- Today we are removing a VR6 cylinder head. This is no small job, but is not a hard DIY to do. Be sure to follow your repair manual! I will give you some of my tips for removing a VR6 cylinder head.

Very professional, great camera angles with no shaky cam, really good explanation as you go along.....you really have got the format nailed. For this sort of work a long video is necessary and for people doing similar jobs i am sure they will appreciate the attention to detail with step by step explanation.

For those of you looking to tackle something like this, go to your local dollar store and buy a bunch of those cheap plastic food containers. Label them with what is in there and seal them up. You can usually get them in packs of 4 or 5 for a dollar.
hit up a craft store and see if you can find a rack for holding scrapbook paper. The bins are usually 12x12x6 or so and you can label them, then put the little plastic containers in there and you can keep everything together, as well as any notes you have you can slide in there with them and keep the grease and oil from the parts off them.
Also freezer bags in different sizes.

my trick to staying organized: sandwich sized ziplock bags & sharpie. label each bag. i also take a lot of photo's before i remove something.

This video is FANTASTIC.... i have a 1996 vr6 mk3 with the AAA engine... i have owned it since 1998 (so 18 years now), i took it off the road 4 years ago, drained the water but left everything else like it was. i was going to take it apart and rebuild (was no problem with the engine before but i want to turbo charge it BUT ENDED UP BUYING A HOUSE SO THAT COMES FIRST) so basically everything is going to be new. I have been watching videos on youtube for YEARS and NEVER come across your work, i will make sure i follow your videos from now on. I was always funny when taking my car to garages if they haven't worked on or at least have 1 VW nut there. i don't want just anyone to work on it... stupid i know, but i feel if they have a VW nut he will know how i feel about my car lol

Differences to the ABV (2.9) as far as I remember: differnt cams, different air intake. Maybe even different throttle, but I'm not quite sure. Here's one tip from my experiences: the camshaft tool (the one that goes into those Slots in the end of the cams) does not really fit the correct position! Better check correct Position of cyl.#1! Also: the VR6 has a very Special order in which head bolts have to be tightened. Loosenig These, I always followed this order from back to forth (hope that's said correctly). Taking off the cylinder head: watch out form them guiding sleeves: they might scratch your cyl. head pretty nasty.Oh and plse don't get me wrong, I'm just trying to help avoiding unneccessary damages. I had some and they did cost me money.

Yeah I actually went with the autotech 262s hear they're the best drop in cams if we want to keep the springs, I did get lighter mk4 lifters with it too for a good deal. Thanks heaps man I'll be watching this build
as of right now I am on thanksgiving break. but Im going to a technical school to be a mechanic. they don't offer this much traning so its nice that I can watch you do it to atleast have some insight. I want to learn everything about cars that I can. so thanks for the video ill probably end up using it in my future on some project cars

I think this is good and important; to have more detailed tech videos! If you are worried about differentiating short/long videos; call these videos "Humble Mechanic: In Depth Tech" or something like that, to separate them from your normal short ones and normal "Q&A" videos. The demand is there for this in depth stuff; you can just "signal" that this is the more hard core "techie" videos! While I appreciate your normal format and type of videos; the tech part of me, wants more in depth info and "process" type of content. We all appreciate your channel; keep up the good work! :)
PS: I am looking forward; to the head machining video and seeing, what the process is and what work in involved. :)

I’m looking at a 2001 Jetta vr6. Any thoughts on what I should look for? Do you have any videos regarding that?
Great video. I just rebuilt my 1.8 EX head out of an A1 scirocco. Had the head machined, pressure tested, new seats cut and guides fitted. i put in new seals and lifters. Noticed one of the lifters binding slightly and two of the caps could have gone in ether position, so 50/ 50 chance as the head was torn apart when I bought it. Can you see an issue with this in the future?

I myself am planning to take the head off of my Honda Accord Coupe (CG4). It has H22A engine in, if that matters. The reason I`m doing it is that the engine is burning oil. Engine happened to overheat (lost the coolant and was in the middle of road construction). I`m hoping I can fix it by taking the head to shop to check if it`s twisted. And changing gaskets.
What could cause engine burning oil and what should I check or change besides taking head to shop and new gaskets ?

I just took on a knocking VR6 as my new project and it was hard to find a good reference.
One question - we bought the wrong manual (it was for 4cylinder engines only) and for this one we are wondering exactly how to find TDC before we remove the cam..we think one of the lifter is bad, causing it to tick/knock sound(our hopeful guess #1).. any tips?

Lucky 4 cylinder guys. Great video tons of professional tips for the masses. I work with guys that have a box on their tool cart they from every nut and bolt into; but I work like you, it all goes back in the part or on organised trays, or in to cardboard laid out. That somehow works for them and this somehow works for me. Some people are comfortable in chaos, personally I don't even like to look at a pile of bolts and nuts it makes me light headed haha. +1 for AllData though, its been a irreplaceable resource and data mine for me over the years. Not the best thing in the world for VW/Audi, Volvo, and older BMW wiring schems but I don't work on that stuff nearly as much. The video was really well put together though you obviously have a talent for your work and teaching others about it. Couple of times I drifted into the video the same way I do watching horsepower or extreme 4x4 so keep them rolling. P.S. I'll never get used to looking at VW coolant jugs, weird they are.
At the dealership I can work out of a box on most jobs because its the same stuff over and over again. on this one job i pulled the tranny at of a fwd platform and it sat for 2 months then i just went to put it back together and being the first time i did that car I was a little stumped at first but you just lay everything out and put like bolts with like bolts

Thank you for this great video very clear and detailed. I'm almost done with a job on my corrado vr6. Ran great before I pulled the engine out to replace all gaskets and seals except head gasket. Had oil leaks from valve cover gasket oil cooler seals etc on a 148k engine. Replaced clutch although still some life left, and replaced timing guides chains and tensioner. However it was a very slow process took me 4 months because of lack of time. It's back in the car and when I start it I have ticking in the head, could it be that the lifter lost pressure and needs time running to pressurize?
SoyTuPapi Yes. The Manuel says 20mins over 2k. Schimmel makes a manual chain adjuster if your hyd unit has failed.

I'm the kind of guy who'd have stripped the covers off, jacked the car up and pressure washed the engine bay completely clean. makes everything soooo much easier.

Hey Charles,quick question.I purchased a VR6 12v head with the works.I’m looking at the bottom of the head were the valves are facing and on the surface their is a noticeable corrosive mark.when I run my fingers along the surface their is a slight indentation.would this effect the engines performance or cause oil and coolant to mix together.I purchased this head from a reputable builder and I know he had to have seen this when he shipped it out.just looking for some feed back.thanks!
My VR6 has a metal plate opposite the cams that is preventing me from taking the cams out. Do you have a video showing how you got to this point in this video? Thanks!

hello i'm interested in buying a VR6 motor for my Polo i have no intention of boosting it as i like NA motors but love the sound of a VR6 would like to know if there is a 2.8l 24 valve variant in this motor and if it is better than the 12v or what the proc/cons would be between the two,
did you have to remove the trans to get the head off? or can you remove the head without removing the trans and entire chain cover? hoping to just remove upper cover and Cam sprockets and upper tensioner
+THAT NEON DUDE JAMEZ I left the trans in for removal. But took it off because I wanted to replace the lower chain too.
HumbleMechanic if your just doing head gasket if you just replaced the chains and guides that works? my friend and I just replaced the lower chain and guides and upper chain and guides and now head gasket is blown and he also has 3 bent valves on 2,4,6 due to a failed rail guide didn't think he bent valves so after all done went to start and nothing and found low to no compression on 2,4,6 so I can remove the head without removing the trans and wonder how hard it would be to time if set to tdc

HI I have question about my cylinder head. Hy vr6 overheated, it got very hot. I think the thermostat was not opening. Do I need to get the head tested for hardness at what point is the head serviceable? what measurement numbers for the hardness test will be pass or fail?. Really hopping the head can be fixed there are not meny of these vr6 engines in New Zealand its hard to come by parts. any info on the matter will be much appreciated.
I use fishing tackle boxes, the clear ones, they let me see the bolts/label each individual section.. Works great for staying organized parting out cars :)

Watch your guide height if putting in performance cams. You will crush the seal (and smoke) anything over a 264 cam. Schimmel has them and a few others .450 lift with a 268.

I have a question; What causes that buildup on the valves and can it be prevented or can it be cleaned without dissasembly? I know it's a carbon buildup from combustion but does it have to be there?
Kevin Parker Alot of the time there will be degredation of the exhaust valve itself. They are sodium filled to reduce detonation. A good Fererra modern valve is cheaper than o.e. and are available in sodium filled ( I'm not Shure for the VR) Stock sodium filled have broken under high boost conditions.
Do cams need to be removed before removing cylinder head?
I have heard that the MKIII head gasket is thicker than the MKIV head gasket. As a result, the compression ratio goes up when you install an MKIV head gasket on a MKIII.
Good video, just looking at the head bolts gives me anxiety. if they round out im sure its a nightmare to get something with that much torque out, cleaning them out and getting full bite is very important lol
If you rate the AllData instructions as "OK", what would you say is a good resource of instructions for us to do this outside of the shop? I have the Bently book for my ALH Beetle, but it is really just exploded diagrams and only good for proper torque specs.

the heat shield bolts reminded me of something I heard of a few moths ago but haven't gotten to try yet: Supposedly, a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF is better than most commercialized penetrating oils.

Why pull the cams to remove the head on the 12v? Just release tensioner and remove cam sprocket, and undo head bolts. I didn't quite catch why you removed the cams first?
very thorough. I'm not afraid to grab a wrench in fact I love doing it when I have to. but I'm no mechanic. yet watching you explain this makes me feel like I could fully disassemble my VR6
I'm noticing the reddish coloration deposit in the cam chambers... . Is that a varnish by any chance? I saw this kind of coloration on the cylinder head of my 2.5L four cyl. in my '91 Pontiac and assumed it to be varnish. I changed oil brands and did not notice it getting worse - car had around 200k miles on it at the time.

it would be super helpful to me to learn a trick on how to take valves out the easy way without a compressor tool?
Would it been a lot easier to do this job if the motor is out? Especially if rebuilding/refreshing everything that needs to be replaced.
+Michael Evia I thought about that. But I needed a way to hold everything in place while taking off the head. So I just left it in the car.
ya with the back i am computer tech and thought out my back lifting server and ups systems about 20lb to 100lb. Itend to know my limits now and get help for the heavy stuff
i was wondering wants veiw on the 95 eurovan i am wainting on a flooded one i know the guy didnt start it because he called i now i can get computers on ebay i have a place to recondection the com and wires also if i have to buy another one for parts will the v6 fit the one i am looking as 2,8 litter the guy has lots if receips the poor guy lost two
