- Saturday March 13, 2010 the great PIXAR and Disney story artist would have been 50 years old. Joe was one of the prime creative people behind PIXAR and a major contributor to Toy Story, a Bug's Life, Cars. Joe was tragically killed in an automobile accident 5 years ago. This is a visualization of anecdotes I heard about my friend and colleague Joe.

He will be missed along with the good spirited, Glenn McQueen (1960-2002), Roddy McDowell (1928-1998), Madeline Kahn (1942-1999), Jonathan Harris (1914-2002), Frank Thomas (1912-2004), Ollie Johnston (1912-2008), Justin Wright (1981-2008), Japeth Pieper (1965-2010), Andy Witkin (1952-2010), Steve Jobs (1955-2011) and Phyllis Diller (1917-2012).
I agree the drawings of him hugging his family and children are so powerful, they bring tears to my eyes.
My heart shattered when he Joe was running with his family
As a voice actor who grew up with his character, his influence upon me is profound. As a writer, his contributions to Pixar and Disney movies had an even GREATER effect upon me. Joe Ranft... you may be gone, but you shall never, ever be forgotten.
It was six years ago that Joe Ranft died in a tragic car accident. Not only was Joe a globably significant creative talent whose characters made humans a better, kinder, gentler, funnier species of critter, but he was also an amazing neighbor who knew and loved everybody. Is there any better kind of man on earth? To know Joe was to love Joe!
What a beautiful and fitting tribute. Joe was the greatest teacher I ever had (and I had some great ones). I wouldn't have had a career without him. I had a couple setbacks, and I would have packed up and gone home in defeat if he hadn't seen something in me. I keep a little plastic cereal prize of the caterpillar in my office and remember him every day, and I'm so grateful to have known him and been inspired by him.
Wait you knew Joe Ranft?!
Joe was a great teacher at CalArts and loved by everybody. He put me up for a number of jobs over the years (got me my very first one) and I honestly don't know if I go a day without thinking of him. When it came to story, Joe was the A List, and when it came to human beings, same thing.
+Surfer Joe I'm gonna take that as a yes :P
It's a yes. Didn't mean to turn this into a huge name-drop, just wanted to pay tribute to my teacher and friend. On my first job as a lowly animation intern I used to hang out with Joe after hours in the office he shared with Burny Mattinson during "Rescuers Down Under". Great time in my life. Over the years we stayed in touch here and there and he was always putting me up for jobs- (almost always way outside of L.A. ). I went to lunch with him at Pixar shortly before I left the business and that's the last time I saw him. But his influence on animation and film storytelling will live on.
+Surfer Joe must have been hard when he died
I'll always remember him as the repair man from The Brave Little Toaster. It's a perfect example of a part played exceptionally well, and shows how Joe was willing to play any role he set his mind to.
It will be five years this Monday... we lost this giant of a man... and I still miss him. I play this tribute often and admire how much of a professional and human being he will be in the hearts of story tellers and creators all over the world. The medium used here is the catharsis of how we are able to shape the world near and close to us as we see it. Please remember that every day we create the storyboards of our lives and we do this by loving design.
It is a song written by Bob Dylan performed by Madeleine Peyroux called "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome". It is on her album "Careless Love." If you like this song I recommend you check out the album.
Heck yeah I noticed it instantly from the first note.
This is beautiful, congratuations! Joe Ranft will live forever on all the Pixar films he contributed.
That was beautiful. Thank you. My daughter definitely made me lonesome. I miss her every day, all the time, and I always will.
This is such an incredible tribute. Thank you for sharing your work with us all.
My daddy knew him in high school and he said that he was a great man.
I love how you did this. It made me cry a little bit.
Very cool video. Like the "story board" theme. Fitting as Joe himself was a storyboard actor as well as voice actor and animator and great guy and funny.....you get the idea. Long Live Pixar!!! the Legendary animation studio Joe helped to create. Again Awesome tribute 5 stars.
What a beautiful & lovely tribute to Joe.
I've just bawled my eyes out at the end of that - it really touched me and my son, who is 6. Oh my God... Such a terrible, terrible loss. RIP Joe.
Can't believe its been six years. This captures the Joe I knew... Watching it, made me feel like he was here again. Then it made me cry -- again. Still sooo sad he's gone. We're all better people for having him touch our lives. Thanks for letting us know you, Joe...
Wish that more people would give him more love and support.
John, thanks for making such a wonderful tribute. It brings tear to my eyes.....
Happy Birthday Joe.
~Anthony
This is so wholesome! And in some form, he's still here. Watching Pixar progress and blossom. Miss you Joe 💙🥺
Not much to add that hasn't been said already, but I just want to say every time I start watching this video thinking I'll just skim parts of it, I end up watching it all the way through. Great tribute.
Joe, though you are gone, your work will always continue to change my life. Not only did he work with Pixar, which I love so much, but he also worked on The Brave Little Toaster- probably the best movie I've ever watched and one that I hold near and dear to my heart. Thank you so much.
His Brother Jerome Ranft is still alive
Ye- 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Joe has always been a hero of mine. I never can stop myself from crying after watching this. This is the best way to show how great he was.
This is the tribute John Musker put together for Joe Ranft. It was played at the celebration of Joe's life, held at Pixar about a month after Joe's all-too-sudden and tragic death at age 45.
RIP Joe Ranft
1960-2005
Absolutely wonderful! I love how you gave him the butterfly wings at the end!
so sad he played most of my favorite side characters in the pixar movies
R. I. P Joe Ranft (1960-2005) for a Pixar animator and voiced Lenny from Toy Story (1995), Heimlich from A Bug's Life (1998 and Wheezy from Toy Story 2 (1999).
that's simply magnificent, utter tragic shame. I hear the some new voice recording technology that can record and mimic your voice, once recorded in any dialogue. They should do that for Joe Ranft so his voice can heard and legacy lives on in Pixar films.
Thanks John, this is a truly touching tribute. He touched so many lives but none more than his family and friends.
all of the drawings used in John Musker's tender and touching tribute are featured in John Canemaker's new MUST-HAVE book for any fan of Joe Ranft and/or Joe Grant.
Wonderful stories and the ice cream parlor stunt hillariously involved more than just spewing strawberry sundae topping. Joe, then a teenager, flopped on the ground and "went into convulsions" as dozens of patrons fled in horror.
Sorry, I think that's funnier than the Jet Blue guy and his take two beers and jump.
1:45 It’s always amazing to see John Lasseter and Joe Ranft together. They’re storyteller brothers from different mothers.
Happy Birthday Joe. We do miss you very much. And also, I haven't forgotten Wheezy. So Thanks man.
May Joe Ranft rest in peace.
Hey Bro,
Saw your storyboarded tribute to Joe and cried, cried, cried, so beautiful! Sorry for the loss of your dear, dear, friend. Your tribute seems to have touched thousands of people. What a great way to keep your friend's memory alive! Love,Coco
Happy Birthday, Joe!!
Hello, my professor (Mike Genz) just showed me the animatic you made for Joe Ranft. I found it captivating and wanted to reach out to tell you this. I also noticed the Madeleine Peyroux song instantly!!!
He's going to turn 57 this year
A story reel was a very fitting approach John. ;)
Thanks for the inspiration!
r.i.p. joseph henry "joe" ranft (13.03.1960 - 16.08.2005) :( what a great guy!
For your information, John Musker is the co-director of "The Little Mermaid", "Alladin" and other Disney classics.
Gosh, I wish Mr. Ranft was here. I didn't know him before the cars movie because when he died was around 3 years old.
Nexus5150 his Brother Jerome Ranft will took over his Characters to do the voice of pixar film.
He died when I was never born
The first thing I'm gonna do when I get to Pixar is ask if I can take his place voicing his characters since I'm really good at doing all his characters. I just hope Joe's ghost would be proud of me for helping out someday.
I wouldn't ask that dude, that's like saying that the guy is replaceable.
321SPONGEBOLT I'm pretty sure Joe's brother Jerome already currently voices Joe's Pixar characters.
Love the rough animated style!
I can't believe he died on my birthday.
In a fortnight,it would be 9 years
RIP Ranft
A wonderful tribute... thank you for sharing it with us.

I have been visiting this film on a weekly basis for the past few months. Such a beautiful emotional tribute to an amazing man. There a few better ways to show such an appreciation. Perfect. Thank you. If only we could all be honoured with such an animation of our life in such a beautiful light

Wonderful tribute to a wonderful man.
So appropriate to do the whole film in story sketch. Perfect.
oh god tears everywhere.
The meaning of that drawing only 'reads' for those who knew Joe. He did not work on Rock a Doodle. He did find it unintentionally funny, though.
This is a touching tribute!
Omigawd those two drawings of him hugging his family are frickin amazing! So strong and so much emotion in a simple drawing. Seriously! And having them towards the end and he sudden realization that this dude is dead even tho I just recently read up about him....well i almost got teary eyed.
Joe maybe gone but his world will keep on spinning
Such a beautiful tribute
