Yeah all the dedicated thrash fans had very bad things to say about the Black album when it came out.. thought it was trash and ruined the entire history of metallica.. that album and everything after simply has to be appreciated as a different genre and essentially a new band direction, definitely a "non-Mustaine" direction. Fans like to hold on to bands too tightly, fans have to let the band be more free to go into new sounds and then take the new sounds in, let the musicians be creative... the drag for metallica fans especially though was that the change was taken as a deliberate attempt to go mainstream which dedicated underground music fans hate the idea of, the watering down of heavy & intense & complex music to be more palatable for a wider audience. Whereas pantera came along and deliberately said "every new album will absolutely be heavier and more intense than the last one".
