Theme Song by Hello Control: bit.ly/hellocontrol - Krátké a kreslené filmy
My insticual thoughts:
- Red is anguish.
- Purple felt like she was having an epiphany.
- The blue felt sad. But like a distressed sadness. It makes me think of mister freeze staring at Nora frozen in the tank that's keeping her alive.
- Green just looks like night vision.
- Bright green Nothing.

There’s a book I always recommend to up and coming cinematographers titled “If Its Purple, Someone’s Gonna Die- The Power of Color in Visual Storytelling” by Patti Bellantoni. I read it years ago and its change my whole world view the use of color and hues of color I can use to invoke feelings in my films. And not just in lighting but in art design as well.
What’s the book name
@@vijayantonysureshkumar2842 "If Its Purple, Someone’s Gonna Die- The Power of Color in Visual Storytelling” by Patti Bellantoni.
Excellent. Thanks
I was thinking of how I could incorporate color via lights into my shots and this was absolutely perfect. It absolutely does make you think more deeply about your characters and conveys things without saying them straight out. 10 years I've been watching you guys and you still amaze me.
I love this kind of video. Creating an emotional response is my biggest goal as a filmmaker and diving deeper into more abstract tools such as color is super useful. I learned a lot from your though process here Ryan!
I always love subtle colours and tones in movies, especially when it's beyond the usual "saturated or desaturated". It's always a nice touch.
So many ideas and inspiration from this episode. Thanks y’all.
I have watched this channel for years and this video makes me excited for the future of it
Definitely do more of these types of videos. These are great and really getting to certain aspects of filmmaking that intrigue me. In terms of what emotions certain colors elicit. Another thing that interested me is the types of clothes characters wear
Have josh with you next time to also have his input on why he did things the way he did and compare your feelings to yours.
Loved the video
It would be interesting to have this as a series. Have Josh explain how he feels with the emotion of the color and why he lit it that way, and then give your input and how It makes you feel.
@11:01 the red bg and green face reminded me of Sergio Argentos Suspiria. Lots of hard contrast lighting that really felt unsettling. Also great use of red in Panos Cosmatos' Mandy . Specifically the red, ominous forest scene always comes to mind.Brilliant use of color there
I really liked this! I paused the video as soon as the image came up, articulated my own feelings and then heard yours, and it was just really interesting to see, and feel, and kinda just explore in a way I don't often do anymore :)
I thought he would say red as in *film riot*
This was awesome!!! You guys should make more of these types of videos
The colors have that sneaky way of making us feel something visually. Can I say it is part of the spirit of an image?
Very true. Even if you’re not a filmmaker, you notice it subconsciously, and it just makes it that much better.
Well said! Love this

The way you described the red totally reminded me of Taxi Driver when the rear lights of his car are shining on his face.
The most interesting thing about this test is the vertical light position in her eye reflections, for the green/blue tinted shots makes her very snake/alien like. Cool effect.
The problem is, you used a lot of shadows and mixed them with a black background. That’s always going to give an ominous mood to something like bright red. But put it against a white background and you could have felt differently. Especially if the face hadn’t been do shrouded in shadowing.
An obvious example would be how frequently red is used to denote happiness, love and romantic passion. Valentine’s advertising is absolutely full of that colour. Much more so than pink (even though pink is typically more associated with romance). But you generally won’t find much if it with a black background, unless for erotic signalling.
There is also the psychological connection between masculine red and feminine pink. It can affect a setting differently, depending on the character’s gender and what type of actions they are undertaking. For example, a racing car in Ferrari-style red will feel more aggressive and competitive.
I LOVE playing with color because it is so subjective. Great way to tell non-traditional stories, with a female protagonist or psychological or almost supernatural elements.
I really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really enjoyed this episode....very much. Thank you film riot. I feel like I just received great news on a payday Friday leading up two a three-day weekend with a bonus check.
Great episode. Yes please make more like this 🙏
❤🎬
Colors always enthusiasts me up
Thanks for that episode
Merry Xmas merry Christmas
this was my thesis topic and I approve this youtube video!
Color is subjective but also intertwined in social and cultural norms making it objective within the context of cultural barriers. A singe color can have many emotional definitions positive and negative (red= love, rage...etc). Using it in Film is to not to have the viewer say woah look at those colors they make me feel xyz, but rather to support the emotion of a film or scene and strengthen what is being portrayed by the setting and actor's performances. Bladerunner 2049 which was also mentioned in my thesis utilises the color yellow which director Denis Villeneuve used in his own way not typical to the color yellow. The color yellow was used to signify enlightenment whenever K (Ryan Gosling) stumbled upon new information driving the story further the color yellow was present. Villeneuve also mentions yellow as a symbol for journey and change much like the color of the yellow brick road in Wizard of Oz. If you didn't catch the meaning or why he used it you still understood the film but it was there to support the storytelling.
This is the one! Great information I like this experimental approach a lot and is really what youtube filmmaking is missing.
Wes Craven gave Freddy a red and green striped sweater because he read that those two colors together are the hardest for the eyes & brain to interpret.
Inspirational videos especially for music video thank you for sharing with us
Your videos are the biggest inspiration in life
I really love the red look, but the main issue I always have, is that it doesn't look as good in camera due to my camera's sensor and the youtube compressing doesn't do justice either.
The fact that we are capable to distinguish colour in an evolutionary sense automatically implies a profundity being attached to colour that is beyond our reason and deeply woven in the nature of us being well us.
Once again Film Riot University with food for the the film brain. ♥ you guys!
It would be interesting to see how this applies to different skin colours and tones, and how you’d adapt the lightIng for scenes featuring actors with differing attributes.
Love those NanLites! No more need for that "Saber" plugin
A great episode, thanx.
Color in wardrobe and sets can also have an emotional impact. And the emotion you feel can change depending on the context. For example, red can make you feel uneasy in one scene and joyful in another.
This makes me excited
I really dug the intro of this video! The music was spectacular.
Did u find the track , if yes plz tell me ????
I have always used dissonance in my audio and have used it in my photography but (for whatever reason) have never thought of doing it with my color palettes until this video...
FinallY I get a recommendation of my favourite channel!
11:50 Incongruence - "A humanistic psychology concept developed by Carl Rogers which suggests that unpleasant feelings can result from a discrepancy between our perceived and ideal self." Think "Pumped up Kicks" where the lyrics are a complete tonal shift from the melody. Don't know why I never thought of applying to film until now.
Dude.. imagine a horror movie that’s bright & saturated just add an fitting story to it, and people will genuinely get so confused & feel uncomfortable when the unexpected happens in the middle of a what looks like a bright happy scene. Add some happy music in the middle of a brutal bloody murder scene. Maybe there’s movies out that is like this, idk 😂
check out the birthday scene in Parasite. It's debatable if its horror or thriller but it matches your description.
I really liked the red backround with the green face. Remindes me to the musicvideos from the weeknd
Love it!!
thank you
Fantastic!
Thank You
whats with the flicker in the background lights?
*Into song sounds like T E N E T*
*smashes through wall* u mean the plan by travis scott
@@caseygecko yes
Kinda Sounds like valorant
Yea, feels synthwavy
What is the first horror film that used desaturation for an emotion? When I watch old Grindhouse films or 80's horror I don't see that. So I wonder where it all started because it's ubiquitous now.
Mad Max Fury Road is very saturated, but I don't find that world inviting at all.
True!!!!
Paul w. S. Anderson called the Green hue used in event horizon a hint to an uneasy feeling.
Lov that show!
Intro music is EPIC 👾💥🎸
The Wraith - Tokyo Rose
I love the red look
The blue gave me a sci-fi/fantasy vibe... Like looking at an energy portal (done with the Infinity VFX pack.. 😉) or a worm hole, like Stargate style.
Is the flicker in the pink background wash coming from the CZcams compression or the actual light?
yes. exactly my question as well.
I also saw Green Face + Red BG as something off. And that's great... It also kind of points me in the direction that the character is not human. There's no emotion there, maybe an Android.
Now I want to see a super saturated dystopian sci fi film
You should check out "slice of life" a short film inspired by blade runner and a ton of the 80s sci fi. Its free on CZcams and its fantastic.
blade runners a banger
Blade runner 2049. Even better than the original imo
You're a dangerous man, Ryan
Intro music/theme name Please???? Its epic.😍 anyone ?
Would be great to see things like this with dark skinned models as well
0:01 can someone tell me the type of that music. like how should i search for something like that. what are the keywords that matches
synthwave and retrowave are good terms to search for.
@@jerriecan or similar to stranger things lol :)
IMHO short side lighting does affect the perception along with the colors (and her expression, and may be music if added to it)
If I had money to spare I’d buy many of these so I can do cool stuff like what you showed
I love that Emily just sat there and being lit by random colors
That’s not Emily.
I don't think that's Emily
Hi,how can I contact the company
Hating is an emotion too
If you are Not considering color on your story telling prosees you are no covering all your bases. This is fundamental. It adds more flavor to the soup.
Is it possible to intern for you guys? I live in the DFW area and am desperately trying to get more experience or just learn any way I can during COVID
Good luck man!

Estaría bueno que pusieras subtítulos en español porque no entiendo nada sobre inglés
Yay
Red look like in a sub when there running I silent Or at the red light district or red alert purple does remind me of sci-fi also maybe like Ghost in the shell blade runner like you said Blue could be like a concert party scene club or maybe the Terminator movie predator vibe The the saturation look remind me old film or a horror film vibe Or I could be some kind of weird moonlight eclipse thing or in the forest moonlight hitting the trees The green reminds me of Eileen Stasior for being abducted or matrix
Ryan likes red. Confirmed, he is a devil who guards hell as his part time job.
Red background with the green made me think of the boat on the chocolate river from the original Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory
Hey it's such a nice thought to have a donate button. But it's nowhere to be seen. There is a problem with it.
When i see red I automatically think redtu..... yes, film riot! I think about film riot
10:44 made me think of Star Wars immediately when they're in the red room with Snoke.
When you brought blue up I thought of somthing holy.
6:36 she hulk 😂
👏👏👏
Blue looks like someone being pessimistic
Here is a short that uses color like in this video: czcams.com/video/WK6WOMkMESc/video.html
😍😍
Is that his sister at the start of the video? It's been so long I can't remember her name. If that is her, that lady is no longer the kiddo that was killing us with her adorableness back in the day.
I'm pretty sure it's not Emily, but wouldn't be surprised if they're related.
I think the green might look more dangerous (at least to me) because it looks kinda like the wicked witch of the west
Don't lie, you just put the eggcrate on it to reflect the look of the imperial hallways from Star Wars.
Red and Yellow means KANSAS CITY CHIEEEEEEFS!
Go CHIEEEEFS!!!

Could've sworn I made this comment earlier, but I do not see it. Check out this article on how humans perceive colors based on whether or not they have a word for it.
www.sciencealert.com/humans-didn-t-see-the-colour-blue-until-modern-times-evidence-science
And note that after black and white, red is the first color to enter every language spoken on earth. That is proof that it is the best color of all.
