    Mr. Mark Mothersbaugh looks very nostalgic yet brooding here. Sometimes, it can be very painful to go tripping down memory lane.

    I liked Smooth Noodle Maps. It was better than Total Devo, but nobody cared by this stage.

    • @InfiniteRhombus

      that was the most devo sounding album, it sounded exactly like you would expect a devo album to sound in 2010, thats what was great about it, smooth noodle maps aside from 2 songs was one of the most depressingly bad albums, i love devo dont get me wrong but that album is garbage

    Smooth Noodle Maps was released as a record in England. Great album.

      Yes it is but barely anyone bought it and the tour for it was so poorly attended that it was called off half way through in early 1991 then their record company went broke forcing them to break up, sad really

    "20 years after, i hope people would realize that Smooth Noodle Maps isn't a bad album"...
    Well, 25 years later and a new album from Devo, we can say that SNM was surely quite a disappointment from such a great band.
    Anyway, as a fan of Devo, I do like SNM even if the record sounds weaker than other albums from the same band. Why ? Because there's still that "Devo feel" in it !

    • @chasedcantrell
      @chasedcantrell Před 8 lety +6

      +Frank Reich I like SNM too. I also like "Shout" which is one most people don't like. The only song I don't necessarily like is spin the wheel from snm.

    devo and the dead are on opposite ends of the "rock music" spectrum. but if you watch interviews with mark or jerry from '80 to '90 there is a common thread in their interview style. polite, genuinely informational in a very selective fashion. when mark or jerry divert from the direct line of questioning, for one reason or another, it's not always evident, until they've described a good number of thoughts, analogies and maybe metaphorical tales that either correspond to the original question asked a minute or so ago ...or perhaps NOT. morning dew as a thing came on AFTER i began making this comment. kinda spooky coincidence, eh?

      The conflict between "the punks" or "the new wave" and "hippies" was just as invented as those terms and mostly by the same people. None of the smart bands really thought any of that, especially the heavy ones, actually. Black Flag were into The Dead, The Germs liked the Beatles and The Stones, Joe Strummer hung out with Bob Weir all night drinking and had to be torn away physically to get to his show that night...the Sex Pistols didn't "hate pink Floyd" like the t shirts their manager made said. Sid Vicious was named after Johnny Rottens hamster which was in turn named after Syd Barret. It's weird that people tried to make all that into a return to the 50s (?) because really from The Stooges and The MC5 on up it was all nothing if not a product of the underground (and bubblegum and garage rock and girl group etc) 60s. The criticisms for "the sixties" is often confused as hatred for all things from the 60s. It was actually just a different interpretation, a flipside, that had always been there. It was often, at first especially, implemented by people like the Deads peers or slight underclassmen anyway; rather than the new generation that would be the fans of it. Yeah, while their artistic aims were different ultimately, I feel like these dudes are in many ways cut from the same cloth. Really, Devo were the revenge for Kent state. Gerald Casale was friends with 3 of the victims and said that the news reported that four national guard solders were killed by students and rednecks were driving around with shotguns hanging out of their truck windows "hunting students" that's when he realised "everything was evolving backwards now" and that was the beginning (for him) of "Art Devo" De-evolution. They would use the traditions of high art with the subjects of the crass commercialism they were subjected to as a counter to all that...what could be more 60s than that? The funny thing is, out of the two, Mark is a bit more the "politico" "spirit of the sixties" guy while it's really Garcia, by comparison, who is the red meat, dope, guns, and fucking in the streets guy. Not exactly, obviously, but Jerry Garcia is more of an artist on that Iggy Pop spectrum than Devo, a guy connected to the *old* way of art, the dangerous side. So I guess it's a question of "which 60s" and "which punk rock" are we talking about and most people didn't really calmly parse through all that in the 70s and 80s unfortunately, though I can definitely say some tried.
