The Greek royal family gathered in Athens to say their final goodbyes to Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark. Queen Sofia traveled from Mallorca to attend the funeral, accompanied by her sister, Irene of Greece. Queen Sofia appeared deeply saddened and unwilling to accept the loss. Prince Michael's widow, Marina Karella, wore a white suit, defying convention. Prince Michael renounced his rights to the Greek throne to marry Marina, who was not of royal blood. He had a tumultuous personal life but was well-loved by the Greek people.
