    Durring arguably one of the most unnerving scenes of the film, when the mother tries getting into the attic once she is possessed by Paiman she tries to get inside by smacking her head repeatedly into the door. With this new context, I believe her movements are meant to resemble a bird attempting to peck it's way through something in order to get their prey

      I hesitate to speak on their behalf, but I think what they are alluding to is the difference between "being able to do something" and "having the will to execute the actions needed to do XYZ in the first place"
      An old example I used to use with my gamer friends was: "Yeah, I completed Super Ghouls & Ghosts, and I probably could again, but I just don't have the strength of will to go through that again"
      That's the vibe I get, after enjoying Novum's work.

      @thorCast Před rokem +8

      Absolutely. There's alot of quality CZcamsrs(I hate to even use that word when talking about videos of this quality) and Novum is absolutely among them. The fact his channel is this small is criminal. Fortunately his video popped up on my algorithm and my gfs algorithm so let's hope that's a sign of things to come. There's nobody who even comes close to his breakdowns of films and media. It's like he's inside the heads of the creators. Sometimes I feel like he understands them better than they do. His hereditary video was above and beyond but his alien breakdown was top notch. So much so I immediately went and watched the green knight and the lighthouse so I could watch those videos next.

      Thank you so much guys this was so awesome to read, not quite sure how I missed it first time round tbh! Really weird/awesome to see people talking so positively about stuff I've done so thank you. Just to clear up the confusion I am 1000% making more videos just like the Hereditary one, and I'll continue to push the boat out in any way I can, hopefully improving production quality as I go. The reason for me making that comment is more that I'm dealing with a medium in which skill and effort don't necessarily equate to success. Up until a few weeks ago Hereditary, Alien, PYW videos were all lower than 4k views and it was only because of a lucky bump in the algorithm that you guys saw any of this, really. I'm going to keep doing it, there's zero chance I stop, and I hope that having more subscribers now will allow for some quicker growth, but I can't mentally rely on it without inviting in intense disappointment!

    I think the greatest thing in the world is if Ari Aster did a film like Hereditary for each of the kings of Hell, and how they would approach victimizing the living. Bael, Vine, Beleth, Balam, etc. They all have such colorful lore and histories but it's all couched in that medieval grimoire existence. Paimon stands as the one that got a modern send-up. Make this the first film in a series and I'd be over the moon lol. But not nonsense demons in exorcism movies, either. Thoughtful, adult horror movies that don't waste the characters on easy gags. But the Lesser Key of Solomon has so much cool shit in it that doesn't get enough love in modern horror.

      More like it doesn't get *_any_* love in modern horror LOL
      I think it's too "niche", for lack of a better term;
      Most horror writers, modern or otherwise, might be familiar with _elements_ from the goetia while not actually knowing what it is as a whole (i.e: a surface level familiarity with individual/more well-known demons, symbolism, sigils, etc.)
      That's a really cool concept, though.
      I think it would register even better in a series of graphic novels, with each daemon having it's own book/"chapter", perhaps each being illustrated and/or written by different horror writers/illustrators!
      Ooh! Imagine if Junji Ito did one!

    I'm convinced Ari Aster studied occultism under Franz Bardon's system and took inspiration from it. I thought about this when i first saw the scene where Peter mentions "the air flexing" during the evocation of Paimon/Charlie, and then i became more convinced through all the bird analogies. Franz Bardon kind of specialized in evocation, in fact i think he has the best evocation work out there, "practice of magical evocation". In Bardon's biography, one of his students mentions how when Bardon would evoke a spirit the room would be filled with the sound of flapping wings everywhere, in occultism this phenomenon is attributed to the ether in the air literally "flexing", expanding and contracting to accommodate the spirit's "body" stepping in from a different sphere, and thus causing a sound similar to birds flapping their wings.

    Good video, it makes sense because in operations of demonic evocation, you do everything in your power, so that the demon manifests itself in a more "human-like" appearance; if it were to make itself present, in its true form, it could be too much for the human psyche, and you would basically go insane or die from a heart attack. That's why grimoires contain such a kaleidoscope of images, because there is more than one way of summoning the entity, when it comes to appearances.
    Edit: I see some people in the comments getting a bit confused. This video is about the fictional demon in the film, not the "historically accurate" one, that was used as a base; Ari took some liberties to better express the story he wanted to tell.

    Also, I don't know that it's really worth mentioning but whippoorwills are known for swallowing insects whole; they leave their mouths open as traps and then just swallow any bugs that fly in. I can't remember if you mentioned it in your previous video but I think it's interesting considering the way Charlie dies and all the "throat getting smaller" stuff. Paimon is represented by the whippoorwill, whippoorwills swallow things whole, and Charlie dies because of something she ate (she didn't *technically* choke but it's similar). Paimon cramming his way up/down his hosts' throats is reminiscent of that to me. Whippoorwills are also nocturnal and Charlie's death and the big finish both happen at night when whippoorwills do their foraging. I don't know, I just think it's a neat detail.

    I watched your full Hereditary breakdown yesterday and just wanted to thank you. I watched the film because of how much I loved Midsommar and felt eager to experience more Ari Aster. You highlighted so well just HOW much effort went into making it, by putting in so much effort of your own. I appreciate the film more deeply than initial watching, so thank you thank you for your time and your voice. I can't wait to see your Midsommar video ❤

    Late to the party, but i’m a huge nerd on both the topics of egregious media analysis and ornithology, so i’ve come back to the original analysis video a few times in the past few months and there’s something on the topic of Hereditary’s birds i haven’t seen anyone mention, that being the whippoorwill. you said the whippoorwill symbolizes death, and while that’s true, it more specifically symbolizes what happens to the soul after death. folklore originating from colonial New England (and imo possibly passed on to the settlers from Indigenous Americans in the same area, given very similar legends in their own folklore) depicts whippoorwills as soul snatchers! they were said to linger outside the windows of the dying and wait to catch and swallow souls as they left their bodies (if this sounds familiar, H.P. Lovecraft used this legend in The Dunwich Horror after hearing about it from a Bay Stater friend, which is what google tells me people from massachusetts call themselves). so given the whippoorwill’s placement in the treehouse at the climax of the movie, i think it’s safe to say the cult is using it to assist in luring/leading Paimon, and simultaneously furthering the assertion that the bird itself represents him with their shared identities as soul snatchers. also, and as a personal headcanon- because they’re famous for how utterly demonic looking they are i like to imagine Paimon’s true form as a potoo, the whippoorwill’s very handsome South American cousin. war devil style if you will.
    as for why they’d use another type of bird in the actual movie, my guess is simply that eastern whippoorwills (their full name) are elusive and, in fact, eastern, and they were filming in Utah. so it might not have been possible for production to get their hands on one.

      Whipporwills are also very common birds being psychopomps (is this the right word? In Italian, my language, is "psicopompo", birds that carry away the soul of a dead) in the HP Lovecraft stories.

I have a bad habit of rewatching my favorite movies instead of sitting down for something new, but I remember watching this one in the break room and getting to the telephone pole scene.
