I'm a member of your harmonica web site, but this helped me understand the blues scale instantly. Awesome. I'm a blues guitarist so this instantly made sense to me. Been trying to correlate the two for weeks until I found this AWESOME. So jazzed!
I love my harmonica clarinet music. Thanks for all the lessons & guidance. Keep it up guys!
Many many thanks for this straightforward lesson. For the first time I am able to produce the Blue sound!
This is so Beneficial, in my early days of learning. I guess this is gonna take weeks to master, waht being a learner. Thank You so Much.
thank you so much for this awesome lesson
Great lesson, easy to follow, great to grow from, nice job!!!
The basics nice one JP. Will be chasing your tutorials now
thank you JP this is really helpful :-)
Yes, very informative!! Thank you!!
Accidentally bought a tremolo harp (honer echo), that was the only one avaliable in my local store. I love it, but now i want your Honer Special 20. Hope I can learn to bend as well. Thanks for your work, I love all you did for us. Ed from Italy.
Just awesome... Thanks a lot.
This is exactly the basic to learning blues, and then improvising. I never found this anywhere else. I am happy to have found this. I am a self-learnt harmonica player, but play other instrument as main, so can feel the importance of this scale to playing any blues.
Thank you so much.
im a advanced blues guitar player
but i recently got a C harp harmonica, and Im trying to learn it.
Can your give me your facebook or something,so we can share experiences?
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
A lot of blues scale videos start going up the scale, JP has got a point starting backwards, I found starting out it was easier to start going down the scale then up.
Yes it is because we don't need to bend immediately, so going down giving us a firm head start.
But after finding on other teachers, I myself believe practicing going up is better way to practice my ambush used to get a clean blue third...
ありがとう!Yes. i grab my C harmonica!!
Excellent lesson, thank you much.
Excellent, thanks!
Great lesson, thank you! What harmonica are you using?
You are a great teacher! I will never be able to bend a note but I will take your advice and a little bit every day.
Great help
Thank you very much! Good video!
Good man! You hit my wavelength from the start
Glad to hear it!
Invaluable!
Thank You!
Great tutorial bro. Appreciate the exercise.
Right on Simon!
Simple explanation thanks
LOVELY....
Do you have a video teaching how to do the bend on notes?
Wow (-: (y) thank you so much for a great lesson !!!
thank you so much for this video its such a straight forward lesson but I'm having trouble getting the bending notes to sound like yours
Right on Rodger. Glad you liked the vid! Here is my free lesson on bending:
www.harmonica.com/how-to-bend-harmonica/
would do a lesson on the song "Broken Window Serenade by Whiskey Myers, Cody Cannon plays a harmonica and guitar".
Brilliant well explained.
Glad it was helpful!
JP have you got a video which shows how to remove the scabs from my lip blisters from the harmonica holes?
HA! Get a plastic comb and ditch the wooden one. Work through it, scabs and all.
Ewwwww hahahaha
Thanks! Very helpful!!!
You're welcome!
Great lesson JP - what make and model harmonica are you using? It sounds great!
Jason Murphy I believe he uses a Hohner Special 20.
Liked and subscribed!
excellent
Hi JP, I've been "playing" harmonica for almost two months. Your videos were among the first I came across and I've watched quite a few (along with some by other players). I try to practice everyday and feel I'm learning at a pretty nice pace. I've been working on your blues scale. The hardest part for me is going from 4 blow to 3 bend to 2 draw-especially from 3 bend to 2 draw. I just can't get a nice crisp transition from 3 to 2. Any tips you can give me. I really like the enthusiasm you put into your teaching. Thanks
did you ever get it figured out??
hey just a question - are you supposed to tongue each note? or just slur the whole scale? Do you tongue even when you start to play very fast (like eighth or sixteenth notes)?
Allen how you do the bending ..? Thanks
dankeschön
i have diatonic E Harmonica .its ok for playing this
Yes 👍 but C is easier
Instead of -2 draw, can I just do a 3 blow? it's pretty much the same key on the c harmonica
+SuperTopmaster I cant do a 2 draw :(
Me to I have difficulties with it, in the beginning I thought it was for the cheap harmonica, but now I see other people have the same problem.
I can get a similar sound to JP from the -2 just if I bend a bit the note. Simply drawing it makes almost no sound.
By avoiding the 3 draw to the 3 blow, you are beginning a bad habit! The 2 draw is very important in learning the blues! Check out his video on blowing and drawing single notes.
The actual reason for using the 2 draw is that on 2 draw you can do throat warble and the same cant be done on 3 blow!
what is the best way to get that singled out the note ? meaning if I go to blow a 6, the notes around it play also. (5 and 7)
Try pursing your lips like you are going to whistle. Works for me
Great Lession. Im way off the speed at the moment.
...and one more question: when you move from hole to hole down or up the scale, how is done by moving the lips vs. moving the harmonica? Thx again
Bob Mowbray I'm asking just the same!
Bob Mowbray move your whole head
Move the harmonica
It's done by moving the harmonica
It is a bit fast 4 a utube lesson, but the basics r here, thx,
Right on!
thanks
Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Hello JP Allen.
Could You explain how to do -4` etc... that u teach in that video, but showing you doing, cause how is in english it is not easy to understand what you're doing. It become easy seeing doing. Thank You!
The hardest part is 2 to 3half bend. Practice this thinking the song Spoonful.
How do you do that Shuffle so fast?Is this just practice , Practice. practice.Thank You Tony.
Yes! Everything on a musical instrument comes down to putting the blood, sweat and tears in!
Ufff ...super
what kind of harmonica you using here?? hohner? i can't get my 2 to sound like yours
Try a Hohner Special 20...works 4 me, just have to slightly 'twist/tweek' the 2 draw a little and it will ring out !
Como tocar pantera cor de rosa gaita em do
Ben suonato ma visto che sono all'inizio x me è bello da sentire ma quando e se ci riuscirò x me sarebbe un grande traguardo raggiunto
Does this apply to all harmonica keys. If so, could some one give me a reason or a link to explain. How a d why. Thank you jp. And thank you youtube
Because all diatonic harmonicas notes are spaced similar. It is just on a different pitch. So, if you play on one, you could play on any.
Not sure why but I could not hear your video
What's your opinion on a hohner special 20 key of g. Its what I bought
If it's anything like my hohner special 20 in key of C it's a great sounding harmonica.
is this all done in just 1 breath?
nope... without breath
sim gostei
What about the breathing? i can't draw this much without being breathless D:
+Eliel Pinto Me too ha ha the pain of us newbies. its been 7 months how are you doing?
+Scott M Same situash here. I just started, how about you?
Aditya Nayak I had played some last year blew out some reeds and just got a new instrument. just practicing the scale and notes. Its tough
I guess a good technique is to exhale also from the nose when you have a blow note.
You don't need to exhale or blow very hard. You must learn to breath from your diaphragm. Which is below your stomach. look in a mirror and take a deep breath and if the air went to your lungs. wrong your stomach should expand... You can find these answers on GOOGLE SEARCH. RELAX and practice the breath control and then go to HOW do you hold a harmonica...
Where is the wobble or vibrato comning from say on the 2 at the end. Moving the harmonica? Help somebody!
that's what I want to know too. I'm 100% sure it's all breath control, but I would love tips on how to do it exactly
Toy can make the vibrato with your hands
Can you give us the entrance riff? Please
I can’t through in 2 😿
Hey JP, I can't find "blues in the vault" can you link please.
Here you go Rennie: www.harmonica.com/go/blues
Ha! you have to pay for it; there's always a catch isn't there?
I don't know why I can't play like you do in every video with my Harmonica, Maybe because it's A not C ?
yes if you are playing an A harmonica in second position then you are playing it in the key of E whereas in the video they are playing a C harmonica in second position which is the key of G so you are essentially playing the same scale in a different key
You're simply using a different key. Other than that, you're golden.
+Thomas Groff What's the 2nd position? Is it holes 2-6 on the harmonica? Does that mean that to play G blues you can only play along with a C harmonica using only holes 2-6? Silly question i know but i'm a newbie and haven't even got my harmonica yet, i'm waiting for it to be delivered.
1:45 don't thank me
What is bend to half step? I dont think i even have the right harp because mine doesnt sound like yours at all :/ Mugig Harmonica 10 Holes
He uses a C harp blues Harmonika
2 draw on my harmonica doesnt work
dang j p I didn't know u were married I thought u had a harem out there aloha
would this work on a D harmonic ?
+Michael Daza Bending might be harder, from what I understand.
💪🤠🦅
My draw 2 sounds different then yours. Blow 3 is just a bit sharp
same problem 2 draw is different
Hi Guys. I have had the same problem, then I have been watching the following harp lesson video "PRECISE BENDING" the teachers name is "Matej TataMata". For me as a new beginner, he is explaining why bending on hole 2 and 3 are the most difficult one to the multiple possible bending in the right way. The lesson might help you too to get the right bending sound out of hole 2 and 3.
Couldn't we sub the 2 hole draw with 3 blow to achieve the same scale
Yes, you can always sub 3 and -2.
How to do -4'
Bending
How do I bend notes?
There are alot of lessons on CZcams. Google "How to bend on the harmonica" :)
Must notes to these correspond to ?
G F D Db C Bb G
I like what you’re explaining but what if you’re not at the level where you can bend and fold and do all the yoga stuff with your mouth
czcams.com/video/AAQYcBZqYrU/video.html
Huzzah ..
Possibly stupid question here:
Why Don't harmonica makers produce direct blues scale harmonicas?
Wouldn't it be a lot easier to play blues if the scale was directly built in the harmonica?
From my knowledge they do make "minor key" harmonicas now but in the past harmonica manufacturers thought the harp should be treated as a classical instrument and did not respect the blues genre they saw bending as a defect essentially lee oskar forced them to change that position.
I believe Brendan Power makes one tuned like this. You can check out his website.
Is this the same as a a harmonica?
Yes, same on all keys.
2draw is the same as 3blow
Yes, Roger that! You can always substitute 3 for -2. But later on there are many advantages of -2 (you can bend in and out of it and add vibrato.)
is this the class room for learning math and not take meth
NUUU
Блин , а перевести и по русски написать слабо ?
But music is the universal language!
shit that beginning is so annoying to be honest
