Thank you! I love seeing your support for my channel
@@Prozzie It is my biggest honor, thanks to you too! Support & Love forever! 😍✌
1. Many can speak English
2. They love Japan
3. They're very religious
4. They hate the heat
5. Many don't drink (I think they actually do
6. Many don't swim
What I learned from living in Taiwan from 1999-2013:
1. They treat foreigners better than Taiwanese, unless you're ugly.... then you're screwed
2. They have a very good sense of humour compared to those of other cultures
3. They travel, both around their country and abroad, more than those of most other cultures
4. They turn into completely different people when they drive, so don't get in their way
5. They are way, way, way more money-conscious (they will budget and count every dollar to the level of cheap) compared to the Chinese
Hahaha, you really know Taiwanese ppl
4. They turn into completely different people when they drive, so don't get in their way
The religious part is always surprising to me and I didn’t realize it until I was an adult. My dad’s side of the family is super Christian and my mom’s side is very Buddhist/taiwanese folk religion and it skipped my parents and they’re both atheist (and moved to the US). So I never realized religion was so big over there until my mom would say stuff like “oh your cousin got a name change from the fortune teller to improve his luck in finding a wife”. Also I had no idea the Mazu festival existed until I saw CZcamsrs covering it.
A lot of countries in Asia hate Japan except Taiwan haha. I think Taiwan being governed by Japan was shitty but not as shitty as when the KMT were in their dictatorship phase. So people like my grandparents who lived under both rules see Japan rule as ok comparatively. Then the generations after the Japanese left only have the KMT as comparison.
12:26 Another secret, Taiwan garbage trucks play that music (The Maiden's Prayer, Op. 4 by Badarzewska-Baranowska). When I visited family my mom told me "ice cream truck!" and I believed it as a kid :(
And Beethoven’s - Für Elise.
That's true! I don't drink alcohol anymore but I used to really like Taiwanese
You are amazing. You covered almost everything about your subject in one nice motor cycle ride! Very efficient, I’m impressed and I actually enjoyed the awesome ride with you 😂💪
thank you for watching!
13:01 The swimming thing. A lot of reasons for that, riptides aren't one of them. Rip currents are very rare here, although they can happen at some of the shallower beaches (mostly in the north). And it wasn't so much a threat from China, but a threat from Taiwan. The military dictatorship forbade swimming in a lot of places for fear that locals might swim out to a Chinese boat, or maybe all the way to China, and defect or give military secrets, etc. So that didn't help. As for the modern era, the west coast beaches are amazing, but polluted, or at least perceived to be polluted (who wants to swim on the white sand beach in front of a plastic factory?) and east coast beaches often have obnoxious shore breaks. North coast beaches tend to be pretty nice. If you look at photos from 50 years ago though, you'll see the beaches full of swimmers. Not just beaches but also places like shimen reservoir, etc. But over time more and more places were closed, and people were dissuaded from swimming. Now swimming is gradually making it's way back into the culture, despite the major public school swimming program being cancelled in 2016. These days if you go to a popular beach, it's only young children swimming, and their parents stand on the side complaining that they didn't learn swimming when they were kids.
As soon as a beach in Taiwan becomes popular, swimming becomes illegal and you are only allowed be in knee deep water. Sometimes there are exceptions if you bring your SUP board
loved your video from mexico
Nice bike, Honda Rebel
Anecdotally, swimming and beaches are not a huge part of Taiwanese culture could have something to do with that there has been sea ban in different periods of time in Taiwan practiced by local governors.
I've heard people talking about this
For Taiwan being an island, it doesn't feel beachy at all. Throws me off
Another reason I believe is that Taiwan's education system is oriented towards academic advancement. Therefore, they consider swimming to be unimportant and do not need to spend much time teaching it.

Cool video! Would love to have another list, because I'm sure that list would be super long lol
Good stuff! I'm sure you can come up with another list or 2...
Loved the video on the bike, even with the muffled video! Would like to see more of the road or the path ahead even if that meant putting the other camera in shot rather than the bike. Perhaps the uncut bike footage could also land on Patreon?
Yea I have to figure out a way to mount the camera so it's pointing up a little. It's hard because I can't see what the camera is looking at when I have my helmet on
Hi Prozziie, the way you washing your lovely bike seems not good enough. Check some video and find your modify way. In my opinion, Using high presure air gun to move out the water inside the jointer and under the rubber cover, it should help preventing from rusty. Adding chain oil regularly could help the bike maintaining in silence and smooth situation.
Very insightful
Yes, Taiwanese like Japan so much that Grace, or whoever is doing the subtitle, snuck in a Taiwanese Japanese (chotto matte) in the subtitle when Prozzie was talking about learning Japanese as second language.
My husband says that when he was in school, the students would go to the temple to pray for the knowledge to pass a test. After the test then they would return the knowledge to the teacher. 😂
I think it's time you should learn!
The thing about swimming, my dad had a friend who went swimming and got flushed away by the water and died. It would've been outside in the nature somewhere where the government never hadn't up prohibitive barricades in the 70s. I assume he wasn't the first one so I imagine the people there can be weary/just don't have a culture of swimming, unless it's in indoor pools
Thank you so much!
Thanks Grace!
U told the truth.
Just came across you channel today. Will visit Taiwan in two weeks for 12 days and I'm so excited about it :) Good to hear the Taiwanese spreak average English in general. My Chinese is not what it used to be. ;)
@@leonhoitinga9032 good luck! Hope you enjoy it
Taiwan has conducted a bilingual nation(which is English)policy since 2017. So the education system be like teaching in English. Although the effect seems not good and academics criticized it but many few decades later you will find taiwan like Singapore
Beach culture would be good to attract tourists, even if it is not native
Thank you for watching!
A vlog on the Rebel, nice.
In Taiwan, they say their language is "Mandarin", in the PRC they say theirs is "Chinese". If you look at the U.S. government websites most of them put "mandrine" as a language option.
No, they do not. Taiwanese say their official language is "national language". And the PRC says Putonghua. Where do you get your ideas from?
10:54 They grew up in TW, but are still han DNA. Very different than Filipina or Thai or example. You can see the skin color difference. Many Taiwanese are lighter skinned than white people.
或者誰願意當您的乘客?not only Allan, should be more 😂
Prozzie: Now on Walkie Talkie!
that's exactly what it sounds like haha. Or like an airline pilots microphone
@@jfc4609 haha we will melt together. I can't handle this heat either
lol I just filmed a video the other day, and I also have a whole portion on the swimming thing 🥲
haha damn. Great minds think alike. I have a video I wanna shoot with you next week-ish by the way!
The superstitious reasons for many Taiwanese not knowing how to swim are true but also, historically, many young people were just too busy studying-including going to bushibans and the idea of swimming and swimming lessons were seen as superfluous. This has changed considerably and more and more young children now know how to swim or are taking swimming classes and many modern parents now see the safety value in ensuring their child can swim.
Hi
Did you need to get a new driving license with tests etc. or could you transfer your Canadian one? I'm wondering if I were to move to Taiwan if I had to get a new one. Just applied for their golden visa .. excited to see if it works out.
My drivers license expired in Canada a long time ago, so I had to get a Taiwanese one
@@Prozzie They expire in Canada ??? That's wild. Did you need to take driving lessons in Taiwan or was it just paper work?
I don’t know where your from, but US licenses expire too.
You can get your International Drivers Permit, which are only valid for one year, extended in Taiwan.
Alternatively, you can exchange your license for a Taiwanese one without taking a driving test.
I’m still on the fence on which option I’m going to do.
@@jeffb.140 haha yes they expire in Canada. I had to do a drivers test to get my license, and some people have to take classes before they can take the test
I've heard that they have a pretty good surfing community there.
yep! It's not huge but it exists
Is that square on the ground only for scooters or are bikes allowed too? Coz I noticed you weren't going into it.
the square is for scooters and bikes that have white license plates (250cc or under). Bigger motorcycles like mine don't have to use them
I think there are still some other features you may notice. For example, Taiwanese girls don't like to get tanned. They try every possible way to block themselves from the sun. Another thing is that girls prefer white guys over black ones. No offense, it's not about racism, but they think babies are prettier if mixed with white. Taiwanese students value education more than anything else, so you will find students often go to cram school and stay there until 9 o'clock or even 10 o'clock; it's the norm. Lastly, they usually don't value privacy, so they often like to chat or gossip about anything, anywhere, anytime.
Love the moto vlogs. Would be even better with better audio, but i could still understand. Can't you copy the old advchina setup?
I tried plugging the microphone directly into my camera but it doesn't let me change the gain so it sounded really blown out like a walkie talkie. I'll figure something out
@@Prozzie your friend tkyo Sam also seems to have it sorted
Sloacum da man.
I think another reason for not going to the beach is from your other reason, Taiwanese hate the heat, and sun is so vicious, we will get sun burn in 20 minutes. 😂
🙂🙂
Poe divination's accurate writing is 跋桮, POJ(Pe̍h-ōe-jī) writing is poa̍h-poe.
By the way, 跋筊(poa̍h-kiáu) is means gambling.
Many Taiwanese's ancestral origins are from Fujian.
There is a saying The rough translation is Fujianese particularly believe in witchcraft.
When many Fujianese immigrated to Taiwan, they faced severe challenges, like aboriginal counterattacks (even if the Fujianese also fought each other), miasma plague, malarial mosquitoes, venomous snakes, and government exploitation.
Let Taiwanese can only help themselves and pray to gods for protection.
(Taiwan's plain also has aboriginal people, called "Pingpu people".)
By the way, East Asia did not prohibit same-sex sexual practice in ancient. (although also do not support it.)
Fujian in ancient also had one god named Hu Tianbao (Tu'er Shen) to protect same-sex lovers.
In ancient Fujian had a custom called 契兄弟, it's a relationship similar to male homosexuality.
(Taiwanese Hokkien scolds women who have an affair with other men, often using 討客兄, actually the correct writing is 討契兄.)
It is Western Christian culture that opposes same-sex sexual practice.
(A Traditional Story of Taiwan) has one episode named 兔兒神弄姻緣 are talks about Tu'er Shen.
It's also on CZcams. But this drama ended in heterosexuality......
u should watch "周處除三害" that's how I feel about religions in Taiwan...
From personal experience, I find Taiwanese more superstitious than devote religious people. With swimming/beaches, I find many Asian city woman avoid the sun so going to the local beach is not at the top of their recreational list. Also, I find the ratio of swimming pools per capita in Taipei is way lower than what you find in a major North American city. Most cities in the west, u can just walk or take a short drive to the local indoor/outdoor pool and go swimming anytime.
Forgot to mention, tw people will spend money/time and go out of their way to go spend time at a hot spring/resort even in the summer months. Anything remotely considered healthy, Taiwanese will drop money for it.
Great insight...thanks for sharing. I didn't think the microphone sounded bad at all, considering where you placed it.
haha. I think you might be the only one who thinks so. It wasn't so much the placement but the crappy camera. It doesn't let me change the gain on the microphone
@Prozzie what camera and mic are you using?
@@AllenRReid insta360 one (I don’t recommend it) and a rode lav mic

Taiwanese people don’t know how to swim? And they have superstition …. “water ghost” etc etc? 😂 What kind of Taiwanese have you met? I’m Taiwanese and I’ve NEVER EVER heard of that superstition. As to “don’t know how to swim”? I mean we are no Michael Phelps, but swimming is part of the PE that everyone has to pass, and most schools have swimming pools. Have you ever visited one of those public swimming pools / sports clubs? Swimming classes for kids are always full. What’s true is that beaches are not really the recreational destinations, probably because of the reason you described.
I'm trying to ram the reasons home why Taiwanese are generally in favor of Japan while Koreans generally adopt an attitude of anti-japanese now that both were once ruled by Japanese.
After ww2 South Korea has become an independent country while Taiwan was taken over by Kmt that had given the most important resources and positions to its followers from China and treated local Taiwanese as the second -rate citizens in fact. They had ruled Taiwan with iron fists for the first 40 years. As a result most Taiwanese prefer Japanese ruling to Kmt ruling.
The second reason has been the fear of being attacked by China for more than 7 decades and recently they have sent jets and battleships to surround Taiwan trying to strike terror into people in Taiwan. It seems US and Japan are most likely to extend helping hands if Taiwan is forced to defend themselves against the invasion.
Taiwan's beaches suck, and the water quality around the island is disgusting.
never felt this Taiwanese in my entire life lol
Looks like yall has lost 20 pounds or more.
Allen is buying views for his channel. Don't associate with him.
Expensive, boring , mediocre cultural output. Essentially the Canada of Asia.
6-Taiwan will reunify with Mainland China in near future.
