Ludwig Göransson on Tenet's Film Score and Working with Christopher Nolan | The Breakdown

  • Ludwig Göransson has had a hand in some of the most innovative and influential film and TV scores of this decade - Black Panther, The Mandalorian, and now Tenet, the latest sci-fi thriller from Christopher Nolan.
“I saw Batman Begins when I was 18 or 19, in Sweden in the movie theater, and was just mindblown when I saw that movie,” Göransson tells Rolling Stone. “I had never heard a score in a blockbuster having so much room and really feeling like a character of the movie.”
Working with Nolan in the shadow of his collaborations with Hans Zimmer was a daunting task, but as Göransson explains in The Breakdown, he was able to craft the enigmatic score for Tenet based on audience expectations for what modern movie music is supposed to sound like.

Tenet score is a masterpiece. Critics and the academy (who did not give it an Oscar nomination) will come to realize it was a pivot point in score music a few years down the road, when many other composers will try to sound like this.

Agree. The soundtrack is the best thing and most important part in the movie. Without Ludwig score, the movie will be really bland cause Tenet is not Nolan's usual best. However, really looking forward for his next work with Nolan.

Indeed. You know it when you realize that some of the "sound effects" in the movie are actually bits and pieces from the soundtrack. Incredible. For example, the opening scene orchestra warm up sound is from the soundtrack.

true! And many times the soundtrack matches every motion, like a punch, or a kick, or a car crash. It was thrilling and incredible. It's obviouse the sound trach has distinctive style from Hans Zimmer, but I'd totally agree that Ludwig draws new blood to this film, and it feels very refreshing. The music played a huge part in this movie. It set the atmosphere and defined characters. Meeting Neil and Protagonist are a great example of this occurring. Neil’s soundtrack sounds sharp, smart and even a bit mysterious. It plays well into Robert’s character. Whereas the Protagonists sounds rough, dark. With the use of slightly distorted guitar at times. Which helps convey to us viewers and listeners that the Protagonist is more of action. The soundtrack is brilliantly composed. If I could ever get a chance to experience the movie for the first time again I would take it without a doubt. Art portrayed through cinema.

@Jacob Ballard Yes there is a new element Ludwig brings. He has an R&B background & he excels at creating & manipulating sounds that are intriguing to the ear. He once said (back in 2012) that he derives inspiration from the music on the radio & not other film composers, because that’s what people want to hear ... and it works!
      But here’s why Hans Zimmer is a better fit for Christopher Nolan;
what Hans excels at is creating sonic worlds, he brings grandeur, scale, and psychological depth to his music like no other composer, & that is exactly why his music compliments Nolan’s movies perfectly.
Ludwig’s style is more suited with Ryan Coogler in my opinion.
In the end, both are geniuses, its just a matter of different taste & style.

The first time I watch a movie, I am swept up (assuming it is a good movie) by the story and the movie as a whole. but on second viewing, I notice the OST, the blocking, he writing, the transitions, the cuts, etc. There are so many little things that go into manipulating your emotions, it is amazing how they all can affect you as a whole.

I always thought there was a synth motif in Tenet very reminiscent of the main riff in "Bleed" by Meshuggah.
Now I see a Meshuggah signature 8-string guitar behind him and it kind of makes sense 😀

Really cool to watch him go over the process. Sadly, I couldn't enjoy the score in the cinema because of how jarringly loud the film was... Interesting how he mentions here that Chris had the volume turned up to 11 whenever they listened to the first CD.

I just want him to say "James Bond Guitar" does anyone else get that vibe in a couple sections?
That's my best description of Tenet by the way, "Nolan James Bond movie"

I love how creative he is, not just musically but also how much he REALLY wants the music to reflect the film. Not in a sort of generalized way but really represent the story.
In Tenent you didn’t NEED to have gone this deep. No one would have noticed if they didn’t have this to compare with it. You could have done something super basic, like just having some reverse sounds, and ticking clock sounds. Very obvious. But he really went deep in doing it in a thought out sophisticated way. You really have to understand story and film to do that well.
In Oppenheimer it’s really exemplified in “can you hear the music”. The tempo changes, switching from straight and triplet time etc is such genius! Again one could easily have approached this really straight and obvious. But for me that is a genius idea, it really captures everything about the situation. The higher level anxiety and emotion seriousness of the political stakes and the threat of total annihilation. Then there’s the personal stakes that come from being responsible for building this thing and the internal anxiety of how dangerous it is, (even to themselves (blowing themselves up/radiation leak), and the highly emotional internal conflicted anxiety of knowing this terrible weapon that has the possibility of destroying the world yet continuing anyway believing it’s still essential that he builds it, the anxiety in the race to accomplish it before the Nazi’s, as well as representing the atomic particles both visually and in nature.
This is why he’s one of the most inspiring role models any film composer should look to. Producing good music is one thing, but what truly makes a film composer is contributing to the storytelling language of the film in as many in as dimensions as you can.
