luck-and actions...unintended as they were- he becomes the dragon warrior.
      With shen story, po finds himself drifting from his family in search of identity much like shen did. For different reasons, but at the core the divergence is there. Both of these characters are also dealing with a loss of family. One taken, one ejected from.
      My point is. Both of these stories had interconnecting themes and trials. I don't remember the third one at all because at his core Kai was just a bad guy martial artists but for some reason the theme of families were continued-with po village- also they ruined the mysticism of it all by literally turning kung fu into shiny green powers. In 2 inner peace was an exalted state that could be argued just as much within the user as in usage of soul jucii or whatever.

    Lord Shen is without a doubt the best villain in the entire Kung Fu Panda series. Tai Lung was a great villain, too, but he's just kinda forgotten about after the first movie, and is more of a power hungry villain who wants revenge on the people who, in his eyes, took away the destiny that was promised to him.
    Lord Shen, however, is not only powerful and cunning, bit also a threat to all of Kung Fu and China. He isn't a single threat, as he has an entity army at his side. Yes, he's power hungry, but he's stronger in terms of numbers and his main weapon. He turned what was originally supposed to be used for joy and happiness into a lethal weapon that killed even Master Rhino. I'm sure it would have been enough to kill even Tai Lung.
    But most importantly was his impact on the protagonist, Po. The second Shen learned of a threat to him, he retaliated by commiting mass genocide on all Pandas. This introduction to Po's past and original family feels organic because it answers the question people had in the first movie: where are the other pandas? (This was even hinted at in the first movie when Po says to Ping, "Sometimes I can't even believe you're my dad.")
    Throughout Kung Fu Panda 2, Shen uses Po's trauma against him. Po gets flashbacks of Shen's doings at the sight of the mark on his feathers. He had to face his traumas and find inner peace within his pain in order to defeat Shen. Shen even impacts the tribe of pandas, and especially Po's biological father, in the third movie, as there is an entire scene with Po's father talking to Po about his mother (it even includes the scene where she sacrifices herself for Po's survival.
    Kung Fu Panda 2 (and the series as a whole) is amazing, and anyone who has seen it as a kid should rewatch it so they can discover the masterpiece that it truly is.

    Shen was so close to taking over China if Po and the gang didn't stop Shen's invasion
    *Shen* is literally my favorite villain in Dreamworks, his story is well written
