Great idea! You also might be able to get the milk crates from a grocery store, restaurant, hospital, or other care facility. My uncle did that. Sometimes, the businesses have to send them back, but not always. Worth checking.
Don't forget the free stuff you can find on streets giving away stuff. There have been wonderful chairs (not stuffed), and bookshelves I have found, in addition to a great brass bed frame. Garage sales are interesting looks into Americana and some nice pots with lids and china sets, spoons, lamps, rugs all can be discovered.

First lay the wood down where you'd like it to be. then slide the L- brackets in between the top and the crates sections. Then mark the back end of the bracket against the wood. Flip over the wood onto a stable surface and screw the brackets down . With the brackets on ,Now reset the top in place, and begin drilling the bottom end of the bracket into thecrate. and your done.If you'd like you can paint the L- bracket to match the crate to make it less noticeable.

I made a huge one of these for my boys room years ago. But I just lined each Shelf with foam core and left them open. It was great for their stuff. They were older, so they didn't climb on them.
