Growing up, my parents always got me to empty the diswasher, hoover the house and my Mum taught me how to use machines to cut the grass and she taught me how to iron and though I didn't see it at the time, it was about preparing me for when I live on my own and have my own place. When I moved out for Uni and working abroad, I used those skills for myself, so though you don't see it, you'll realise why your parents make you do that and you learn some new skills for yourself, so whenever I come home for family visits, I always volunteer to hoover, empty the dishwasher and help around the house, to show how much I appreciate my family and to show that I appreciate the skills they taught me.
When my son was 14-15 he said I never did anything for him. I showed him exactly what that meant. I did nothing for him. No lunch money, no meals, laundry, taking him places. It took about four days to completely change. He apologized profusely and said he never realized all that I did. We never had a problem after that.
Wow what a toxic family taking advantage of the mom like that. I am glad she finally stood up for herself and was done being treated like the family servant. She did the right thing by standing up for herself and finally setting boundaries and I am so happy that he dad, the son and daughter apologized to the mom and became a lot nicer and more appreciative towards her. We all make mistakes and sometimes we just need a second chance
