I was so pleased that Tallis was included in the wedding service, it's such a beautiful piece. The highest point of the service, and just perfectly suited to such a bright day of beauty. St George's Chapel Choir are always magnificent, it's a pity they don't record more often.

Spirit is feminine in both Aramaic and Hebrew - the two languages spoken by Christ - and all the talents of the HS - comforter, teacher, guide et al are feminine, though of course gender is meaningless for a pure Spirit. Better though that the Trinity should be heterosexual rather than seen as ‘gay’ by aggressive atheists!

I too sang this in a choir. It was the first time I heard it. I just listened to about 6 versions on YT and I was moved to tears by the 6th one. I know of nothing else quite like it. Tallis might have revered it as his greatest work. The word painting, the exquisite polyphony are breathlessly exquisite. This version is about the best tempo for my money - about 2 minutes long.

Genius to have this follow Handel's "Eternal Source" as the first two pieces in the wedding - before moving to more contemporary anthems and choral pieces later in the day. If the procession up the aisle did not open your tear ducts, then the first few bars of Tallis' perfect anthem surely must have. Worth finding The Sixteen and The Tallis Scholars versions of this we well - and then carry on unearthing more gold from Tallis and others of similar genre. Mundy, Byrd and Palestrina... etc
